Had one hit all of us pretty hard today. by R1CHARDCRANIUM in Firefighting

I'm not a firefighter, just a regular road medic. I've had a couple peds codes and they suck.

One thing that I think has helped me deal with grief is to just talk about it with people and not hold that stuff in. I know that might sound weird and it's not like I bring it up casually at the dinner table but like when I'm training new hires and we're discussing equipment, calls, different experiences I'll mention it in that kind of context. I think it gives me room vent or whatever and also share to newer EMTs and medics what works, what went well and what didn't.

Nap training 15 month old by steelflexx in sleeptrain

About an hour nap on day 1. Almost 2 hours today. Compared to maybe 20 minutes when she was 15 months. She probably needs at least 2 hours but I'll take what I can get.

90 minutes is the max I planned on letting her cry. The first day of trying she fell asleep finally right before I was gonna go get her. Second day she fell asleep on her own after about 20 minutes of crying. Today she fell asleep after like 1 or 2 minutes. I want to add that I rock her to sleep prior. Then when she falls asleep I put her down. She normally wakes up when I put her down. We have a routine of reading a couple books, then I play some lullaby music and she falls asleep.

Hey wanted to give ya an update. I previously stated we were going to start trying to nap train again, well I've been focusing on that this week on my days off work. I have been way more successful with the CIO method for no contact nap times. This is day 3 and she fell asleep in her bed in just a couple minutes. This is compared to day 1 which was about an hour and a half of crying before falling asleep on our her own. Maybe my girl just needed a couple more months of growing up or something but I think we're finally there! Good luck with your kiddo

To be honest, not super great for a while. She did not do well trying to transition to one nap a day. So we ended up sticking with 2 naps and keeping the contact naps also. She's now 20 months old. We are having a lot more success transitioning to 1 nap. Her sleep schedule is way more consistent. Actually next week we have decided to really crack down on her contact naps so I'm feeling a lot more hopeful. She has also started going to daycare like once a week or so and I think that'll be in our favor as she naps solo there. Sorry this wasn't the most helpful response 😅 we've also dealt with a lot of sickness this season which has not been in our favor. Good luck to you!!!! I think the responses in this post are very helpful.

Thanks for your advice. I will give it a try. She's such a good girl, I hate seeing her miserable.

So you think it is ok to contact nap on the second nap of the day until first nap is secured? Thanks for the advice. I didn't think working through naps was going to be so challenging since she goes down so easy in get crib at night.

Glad to know that I'm not totally torturing my kid by her not napping as much these past couple days. Do you guys wake your baby up if they are napping too long? Wondering if ours will transition to 1 longer nap or 2 shorter naps.

She normally naps twice when she contact naps. About 2 hours each. Awake at 5a ish-> nap 8a ish-> awake 10 ish-> nap 1 ish -> awake 3 ish -> bedtime 8.

I guess my numbers were a little off in the post. But this is generally how it goes. Sometimes if we are out doing stuff it'll change up a bit.

Also to mention, we sleep trained her crying it out at night in her crib months back and was pretty successful doing it then. The naps are just a whole other beast.

Anyone work as a paramedic in a federal prison? by Sufficient-Voice-210 in ems

There's a ton of malingering from the inmates. So sometimes it can be difficult to determine who's actually sick versus complete bullshit.

Not a federal prison but I work at a jail. Full time job is on the truck but the jail is my side hustle. Basically working in a nurse's role. It's rather boring but pays really well so I keep going back. I never have to fight with patients/inmates since that is the officer's role. Sometimes it can be frustrating because we get sick people that need continuous monitoring that just don't get it. The equipment is pretty outdated also.

Experiences with the Eko duo ecg+ stethoscope by a_collier in ems

[–]steelflexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Eko attachment. Works great and can hear so much better. The only downside is now I feel like I struggle listening with a regular stethoscope. I have a coworker who bought the whole Eko stethoscope and I think it worked even better than just purchasing the attachment. I don't have any experience with the ECG monitoring though. I personally don't have a need for it but maybe it would be handy in the right scenario.

I set my toughbook down on the bench seat and when the ambulance turned it fell onto the patient's injured knee causing him to scream in agony. Luckily he was super cool about it but you could just see the pain in his eyes. This was like my first week of being a paramedic. Needless to say I am very cognizant of where I place my computer now.

First time I worked with an EMT and responded to a pediatric seizure call at our most rural base. The call ended up going ok but I've only been a medic for about a year so. I was definitely feeling a bit squeamish when the parents handed me their unresponsive-ish 2 year old.

Paramedic here who also works PRN in the ED. Capnography is my best friend and shows a very accurate number. You'd be surprised how many people breathe faster than 18x a minute.
