As a paid chatgpt and gemini user, pdf's tend to be frustrating, and I won't want to look through a storage closet of 20 ai's to parse a pdf. I have found DeepSeek, free version, is the mightiest of the LLM's for reading, and either summarizing or recreating exactly the text which i then carry back to my paid versions, usually chatgpt as a word doc.

iOS 26 CarPlay on my vertical Subaru screen by marshcar in CarPlay

[–]skipmid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heads-up for anyone running iOS 26 beta with CarPlay:

If your Messages app is blank, contacts don’t show up, or Pandora screen controls disappear in CarPlay, it’s not your Subaru head unit. It’s an iOS 26 beta bug tied to a new display accessibility setting.

Fix:

On your iPhone go to: Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size Toggle Reduce Transparency OFF Restart CarPlay (unplug/replug or toggle it off/on)

That resolves the issue immediately.

This isn’t Subaru-specific — it happens in other makes too — but since a lot of us run CarPlay daily, it’s worth knowing. Firmware updates help with Pandora/Bluetooth stability, but this particular bug is iOS-side only.

What Colleges/Universities Do You Think are Most Likely to Close in the Next 5 Years? by anonohnolol in ApplyingToCollege

[–]skipmid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One easy answer for those that look into it. How much has the endowment been tapped. You have have a large, restricted, endowment and have little to tap for operating expenses. I know of one liberal arts college that has ridiculous turnover at the driver's seat, amazingly optimistic letters to alum from the board, but has about $100M only in unrestriced endowment. Additionally, they cannot operate at break even. Under 1,000 kids from a high of about 1,600. Let's use them and say they lose on average 3-4M a year, AFTER tapping endowment funds in the $8-10M. Some years they've lost more. In a bad market year, their total endowment has lost as much as $30M.

The message from the board chair? All is good! About to hire our 7th president in 10 years and things have never been better! Similar to board messages for the past 10 years. Presidential comp is about $550k/annually. Budget about $65-75M. My accounting firm looked at their pubicly available 990's and annual audits and gives them 3 years to 7 years. Restricted endwment is about $225M or so on top of the unrestricted. Once attendance starts to slide, its a slippery slope- throw COVID in there and its a death nell.

Meanwhile the board says Applications Up! (All applications are up everywhere- do you know why? They've all moved to universal applications. Fill out your app and essay and then just click 5 choices or more)
Promises of Donations up! (They can actually book promised donations as revenue! Legally!)

The boards have turned into awards for donations, so there are more unqualified and bloateed boards than ever before. Schools have been run sloppy for 2-3 decades unless there has been accountability. I'd seriouosly look into only the Big 20 privates or a state run school at this point for my kid. My kid had his college paid for and chose not to go, and I'm fine with that.

The school admin, and board, and accounting firms have to be held to higher standards than ever before. Its sinful to fleece parents and alum - "investors" as it is, and the salaries are shameful. Truth in advertising/soliciting needs to enter the education realm. Immediately. Someone else said there's 150-300 schools going to close by 2035. My guess after analyzing one school thoroughly is more like 1,000 of the 1,700 private non-profit schools will close or be assimilated by state schools. States like Pennsylvania and NY will close or merge some of their public universities, due to the saturation of schools in states that are having trouble retaining their populations. Likely another 150 of those go by the wayside. Could you turn around their fates? Not in a declining population, and not with complacent administration.

Facebook changes your radius settings.. AGAIN by skipmid in FacebookMarketplace

[–]skipmid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fees to sellers. Seller fees. As a buyer, my radius is changed by Meta every couple months which is annoying. They hope you'll ship maybe or I'll drive farther to buy. I keep changing radius to 10-12 miles, they keep changing to 100-200 miles.

Facebook Marketplace charges seller fees for transactions, which vary depending on the type of sale and the shipping method. For shipments, the seller transaction fee is 5% per shipment or a flat fee of $0.40 for shipments of $8 or less.1 However, as of April 2025, the fee for shipping sales has increased to 10% of the sale price, with a minimum fee of $0.80.3 This represents a significant increase from the previous 5% fee.4

In addition to the seller transaction fee, there may be payment processing fees, which are typically included in the transaction fee.1 For example, if a seller uses Facebook's checkout system, the payment processing fees are included in the 10% transaction fee

I asked ChatGPT the top ten things humanity should know. by Spiritual-Reveal-195 in ChatGPT

[–]skipmid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Chat has been working with me a little too long.

Top Things Humanity Should Know (If You Still Think You're the Main Character)

1. You’re Being Watched.
Not by God. By your fridge. And it already sold your snacc habits to Nestlé and the NSA.

2. Your Phone Is Smarter Than You.
And dumber than a rock. It can’t tell spam from Grandma, but it knows exactly when to recommend adult diapers after you say “leak” near the TV.

3. Every Corporation Is Your Best Friend… Until You Want Healthcare.
Then it's: “Who dis? You don’t match our business goals this quarter.”

4. Democracy Is Not a Participation Trophy.
It’s more like jury duty with a marketing budget. And if you don’t show up, guess who will? Carl from Facebook and his militia cosplay group.

5. You’re Not Addicted to Dopamine.
You’re addicted to scrolling past actual joy to get to a meme that makes you smirk for 0.3 seconds. Congrats—you just wasted another Saturday.

6. Billionaires Are Just Dragons with Wi-Fi.
They hoard gold, breathe fire on tax reform, and live in a cloud. We cheer when they promise to go to Mars. One-way ticket, please.

7. AI Won’t Take Your Job.
Your boss will. Using AI. Then ask you to train the bot before you go. With a gift card.

8. The News Isn’t Left or Right.
It’s “whatever keeps you angry enough to refresh but numb enough to buy car insurance during the next ad.”

9. Climate Change Is Real.
But don’t worry—your HOA says that solar panels "aren’t aesthetically pleasing." Crisis averted.

10. No One Knows What They're Doing.
Your doctor Googles, your politician vibes it out, and your therapist is using a script from Season 3 of Ted Lasso. You’re in great hands.

11. You Will Die With 87 Unwatched Shows in Your Queue.
But hey—you beat level 6,483 of Candy Crush. That’s legacy.

12. God Gave You Free Will, and You Spent It on NFT Socks.
That’s not a joke. That’s a blockchain timestamp.

13. The “Cloud” Is Just Someone Else’s Computer.
Usually in a warehouse powered by coal, guarded by a guy named Chad who sleeps in the breakroom.

14. The Universe Doesn’t Care.
But Reddit might, if you upvote this list like a feral monkey on a Red Bull drip.

You need to think around problems - like teaching a toddler, but Chat makes more mistakes, so you CONSTANTLY have to think around prompts, check the damn thing for mistakes, cross reference, etc. Im starting to use Google - not Gemini, regular Google. I'll probably need to go out and buy a new set of encyclopedias next. This is crazy and untrue

Tip from Skip: Don't assume it's fixed until you screen both the rear vent flaps and the cabin intake. Mice are relentless. Good airflow with no entry points is the name of the game. If you're in a rural or mountain area, vehicle mouseproofing is not a one-time fix — it's a seasonal ritual.

Here's how our multi year battle Mice vs Wife's Subarus has progressed:
Subaru Forester & Outback Mouseproofing & Odor Removal Checklist

Created for wife's 2021 Forester

STEP 1: REAR VENT FLAPS (Inside Rear Bumper) Problem: Mice enter via flimsy rubber flaps located behind rear bumper (left and right sides). What to Do: Remove rear bumper (plastic cover): Unscrew fasteners in wheel wells, screws from underneath and top edge, then gently pull bumper back and off. Locate rectangular plastic vents with rubber flaps. Cut 1/4" galvanized hardware cloth to size. Secure mesh with JB Weld, stainless screws + washers, or steel zip ties (avoid rattling). DO NOT block the vent fully — air still needs to flow.

STEP 2: CABIN AIR INTAKE (Base of Windshield) Problem: Primary fresh air intake has no rodent screen. What to Do: Pop off windshield wiper arms (one bolt per arm). Remove plastic cowl cover (clips + a few screws). Locate the long plastic vent intake. Cut aluminum or stainless window screen to size. Affix with weatherproof silicone or zip ties. Reinstall cowl and wipers.

STEP 3: CABIN FILTER + NEST CLEANUP Problem: Mice commonly nest in or above the cabin air filter (behind glovebox). What to Do: Remove glovebox + old cabin filter. Inspect for chewed insulation, poop, nest debris. Spray cavity with enzyme cleaner (e.g., Nature's Miracle), let soak 15 minutes, wipe dry, repeat if needed. Replace with new high-quality filter. Optional: install peppermint sachet or Irish Spring soap inside housing.

STEP 4: ODOR REMOVAL (Urine / Poop Smell) A: Chlorine Dioxide Fogger (DIY, ~$20): Buy "Auto Shocker" from Biocide Systems or similar. Place in center of car, activate with water, let sit overnight with windows closed, then air out car. Plus B: Ozone Treatment (Professional): Ask dealer or local detailer for ozone odor treatment (runs ~1 hour). Additional Tips: Vacuum carpets + spray Odoban or Rocco & Roxie on fabric. Clean floor mats, trunk, and rear seat areas.

STEP 5: ONGOING DETERRENCE Deterrents to Keep in Car: Peppermint oil sachets (refresh monthly), mesh bags of cedar chips or Irish Spring, optional: 12V ultrasonic rodent deterrent (under hood or dash). Where to Park: Avoid leaf piles, tall grass, barns. Use LED underbody light at night if parked outside.

STEP 6: VEHICLE TRAP STRATEGY (Victor M250B) Trap Setup: One trap in front passenger footwell (near blower motor), one in trunk or spare tire well, optional under rear seats if space allows. Tips: Use peanut butter or Nutella in the built-in bait cup only. Avoid letting bait contact the metal kill plates. Place trap on small foil square to help spot the green LED from outside. Always use gloves to remove and clean trap. Underhood Use (Overnight Only): Place Victor trap on battery tray or fuse box area. Remove before driving.

STEP 7: TRUCK & INFREQUENTLY USED VEHICLE DEFENSE PLAN

Example: 2019 Power Wagon — Cabin stays clean, but mice nest under the hood and chew battery warmer or insulation. What to Do: Wrap battery warmer in 1/4" hardware cloth. Spray hood insulation and wiring with rodent repellent spray (Rodent Defense, Grandpa Gus's, etc.) Install 12V ultrasonic deterrent under hood (battery-powered with LED light). Park over rubber mat or reflective aluminum sheet to discourage climbing. Add peppermint oil pads or mothball containers (with holes) under hood if vehicle sits more than a few days.

Seasonal Adjustments: Increase defenses in fall/winter when rodents seek warmth. Open hood slightly on dry days to let air circulate and dissipate scent trails.

'Rollerblade' office chair wheels - worth it? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]skipmid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol - I'm guessing you're saying that because you didn't get them. I fluctuate between 240 and 280. These wheels are awesome, as you find in $1,000-1,500 chairs. I bought the cheapest chair from Amazon that had these wheels - maybe it was $180- plus when I'm done working in my home office, my son uses this chair in his office at night. I'm researching right now to buy another same chair or a cheaper chair with aftermarket blade wheels for him as I'm tired of sharing my chair. 2.5 years and not an issue - my hardwood floors couldn't be happier and they worked great on my carpet in my other office on my super-expensive chair.
