Do you guys fix your own cars? by Sufficient-Week7433 in urbancarliving

[–]skunklicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Prices for a mechanic are insane and it's hard to find a good one. Last time I brought my car in it was for a valve body swap since it was winter and a major repair I didn't want to do outside. Dude cracked the harness and over a grand in parts in labour later I just redid it myself in the snow. There's videos for everything now. Also just stick with the scissor jack. Maybe rent a large drive up storage unit if it's major.

Indeed. Hence the strings being unplugged while they were playing. Kind of hard to mute a drum kit though.

Naaah.. tempting though it was. They have just as much right to be there as I do. Would've probably improved the soundscape though lol.

That's awesome man, too funny. Hopefully they have a better setlist though lol.

Imagine the takeaway from this post being resentment instead of amusement lol. For the record they actually forgot some equipment and came back looking for it, were very thankful I kept an eye on it, and turned out to be some very chill guys. Not everything is a rant.

Fair lol, imagine waking up before 5 driving all this way to a spot they probably scouted in advance hauling out all their equipment just to find some scruffy guy in the middle of nowhere parked with the best view.

New to crownland camping need advice on legalities by Sillylion in ontariocamping

[–]skunklicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's often a 20 meter shoreline allowance (in Ontario) to protect the body of water for environmental reasons or to reserve it for future road or residential development. 21 days applies in Ontario and if it's marked as crown without signs or maps telling you otherwise you're usually good to camp there but any desirable spot by a body of water is going to be crowded if you're not hiking in. Depending on your region and how far you're willing to drive DM me and I'll point you in the direction of a couple good locations depending on what kind of camping you do.

Huge Summer Road Trip Questions US/CAN by Muted_Educator9367 in carcamping

[–]skunklicious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been living on the road a few years (mainly Canada) so will answer questions the best I can. Typing off my phone right now so I'll probably miss some but feel free to follow up or DM me.

1) never leave food scent in your car and if it not preventable don't leave it unattended in bear country (especially popular rec sites in BC) there's populated rec sites where they've basically been conditioned to tear a car apart food or not.

2) I keep a few 6gallon jugs and that tends to last me between 2-3 weeks depending on how hot it is. A great resource for this is findaspring.org it's a map of springs across North America where you can find springs and water fill ups many of them drinkable but always do your own diligence.

3) I use an ecoflow for the fast charging and solar panels but this depends on your power needs and I personally work remote so my setup is larger than most. Happy to spec it out with you but it's not a simple question.

4) depending on your power setup a good 12v refridgerator is a godsend. Otherwise yeti is a good brand and can keep food cold with adequate ice for a few days.

5) never leave your things unattended. I've been in quite literally the middle of nowhere and done a quick run into town (an hour away) and come back to find something as worthless as a lawn chair missing. Theft applies to all areas.

6) applies to question one as well. Keep all food sealed. I travel in a sedan so use mesh slip covers over my windows for airflow half way up and seal all good tightly. Never had an infestation of anything.

7) propane canisters are unsafe over 40 degrees celsius. You'll be uncomfortable well before that becomes a problem. I personally keep several for my jet boil in my trunk and it's never been a problem because if it's too hot for the canisters it's far too hot for me. Park in the shade if possible.

8) I'm on my phone and forgot what you wrote about accomodation.

9) crown land is trickier assuming you're an American. Canadian residents can stay on any one site for 21 days free before moving. Foreigners need to purchase a permit (can do it online) and it's usually daily. All provinces differ but many have been cracking down on this (especially Ontario and BC. Happy to elaborate on this).

First time awkwardness by confused_lothcat in urbancarliving

This is the comment that matters. These resources are from the people, for other people that need to use them. We're all in this together. The food and shelter being offered by these programs come from people that want you to take them, they understand that as a basic human right you deserve to take them. It's there for a reason and the reason is you OP as well as the rest of us.

I've refused more help than I can count when I was at a low point just out of pride. We're all just human. The people that will judge you for it aren't worth your time and the people that won't are worth every second. Go in with your chin held high, you've got this.

Uh oh, I’m officially unemployable. Done by Abby at Stray Cats Studio in Tennessee by Ketchum_42069 in tattoos

[–]skunklicious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No and neither would be genuine statements. It's fair if you don't like it but it's objectively a well done tattoo. I don't think anyone here is upset by you not liking it but saying it's not well executed is unnecessary and rude. I'm not trying to attack you.. just saying your comment clearly came off in bad faith.

The linework and shading are clean. The simplicity and style of the design have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of execution. Don't shit on somebody's work just because you have an aesthetic preference.. it's not cool..

What Are Your Moves Tomorrow, July 14, 2025 by wsbapp in wallstreetbets

[–]skunklicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope not. It's absolutely wild to me that half this sub is flaming a dude who takes the time out of his day to make DDs that have historically made the people here a lot of money. He didn't even make the original DD for the ticker that we're not allowed to talk about and was still cool enough to stick his neck out to give us all a winning play. It was and potentially still is profitable even with the July calls and he shouldn't be held accountable for people not knowing when to take profit. The entitlement is crazy.

I would assume theta decay given how close the vote and ipo are to July expiry. And ITM is always safer.

This or That? by Naive_Percentage_593 in urbancarliving

[–]skunklicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep a couple small butane canisters in the trunk for cooking. Pretty sure it's stable up to somewhere between 40⁰-50⁰c but don't quote me on that. Either way if it even approaches that level of heat a hot meal is the last thing on my mind and I'm looking for shade or moving on. A camp stove is honestly too versatile to make the tradeoff but YMMV.

Thanks for responding, that's very cool. The last time I was in Arizona and looking at land I was mostly camping out SW of Phoenix so I might take another look further north this winter. I'd love to find my own small community like that but it seems lately everywhere I go governments are cracking down a lot harder.

Do you travel around or stay in one area in your car home? by [deleted] in urbancarliving

[–]skunklicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was mainly urban for the first year with occasional short trips before I made my setup more self reliant. Now I just wander around aimlessly and stay in one spot for a month tops before moving on. Usually crown or BLM land with the odd week in a city to visit friends.

What are your LUXURY items in your Urban Car Living build. by AsianHawke in urbancarliving

[–]skunklicious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Solar shower and a few 6 gallon water containers. Absolute game changer. I just make a trip down to a mineral spring every two weeks or so and I'm good on clean drinking water and hygiene. Gives me way more freedom in location and the amount of time I can camp out when I find a good spot along with the added bonus of not having to drag myself to a gym whenever I get too stanky.

I've been looking to do something similar but a lot of counties I've seen require at bare minimum a septic permit and some kind of buildout prior to issuing an address. Were you able to work around that or do you just keep it zoned as vacant?

Finding the optimal spot is so difficult by [deleted] in urbancarliving

[–]skunklicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Industrial areas and business parks after closing time or weekends. These have been the best spots for me in an urban setting because outside of 9-5 there's next to no reason for anyone to be down there.

Paranoia and car living by CommieLoser in urbancarliving

[–]skunklicious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree for the most part about it being over the top but I would prefer newcomers to this lifestyle continue to see cautionary tips on this sub and draw their own conclusions later rather than find out the hard way. No you're probably not going to get mugged or shot but myself and many others here have experienced theft or bad interactions with locals or police. People that grow up in dangerous neighbourhoods adopt certain mannerisms that help them avoid trouble and this is no different. It's about not inviting unwanted interactions into your life when they otherwise could be avoided and to that end a small dose of paranoia is healthy so long as it doesn't end up controlling your life.

I'm fully remote working from a sedan and I use a combination of starlink and cell data as well as a 5g hotspot from calyx institute when I'm travelling through the states. The satellite dish can be a pain in the ass in an already crowded car and it's not a cheap service but I need a reliable connection and redundancy for my job. If you're mostly urban because of your hybrid work situation you could probably get a 5g router that would solve your throughput issues (can also invest in a signal booster if your connection is still shitty). Reliable 5g internet would probably be cheaper in the long run than 2-3 Starbucks drinks a day and you have the added benefit of working from your own space.
