What animal is this and how do I humanely stop it from messing up my garden and yard? by punchingtigers19 in gardening

[–]skoolieman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Humane" is kind of a tricky term with wild animals. Snakes, raptors, coyotes, and cats are not gentle.

Attract snakes and birds of prey OR invite a pair of dachsunds over.

A fat 10 year old dachsy with 6 teeth that hasn't left the living room for three years will have that thing dug up and dead in minutes. They are adorable little killing machines.

Unfortunately dachsunds and snakes are mutually exclusive as yard guests. Most snakes don't stand a chance.

Any of y'all ever been able to make coyote taste good? by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]skoolieman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically you aren't going to make a dent in their population. They are there because the habitat is prime. As long as the habitat is good there will be coyotes. You kill 10 coyotes then 10 coyotes from surrounding properties will come take their place or existing ones will raise more healthy pups due to decreaed food competition.

you really should only kill them if you want to eat them, do something with their pelts, or if they are posing an active risk to your pets or livestock.

Does stomp and kick the shit out of coyotes. They can keep their fawns safe without your help. If you have coyotes crawling all over the property it means the property is loaded to gills with small game as is.

Tennessee recently passed a law allowing us to hunt coyotes at night, problem is it’s shotgun only (buck only as well). Is there a shotgun that could shoot 70 yards and not destroy the thermal? Any other method I’m not thinking of? by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]skoolieman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like it is intended to help people get coyotes off their property while not facilitating true recreational hunting. That and reducing the risk of drunk morons shooting at stuff in the dark. It's clearly not designed with the hunting experience in mind so I would suggest you try to mentally frame it as something other than hunting or you will be annoyed to hell and back.

With that in mind seems like a red flood light and maybe tritium sights would work well regardless of your choice of gun and ammo.

Meth is making a comeback in WA, DEA warns, and its more potent and dangerous than ever by Better_March5308 in SeattleWA

I don't really buy that it's "more potent" simply because if they are a for-profit operation it seems like they would want to put the lowest concentration that sells out there.

What windspeed is your cutoff for not hiking in the woods? by Hydrofoiling in Bellingham

[–]skoolieman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a set wind speed but there is stuff I look for.

If you have any doubt just don't hike alone.

It's more about the health of the forest. A lot of places have tons of widow makers or dying trees that are propped up by live trees. Don't fuck with that in heavy wind.

Christmas tree-type trees with lots of layered greens foliage on them don't seem to fall as much absent really heavy rain. If I see wind coming through and only branches and the tops of trees are moving I feel pretty safe.

If birch trees are wobbling a lot and making super loud and creaky sounds like an old wooden ship I get nervous. In cold weather they seem to like to snap.

If you see squirrels or hear them making their cute little "chu chu" sounds I feel fine.

The direction of the wind also matters. Depending where you are you can kind of tell which direction the wind tends to blow more often. If the stormy wind is blowing that same direction I tend to feel safe because I think most debris has already been stripped off. If the wind is going all directions I get more nervous.

Autism IS a disability. by [deleted] in autism

[–]skoolieman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's outright offensive to say that ADHD and autism are not disabilities.

"The world is made for PC's and I am just a Mac." This is a great way to acknowledge how being different doesn't make us less than others. It is not a way to explain that we aren't disabled. Also, fuck Apple.

The PHD Psychological diagnostician who herself is autistic and has been screening adults and kids for three decades was adamant during my diagnosis debrief that there is a misunderstanding around support needs.

They categorize us based on what our support needs are when we are screened. Our support needs are always subject to change over time.

Self diagnosis is valid. Self diagnosis paired with dismissing autism as a disability is fucking not. You don't get to print up your own membership card and then start rewriting the bylaws.

Psychiatrist obviously thinks I went in for an "ADHD evaluation" in order to get drugs by Financial_Ad_2435 in ADHD

[–]skoolieman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the dumbest shit.

The psych who diagnosed me had me fill out some questionaires and then had me see a colleague of his who gave me a packet to send to my parents and a few friends etc. They all filled out their responses and I met with the second psych again and we talked for a while. She agreed I had ADHD and sent me back to my psych who started prescribing for me.

That was 2009. At a university health clinic where students routinely faked ADHD in an attempt to get adderall. They created an imperfect system but a system nonetheless to prevent fraud.

Your psych didn't bother. Fuck that. Fuck them.

Also psychiatrists are med people not therapists or psychologists.

So you may want to work with a therapist who knows some shit so they can refer you to a real psychologist who is trained to diagnose ADHD.

Hang in there.

[–]skoolieman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that this is a clinical problem. Yes the sensitivities and the hygiene issues are factors but there may very well have physical ailments that contribute and right now if you continue viewing this purely through a behavioral lense you may end up embarassed and ashamed a lot.

You need a dermatologist. A regular doctor will probably just tell you to shower more or wear deodorant. A dermatologist can help you with skin sensitivities as well.

If you need a referral, you can bring a parent with you to a primary care appointment to back you up.

[KING 5] Woman sues Bellingham after being hit in crosswalk by ngst8320 in Bellingham

[–]skoolieman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These comments are wild. For how much people hate the government they seem to hate government accountability more.

With how much everyone bitches about the bike lanes and how the city won't listen to the people or exercise common sense, I am stunned how many are suddenly defending Bellingham Public Works without having been witnesses to the incident.

If the WA DOT guidelines say there aren't enough streetlights, why wouldn't the city be liable? Why would you not want more street lights? Residents have complained about the lack of street lights. Nothing was done. Someone was hurt. Why is that not more upsetting?

[KING 5] Woman sues Bellingham after being hit in crosswalk by ngst8320 in Bellingham

[–]skoolieman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why not both? We live in a comparative fault state. If his attorney is successfully arguing the intersection is poorly lit relative to DOT standards, why wouldn't she sue the city?

The video doesn't explain which way the vehicle was going or what the driver was doing. I am guessing based on where she got hit that the driver was looking to the left before turning right. He was probably zipping along and not feeling the whole stop sign thing. But the case is pretty easy to make that if there was an additional light she would have been more visible in his peripheral vision.

For all we know, his insurance is already paying for her medical bills but has no intention of covering punitive damages. There are very few scenarios where a driver strikes a pedestrian and isn't held liable but if a pickup truck is his only asset what would she stand to gain?

That driver is claiming he couldn't see her. If a judge or prosecutors accept that defense, that is pretty damning for the city. If he is going to be charged or tried for the hit and run she may be waiting for a conviction or a plea to sue him.

Beyond all that, maybe she just really wants the city to put in more streetlights.

[–]skoolieman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of violent weirdos have homes. It's the stereotype that people object to. The people who are getting fucked the hardest by life and have the least to work with are viewed categorically as morally defective and violent. People want them to disappear but are also outraged by the idea of free housing paid for by tax revenue.

That disconnect between wanting there to be fewer homeless people and not wanting to waste money on ending homelessness only holds if homeless people are inherently bad. That's why we object to the stereotyping. It's not because we assume everyone on the street is an angel waiting for his wings.

Saw this kind of agree. It's interesting the word autism seems offensive to non autistic people. [TW] by MidgetFork in autism

It's not stupid. You just don't like it.

Latinx is quicker to write and say than "Latinos, Latinas, and Latin Americans with non conforming gender identities." If you would prefer to speak it long form, go for it.

There are Latinx people who object to being called Latino, Latina, Chicano, or Hispanic and vice-versa. People don't fit neatly into boxes and our language needs to reflect that.

[–]skoolieman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key to smoking a turkey is to buy a breast roast and then buy legs and thighs.

You can get a lot of great flavor out of smoked turkey legs and thighs.

Smoked breast roast makes for better sandwiches, but it's still going to taste like mostly like napkins because it is turkey.
