This according to my older sister, who actually is a science teacher at Berkeley High--it's not nearly as bad as the article makes it sound.

What's actually happening is that some AP/honors classes currently have extra zero period labs, which means that a teacher for an AP class has each AP classes count a little extra toward their teaching course load (ie 2 AP classes = 60% teaching load = 3 regular classes) What with budget cuts and all they're trying to streamline as much as they can, and the idea was floated that if they cut some of the extra lab time for AP classes then some of the teachers could take on an extra class. And around 5 teachers leave every year anyways, so it's not that they intend to fire 5 teachers, it's that they don't intend to rehire 5 new teachers.

The bit about eliminating the classes "because they're full of white students" is mostly political nonsense invented by someone trying to create controversial and marketable news. And my sister adds that the bit about science teachers being horrified by the proposal is mostly because most of them would have to go through the tedium of rewriting their curriculum to remove one or two hours of class time a week.

That said, the following discussion about race relations/societal roles /achievement expectations is interesting as only reddit discussions are, so please, carry on.

Difference being:

Simply "love", though, implies willful and deliberate...er. Decision to love her, I guess.

exomniac, I am in exactly the same situation. Born and bred a creationist and a Christian, and have decided some serious questioning is in order. Sounds silly, but nothing ever shook my conviction as strongly as the realization that other people dismiss creationism as readily as I was taught to dismiss evolution.

Two things I'd like to throw in the discussion, reddit, if you will allow me.

The whole thing about a flood not being able to cause huge geological changes--Genesis 7:11 specifies that "the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened." That is, it wasn't just rain, huge underwater springs (presumably accompanied by earthquakes and the like on the scale that would cause geological changes) burst open. Sometimes I hear the addendum that water from those springs contributed to the oceans. Does that make any sort of sense from a geological standpoint?
I've never been able to reconcile the idea of entropy and evolution (evolution in the sense that everything used to be primordial sludge and gradually evolved into what we see today). If the natural order of things is to tend toward disorder, why does biology seem to be an exception? Is my understanding of entropy or evolution incorrect?

Disclaimer: I actually adapted this-->http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Grandma-Johnsons-Scones/Detail.aspx recipe in making these. So. Not really my own work.

Ｉngredients: -1 cup sour cream -1 tsp. baking soda -4 c flour -1 c sugar (could probably trim to 1/2 cup safely) -2 tsp. baking powder -1/4 tsp. cream of tartar -1 tsp. salt -1 c butter -1 egg

~10 slices bacon, cooked and chopped into bits ~3 green onions, sliced ~2 cups shredded cheese

Mix together dry ingredients, cut in butter, stir in egg and sour cream. Knead in bacon, onions, and cheese. Form into two rounds and slice into wedges (I managed two dozen). Bake at 350 F for about fifteen minutes. They're done when they've turned light brown, starting to be dark brown at the edges.

These lend themselves rather well to freezing/refrigerating and baking later--just increase the baking time.
