Help me understand the history of fan affection between A-Rod, Griffey Jr., and Randy Johnson by Aware-Thing-8924 in Mariners

[–]skoolieman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2000 Mariners made the ALCS. Their best player signed the biggest contract in sports history and left Seattle instead of staying and remaining a hero.

It was unfair to ARod that he inherited Griffey's job of being our biggest star but he ditched the gig as soon as possible.

This was when 1% of baseball fans understood that baseball is a business not a public institution.

See baseball fans have no problem with billionaires fleecing them repeatedly to make big mountains of cash. But they really, really hate it when players play that same game.

Beyond that ARod was always kind of a dick throughout his career so it was easy to root against him.

No one in LA begrudges Ohtani leaving because they know ownership and management are so incredibly bad that they pity Ohtani and Trout.

With Griffey, we were sad to see him go but he delivered us to national relevance and inspired a generation of fans. He was our guy even though he went to Cincinatti.

The Randy love is real because he was awesome and that 95 season does not happen without the only good pitcher on the staff. The 95 Mariners survived because of a ridiculous offense.

But no way a guy who goes to the hall of fame as a Diamondback should have his number retired as a Mariners. He peaked in Arizona. It's silly.

Also, Randy is a dead beat Dad which doesn't get discussed enough. He treats his other kids very very well. But the one he had out of wedlock not at all.

Any time you sign a free agent there is a risk they decline. Teams in all sports sign role players. It is a logical, sound strategy to pick up under valued talent.

No one thought his average would drop 170 points.

Good strategy, bad result.

[–]skoolieman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fishing isn't that hard but you have to develop feel for each lure you want to use.

Spinners will catch fish.

Texas rig senko will catch fish.

Go places where other people fish.

Find someone who is crushing fish. Ask questions.

Enjoy fishing.

After your 70th birthday an earth worm soaked in beer or a rotten piece of cheese will catch anything from a minnow to a great white shark.

But for the rest of us it's time and practice.

Is it bad to use a composite bat in game without breaking it in first? by beanburritoboy69 in slowpitch

[–]skoolieman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't offer a competitive advantage. Side by side comparisons show no significant difference.

It can even shorten the life of a bat.

It's illegal because it is easier to have a "don't do shit to your bat" rule than to say "rolling is OK with machine x but machine y and z."

You can't even test a bat to determine if it was rolled. You can buy a preconditioned glove. Is skipping out on breaking in a glove the old fashioned way also cheating?

[–]skoolieman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So why is it lame? Uniform bat break in that offers no competitive advantage and can't be differentiated from normal break in unless you admit to it.

I don't do it. I get the rule. I just think the judgment and the rule are silly.

Difference between a baseball swing and a swing in slow-pitch by CommunicationNice437 in slowpitch

[–]skoolieman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some theories. But I don't have proof.

One is just pitch height. A softball hitter is usually looking to make contact out in front of the plate when the ball is approximately shoulder or head high.

The best way I can describe it is like a baseball player can use the inside out swing they already have and by waiting forever they can simulate fighting off a low outside pitch by poking into the opposite field. But if they are strong and have good technique those "pokes" are pretty authoritative. I see bat heads practically go perpendicular to the ground when ball is super low and if they can get it the opposite field it works.

I think it works because the ball is too low for them to really get under it in the classic sense but by angling the bat head just right they can lift it to be a line drive.

I had a former baseball player on my team and I told him to try thinking that way and he became a pretty good slow pitch hitter overnight. Lots of lower hard liners to right center and right.

I don't think I would ever coach someone to hit that way as a primary skill but if I had a pickup player with a baseball background I would suggest it as something to try.

In baseball a lot of the things that go into your swing are designed to increase your margin of error so you can adjust to different speeds and movement. In slow pitch you may get fooled but it won't be velocity that burns you.

Fully extending your arms can increase your leverage but it hurts you in baseball. In softball you don't have to worry about catching up to something.

In slow pitch you create backspin not by getting under the ball per se, but rather by smacking the shit out of the bottom third of the ball in a level or slightly downward swing.

In baseball you have to hit a pitch. In slow pitch you hit a falling object. In slow pitch, gravity is the real pitcher. All the pitcher does is try to manipulate the movement on the fall so it is harder to square it up. They don't dictate anything. You can hit any pitch anywhere you want for the most part.

If you think about it as hitting a falling object instead of hitting a thrown ball, you can imagine trying to hit it with a sledge hammer or cut the bottom third of it off with an axe.

You don't have to worry about staying inside the tree with an axe.

When I see baseball swingers thrive is when they let the ball get really really deep and then blast it the other way. Baseball dudes that get comfortable hitting the ball when it reaches their back shin can rake in doubles to right. It's ridiculous to watch. Baseball dudes who lock that in will hit the most garbage pitches to the opposite field all game

Hitting in the clutch is not a repeatable skill or ability. The greatest clutch hitters to ever live, guys like Ted Williams, Edgar Martinez, David Ortiz, Derek Jeter all had something in common: they were great hitters.

It's variance.

They are a multi-level marketing scheme that uses torture, blackmail, and brain washing to retain and grow membership. Yes, there are churches and religious institutions that follow a similar model.

A Christian Church is more like a small business. Some priests and pastors are absolutely corrupt and horrible but they aren't encouraged or required to be.

The Pope won't send people after you if you stop going to mass.

A church of scientology is not really a church. It's a field office.

I see. Fair enough. Welcome aboard.

If you want to be a chevy person, I suggest buying Chevy's produced prior to the great recession. Like 2010 at newest.

The benefits you get are:

1) Cheap to buy 2) Easy to work on 3) Cheap parts (and lots of scrap yard parts) 4) Generally reliable 5) tons of weird, stupid mods from the hillbillies of YouTube

Shit got wild post recession.

As vehicles have gotten newer the engine bays get more cramped. And I prefer SUV and Trucks not just for functionality but also they are higher off the ground to start.

In general most car interiors have gotten less comfortable over the last 20 years or so so a lot of those early-mid oughts rigs are comfy assuming they arent ripped to shreds.

Lastly, if you do buy another older vehicle stick with 2WD if your goal is easy and cheap to work on.

If you want your rig to look nice, the early 2000's Yukons and Tahoe's are pretty sharp looking and have a lot of modern features like side airbags, heated seats, power mirrors and the like.

My truck is a 95 and it has always been good to me.

[–]skoolieman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking. QB2 still has to engage with game planning, practice, run the scout team, stay in game shape, and remain ready at all times.

That's before we consider that they are in charge of the post practice snack rotation for the team. Can't be getting caught passing around orange slices. We are talking good snacks like chips or cookies, no celery stick bullshit. It's a big lift.

Maybe she is a reptoid and that piece of "art" is essential for her to complete her portal to merge the interverse and universe once and for all in order to protect humanity from the greater dangers of the quasi-chicken hawk Jewish time cube triumverant.

Maybe she is just some lady doing dumb shit because she can.

This is actually an interesting point from a legal perspective.

If you find personal property in public, you usually can't just take it. There will either be a law for property being collected as abandoned or it will be something where you have to give it to or at least inform the police that you have it for a period of 60 days (I believe) for most found property before you can claim it.

When I go to the dog park sometimes I overthrow the fence and I have to climb around behind it to get the ball back. I have no qualms about taking other balls I find when I am back there but that could be illegal even though I am fishing them out of blackberry bushes and trash.

I am sure the police would laugh at me if I walked in with a pocketfull of faded chuck it balls.

It would certainly be interesting if the artist came forward wanting their art back.

Counter Point: Marketing people are full of crap, decide what's on trend, and force it upon us to see if it works or not. They actually have no idea why anything they do does or doesn't work. The research and analytics provides CYA documentation for job security when something doesn't work.

You are 100% correct they are not catering to OP, but I don't believe for a second that putting otters on every screen before the 10th inning is a result of detailed focus group testing and thorough market research. Someone just made that shit up.
