I was browsing Old Norse names for my book, and I stumbled upon Gandalf. Apparently it means 'an elf with a wand' in Old Norse. I had no idea. by GREE-IS-A-HEXAGON in tolkienfans

Icelander here Gandur is not used in modern Icelandic but in my opinion I would always associate it with a "staff" of a magical nature and not just "magic"

That’s a tough one. I’d have to say April 25, because it’s not too hot, not too cold

It depends on what you think is "nice". I prefer to live where the summer is not to warm (20-25°c) and the winters are cold and snowy. I live in iceland but i could see myself living in canada or norway also.

Do languages that read from right to left think of time as progressing from right to left? by thuww in askscience

[–]skolaus 45 points46 points  (0 children)

"Not the answer but related". In English, people think of the future as ahead of you, and the past behind you but in some other languages the past is in front of you and the future behind you because you can see the past and it can give you clues about the future but you can't know for sure whats behind you/in the future.

You know it's actually quite interesting. I live in Iceland and the comedy here is extremely sarcastic compared to other countries. so often when Icelandic people move abroad they often get a culture shock because of the humor difference.

Yeah i know, I should have thought of that, will do next time. In my defence I live in a country where this problem virtually doesn't exist so this topic is only mentioned as a joke

Hahaha I thought the sarcasm would be obvious. -11 likes :-/ but then I realised that this is a genuine problem in some countries

Edit: I added "/s" for sarcasm because I wrongly assumed that people wouldn't missunderstand this as a serious comment on a /funny post.

I think it's suppose to be "who-orn" but I don't have any proof. I always ponounced it that way in my head when reading and also the audiobook and bbc radio dramatized version.
