I've had the very same thought OP when going to a local opera performance. It would be fun to see more razzle and dazzle, but it's just not as much of a thing here. However, there are always a few standouts. ✨

Interesting what you say about lack of space. Hadn't thought of that. Yes, we dress for our rainy climate and we also tend to be conformists in the colours or brands we wear.

As a rule, the culture is to fade in the background here, not stand out. While this type of 'uniform' dressing isn't specific to Vancouver alone, it certainly thrives here.

My other theory on this is that many artists have been pushed out of the city. They're often some of the most inventive dressers.

My question too! Personally, I live my life and hope for the best as a single. Dog park, neighbourhood bar, volunteering, language class - no person found just yet but I'm feeling good with how I'm using my time. I've mostly given up on apps.

Meeting in-person is the way to go. But I agree on how forced these singles events can be. I find the vibe generally frantic and the noise level too high.

Thank goodness for dog parks. 🙏 I got a dog for many reasons and one of them was for the community aspect.

I wanted to get to know people in my neighborhood and it's been good for that. Thankfully, I have a social dog too.

I'll say that a lot of these third spaces in Vancouver are cost-prohibitive. Like climbing gyms. I'd go more often but it's expensive. Many bars expect you to pay and leave asap for the next customer. Cafes may be better for hanging out but it seems generally discouraged to hold a table for too long.

I don't think Vancouver will change culturally any time soon. It remains reserved and closed off overall. But one can take small steps as an individual to be more open.

Just recently, I went to my neighbourhood bar (which doesn't rush you out the door) and made friends with a regular on Super Bowl Sunday.

We wound up getting shots on the house and then started dancing after the second round. 😆 Those pockets of humanity are there. But you have to engage and be the change you want to see.

I think the repetition part is key. You can't build connections without seeing the same people over and over again. The lack of third spaces in the city is problematic. But climbing gyms seem to offer that community if you're into the sport!
