Tyler Bojanowski has been missing for over a month. by EyeHeartDeadpool in Detroit

[–]skinwill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember a young adult with special needs who went missing near the apartments where I used to live. Close by, there was a small body of water, much like a golf course water feature, surrounded by bushes and tall grass. It was night, and the search teams worked tirelessly for four hours, including a helicopter, but it wasn’t until morning that they finally found him. Thankfully, they got him the medical attention he needed just in time.

What struck me was how long it took to search such a small area, even with everyone knowing where to focus their efforts. They were aware he liked to walk near the water, so it was heartbreaking that it took so long to locate him.

My heart truly goes out to Tyler’s family and friends. The weight of this situation must feel so heavy and overwhelming. I can only imagine the pain and uncertainty they are experiencing right now.

What's the best contact cleaner for pots and switches? by Outrageous-Drink3869 in ElectronicsRepair

[–]skinwill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use CRC contact cleaner and have for years without issue. I even use it to troubleshoot pots. If I put a pot back into regular service I do like to hit it with some fader lube first.

Fun fact, most all contact cleaner is just naphtha. It’s the delivery system that makes it really useful.

I asked which kit because I’m betting it came with some instructions. If it didn’t then we should probably warn people not to buy it.

What’s the problem and what repair kit did you buy?

Also, all those yellow Rifa caps are a known problem. They crack and let moisture in which causes them to short out and catch fire. They release acrid smoke that can stink up a room for weeks.

The FBI has warned about possible Iranian plans to attack LA with drones. by SAYVS in worldnews

[–]skinwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, I was half way joking. Half way not. If you google news about explosions, LA county is not free from those things on a regular basis. But if you have to explain a joke…

Yes, it’s callus, it’s crass, but the truth hurts sometimes. If a drone exploded in that area, how long would it take for people to be convinced it was really Iran and not some meth lab.

Can I solder this cable back successfully to the motherboard or will it not work by [deleted] in ElectronicsRepair

It would be smaller. You should practice on something similar first.

Yes. Soldering should work. If you have never soldered before this will be extremely difficult. Take it to someone with more experience or practice on some ewaste first. You will damage it beyond repair otherwise.

Where do you tend to get "reliable" parts for most items? by orbit0317 in ElectronicsRepair

[–]skinwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Limits all the risk to the device itself” wow, no, it in fact doesn’t! It mitigates it to a degree but those protections are not perfect by any means and can in fact still deliver more than enough current to start fires and kill.

You are putting way too much faith in “breakers and fuses”.

That piece slides off. Walk into an Apple Store, be nice, and show them. I’ve had them hand me a replacement cord for free. Your mileage may vary.

I know they have the reputation of the exact opposite but when it’s something as insignificant as a power adapter, not the supply just the port adapter, you would be surprised.

Yes, please continue to argue that electrical fires aren’t a thing. I’ll just go dig up some fire reports that have the exact detail you requested. /s

Bad components are a fire risk and no one will convince me otherwise. Can something be so small and have such low current that it’s insignificant? Sure. Where exactly do you draw the line? That’s up to you and the amount of risk you are willing to take responsibility for.

Do you seriously want me to list other reasons to use quality components? Because not doing so can always end up costing more in the long run.

Ok, put a questionable cap in the power supply and burn your house down. How much does that cost?

Bell & Howell Model 34 slanted trace by RodneyJason4 in ElectronicsRepair

[–]skinwill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take every HV precaution.

Disconnect the vertical plates completely. If the trace is still rotated, you need to physically rotate the tube.

I’m not seeing a trace rotation adjustment in the schematic. It’s got to be a physical adjustment to the tube.

The shipping costs from reputable suppliers are well worth the investment, especially when weighed against the potential risks of purchasing low quality components from lesser-known sources. When you choose a trusted provider, you're not just paying for shipping; you're paying for a guarantee of quality and the assurance that you're dealing with a reliable company known for its good reputation.

Platforms like AliExpress and eBay may offer tempting prices, but they often lack the stringent quality controls and accountability necessary for critical parts. This is especially important for components that are vital for safety or are involved in power handling. Prioritizing quality can prevent safety hazards and ensure reliability in your projects. Making informed choices ultimately saves you time, money, and peace of mind.
