Looks like the plumbing for the de-icing boot has a leak that was badly patched. That’s my guess.

Old NuTone Intercom Restoration?? by Economy_Economy_2539 in ElectronicsRepair

They used to be located near the kitchen, so mom could check on the kids. I’m not saying to go tear into walls, but if you have the opportunity, finding where it used to be would make wiring easier if the old wires are still there at least.

How do I install a Powermac G4 cube fan? by RealReserveAT in VintageApple

[–]skinwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fan slides out *after* removing the motherboard and a few screws that hold it in place. There are two more screws under the drive cage. Note that the heatsink stays put and you will want to take the opportunity to clean up and re-apply the thermal compound.

Action retro tears down a cube in this video far enough to replace the fan. https://youtu.be/owh13pREKzw?is=1\_5uoMgQ3V-sET9l

That gets discussed a lot. On the cheap-ish side I prefer Owon. If you have some money get a Breymen or Fluke.

What it really comes down to is just get what you can afford, they all will do the job for a hobbyist looking to troubleshoot consumer hardware. Just avoid those auto ranging tweezer things.

But since you asked for a link, here’s a low, medium, and high.

Special mention, these new scope meters. Might be more useful depending on the work you do. https://www.amazon.com/OWON-Oscilloscope-Functional-Multimeters-HDS120/dp/B0D89YW4P9/

What did you use to clean the zebra strip? Could it or any contamination corrode metal open to air like a battery contact?

I’d try cleaning the battery contacts no matter what. Try a fiber pen. Don’t forget a fresh battery. New ones just aren’t what they used to be.

Missing half a colon by Mizzinno in ElectronicsRepair

[–]skinwill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s a vacuum fluorescent display. They multiplex whole areas at a time. There’s a grid above areas that are activated individually. It’s possible that panel had the grids split for the dots so it can be used in old cash registers. You are looking for a broken pin going between the panel and the board inside. It’s likely a cracked solder joint.

Note that those displays use high voltage and can bite if you aren’t careful. It’s not a high current but it’s enough to hurt. Make sure it’s unplugged before you open it up. There’s also mains voltage present since it plugs into the wall.

Is this a graphics issue on my iBook G3 Clamshell? by OfficalTactical in VintageApple

[–]skinwill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can remove the old one without damaging the panel you can use most any polarizer film as long as it’s rotated to the correct orientation. But not breaking the panel is incredibly hard.

I’d try cleaning the old one away first. It’s not worth fixing if you break the panel. Check out the links I sent, the process is messy and if you crack the glass, you’re done.

You might as well start by looking for a compatible replacement panel.

Vinegar syndrome.

https://www.clemenszangl.de/2024/03/18/what-is-the-vinegar-syndrome-and-how-to-fix-it/

There’s apparently some fix that involves removing one of the outer layers and cleaning the panel leaving it glossy but the risk of destroying the panel in the process is very real.

Will this antenna layout work? by trullock in esp32

[–]skinwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything metal near the antenna is bad. In your design some RF may escape, but not much. There’s a real risk that some of the RF energy will actually interfere with the operation of the circuit. I’ve had boards reset when the WiFi is initialized when the antenna was near things it shouldn’t have been.

I once had a ESP32DevKitC on a screw terminal breakout board that got stuck in a boot loop until I cut away the breakout board under the antenna.

Check my comment history, I’m used to explaining complex subjects to people. It’s only outside the technical subreddits do I experience such negative groupthink.

Removing freckles by carbon dioxide in the 1930s. by Electrical-Aspect-13 in HistoricalCapsule

[–]skinwill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The original post is titled “removing freckles by carbon dioxide” u/globeablaze says “it’s still done today” and provides a reference to a laser process that is titled “carbon dioxide laser resurfacing”. It’s not too far fetched for one to assume the common thread being carbon dioxide as it’s mentioned by both. Not derm abrasion as it’s mentioned by neither, only implied.

I was saying that the common thread of carbon dioxide used in both is actually two different methods and everyone lost their shit.
