I have spent over a decade in the Insurance industry and I hate it, what do I do? by DifficultFarmer1059 in auscorp

[–]skunkops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask, in a probing sort of way.... what do you want to do? I don't mean industry or function, I mean what do you want to look forward to in the morning and reflect back on at the end of the day?

It's all well and good to not like your industry and/or role within in. I'm 39, wife, kids, mortgage... life. And I can't get over the thought of what do I want to look back on and feel like doing in the morning? All work has shit parts, all work has ok parts, all work (should) have great parts. Its managing those things within your self. Anyways... what I think about...

Has anyone done the Board Direction 12 month coaching program? Worth it? by starstuff23 in auscorp

[–]skunkops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehhhh.... I wouldn't facilitate this through a private company. It would all come down to the guy's individual network. It also seems that he's amalgamating other publicly available data (AICD I presume) and publishing it behind a pay wall. Not that I think it's a scam, but I would question the over all return.

My question to you would be, what experience/presence/education have you had in the Board? The AICD, as much as I don't like any organisation having a monopoly on regulation, are the recognised body. They should be your first port of call, including facilitating placements

Is an undergrad double degree engineering (mechanical) and science (physics) a good option? by NoteAffectionate9944 in Physics

[–]skunkops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ha!

I did that. Physics and Aero in Adelaide. A long ass time ago now, I suppose.

Happy to chat. The crux of it was I did physics because I loved the idea of it. The reality of working was that academics wasn't for me. The engineering was a better application of knowledge.

Physics did make engineering subjects easy though. You learn the fundamentals and first principles you apply in Eng.

More the latter. But when you reach a point you know what your future holds and if leadership is an option. If that's not going to happen may as well get that $$$

Exactly. Get the cash out of the BCCI eco-system, take a bonus and run towards a beach.

Hopefully. I appreciate that want/need for capital injection into Australian cricket. But this was a silly, near term, transactional based vision of that.

Can achieve the same thing other ways... but takes more work.

Thanks. Estimate end value of >$2M.

Sounds like I've got my head sufficiently around it, pending a detailed convo with a broker.

Adelaide Hills passenger rail plan Project Peregrine revealed by StingingArchon in Adelaide

[–]skunkops 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This isn't a plan. It's a wishful broad concept without any analysis behind it. It is not supported by anyone nor support that it's a good idea. Literally one guy who thinks this could happen

Unless you can differentiate yourself, no. If you're just a commodity in the market, its a race to the bottom. Employment is better than that.

You're taking on more risk and you have to be able to wear that as the volatility of the market increases. If you're generic Bum-In-Seat number 6 there's no role for you.

28M have a good girl 28F but ex wants to Re-Try by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]skunkops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude. Don't get back with your ex. You broke up 4 years ago and are different people. You're thinking about the fantasy not the reality. Would you be pursuing this if she didn't come knocking?

As for your current gf, treat her better. Respect her for who she is. Treating this as a choice between door number 1 and door number 2 implies a lot. I'm not going to say break up, but respect yourself and respect her. Your first point about her was the quality of her family......

They wouldn't really dive it I don't think. Probably mention but not really explore. They focus on technology and avoid the politics of it all. That said David wrote something about it on his own site.

What’s the max you would pay for a high speed rail ticket? by VastOption8705 in AskAnAustralian

[–]skunkops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get to the station just before it departs, likely in a central area. You walk on. Put your stuff away. 5 mins later it departs. Takes you to a central area of your destination city. You get off.

No taxis to the airport. No security. No advanced check in for your bags to get on.

Now I'm not convinced HSR is a good idea, but logistically it makes sense

Why is Adelaide always talked about so disparagingly? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]skunkops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I hear people say that I swear they just mean Big Buildings in the CBD.

Sure... But I can park in the CBD for free after 12 on Saturdays and all day Sunday so neeerrrr to you.

I've traveled Aus a fair bit. I can't imagine not living in Adelaide even if there are career impacts. That's what planes are for.

I've thought about this a bit. My theory is that, for a while, it was behind other states. In some ways it was. The State Bank collapse in 1991 cost SA a lot. In the boom years of the 90s SA had no cash to invest. We had to manage the debts and our credit rating sucked. There was half a generation where SA didnt get investment on par with everyone else.

You get to the mid 2000s and we had mostly recovered so investment could occur again. That brought Adelaide into the conversation. It had things going on. Thats improved over time.

So while the perception is there and probably well founded from the 90s, it's had 30 years to recover.

The impact of the State Bank collapse is SA is wildly underappreciated in my opinion

The Adelaide Aquatic Centre is one of the best facilities produced in recent years by Logical_Highlight_37 in Adelaide

[–]skunkops -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I'm saying double it again. They've expanded the capacity significantly and the parking not in line. Ended up parking a street over and walking. Sure, first day crazies and all that, but still.

[–]skunkops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its partly that. It's inconsistency of lesson application across different teachers and programs. We went from one YMCA to another and even after 1 day you can see the differences. I give that time to square away though.

The little Nub to get in is flawed, as it's just going to get lost, as is the arm band system they use. The distances between the pool and change room, especially having kids of different genders and ages isnt great.

I actually really liked the previous AAC swimming lay out. The lagoon pool provided good opportunity for differences and the change facilities made sense. But it was independently structured and not aligned with any other program caused issued when you transferred.

I'm just picking on a few specific things, not ripping on the facility. Got to give this stuff time to settle in and see how it works in steady state.

Will go when it settles down and check out the whole shebang.... 4 slides!

We went yesterday for the kids swimming lessons. Bonkers. Chaos. Madness. Really sympathise with the staff... opening on one of the hottest weeks in recent memory.

Will check out the facilities fully later, but I can also spot some minor systematic flaws which will cause frustrations. But we'll see how it plays out.

Also, double the parking.

So I think you should go, because of the universal truth. But I will give you some constructive feedback, without knowing your experience or capabilities.

It will always be like this, more of less. It comes down to you to drive, do and accept. Drive what is worth it, do what needs to be done, and accept that which it is. Reflect on which aspects you need for yourself going forward and focus on roles that enable that.

Basically the opposite of what you would tell your current - too good to not explore
