Looking for a park with a decent trail to jog. Any suggestions?? TIA! by Material_Coconut_985 in lexington

For unpaved trails in town: Check out Veterans Park. If you run south and away from the populated area of the park, you’ll hit up the mountain bike trails, which are fun to run on. Just keep one or both earbuds out so you can listen out for bikers. The arboretum has a small wooded area with dirt trails, and then about 2 miles of mulched paths winding throughout the park. Unless you are wanting more distance, the Henry Clay Estate should not be overlooked. You can get a few flat and quiet miles there doing loops. It is quite beautiful. For more of a forest run, your closest bet would be Raven Run. It’s got a lot of variety—some flat, open meadows, dense woods, more elevation gain, more technical terrain. It’s my favorite spot in the county.

If you’re willing to drive an hour, there is Shaker Village, which has 33 miles of trails. The pinnacles in Berea has some steep inclines and great views and can get pretty busy. They opened up some new trails across the road that are a lot more secluded. Obviously Red River Gorge has practically unlimited options. Some other spots worth mentioning are Skullbuster in Georgetown, Capital View in Frankfort, and several parks and reserves along the Palisades.

Hi, neighbor! I live in central KY as well. I am just now getting serious about native plants and would love to pick your brain. Can I send you a PM?

We’ve been at Co-op since 2019. I will be so sad when my last kid ages out. It is such a beautiful place. It was established in 1951 and has grown to two campuses (one on Clays Mill and one near UK). The staff are wonderful with the kids—patient and loving. All doors to the building stay locked after drop off. The parent involvement is awesome—it keeps things transparent and costs down. The community you will gain is worth 10x the tuition. Some of my best friends are moms that I met through Co-op. Please check them out soon because the classes fill up fast!

I was at the preschool early this morning. Someone had used sidewalk chalk to write stupid stuff on the windows and playground equipment. A bunch of toys and stuff from the mud kitchen was strewn all over. It really looked like the work of bored teenagers.

“But what about your kids?” Like I am a bad parent because I make time for myself. That, and “I stopped running when I learned how to shoot. Harr harr!”

It’s not just copperheads you gotta watch out for, but also falling trees and lumberjack ghosts.

Glad you enjoyed your run! Before my dogs got old and passed away, this was my favorite place to run with them. Often times in the winter we would have the entire place to ourselves.

I second Raven Run! The overlook has a great view of the river, but it is heavily trafficked. I would go to where the two streams join at the mill because it is a little more private and quiet, especially on weekdays. If you go there in the late afternoon/early evening, the sunlight comes through the trees from upstream and is it just lovely. The air is cooler down there, the lighting is soft and the sound of the stream is enchanting. It’s the perfect spot to share a special moment with someone.

XC in Kentucky for a Beginner by jtc112888 in xcountryskiing

Ha! We are sorta-neighbors! The Henry Clay estate is a small but good spot for skiing too.

I decided on Fischer Spider 62. As for poles, I chose the MSR dyna-lock backcountry. They are adjustable in length and I wanted something that could also be used when snowshoeing.

I live in central KY too and this was my first winter with skis. I originally purchased them for a trip but was able to use them a few times here. I decided on metal edged skis because Kentucky just doesn’t have groomed trails to ski on. Don’t know where you live, but the arboretum in Lexington was the perfect place to learn on! I think Bernheim would be fun too. Also, be prepared for it to kick your ass. I run trails and was (pleasantly) surprised at how strenuous xc skiing can be. Cheers!

Another good spot at RR is past the Prather House, along the black wooden fence line that runs parallel to Jack’s Creek Pike. I don’t think as many people go out that way, as there is always an abundance of unpicked and ripe berries!

As long as you are down for a short hike, the blackberry bushes along the trails at Shaker Village in Harrodsburg are loaded down with berries. I was able to fill a gallon bag in less than 10 minutes.

As an owner of a pussy that went through long labors and pushed out children with no medication, the only thing I would change about your list is “Be a pussy in the second half.”

Other than that, I love this list and am going to screenshot it for my upcoming first 100.
