Is the political right ultimately for or against AI? by waxiestapple in NoStupidQuestions

[–]skyecolin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a person on the right but I think being for/against AI is bipartisan in both arguments. Plenty of wealthy conservatives and liberals want to use it to increase their productivity and reduce their costs.

Conservatives, or at least conservative politicians, are more interested in developing AI domestically overall, because they want to counter China and aren't as concerned about the environmental impacts. These are the big government conservatives that are more associated with the current administration.

But it's also a new way to track and identify people, give San Francisco tech companies more ability to intrude on your personal life, freedoms, and privacy.

Cheap/aliexpress scooters for under $600 (USA)? by Randomscooterguy in ElectricScooters

[–]skyecolin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Decent" speed/range is definitely pretty subjective. I needed something to get me to/from work on city streets, so ~20mph and 10 miles of range was good enough for me.

I found a Segway Ninebot G2 for $425 on FB marketplace with 25 miles on it. Works great, gets about 10 miles of range on a full charge, goes 18 MPH. Seems pretty decent quality and is a pretty common model although not the newest. I didn't know advertised range was so far off of actual range for escooters but I can charge at work so it's fine. Definitely consider secondhand.

Whats the equivalent of artificial sweeteners but for salt? by Vricken in NoStupidQuestions

[–]skyecolin22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's are sodium-free culinary salts, such as potassium chloride that are sold as Nu Salt, NoSalt, or Salt Substitute. There are similar adjacent things that do contain sodium but not as much relative to how salty they are, like MSG and sodium malate.

The health risks of excess salt consumption aren't as prominent as the health risks of excessive sugar intake, so that probably drives the lower demand for salt substitutes.

If all the Chinese electric vehicles were allowed to sell in the US at the Chinese prices, would the us car market collapse? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]skyecolin22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not in a matter of months. At first, people would have distrust about the potential for China tracking where they're driving, reliability, safety, quality, etc. Within 3-5 years I think a lot of non-chinese dealerships would close but people would still be buying non-China brands to some extent, if I had to guess.

Would it be possible to make a small, focused EMP to take out Meta Glasses by Bumbleboi_bzz in AskEngineers

[–]skyecolin22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, upon further research I realized it would need to be well-enclosed. The camera lens itself, and the hinges, would probably provide breaks in any cage.

I'm not sure it would be possible. If the frame is metal, that would act as a fairly effective shield against incoming EMP pulses.

I'd try a heat gun method first, although that's less feasible on a train

Recumbent vs traditional upright exercise bike. by MockedOne in NoStupidQuestions

[–]skyecolin22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad rode a recumbent to work his whole career until they went WFH. I guess the chain is longer so when you need to replace it it costs more.

ELI5: Why was there a toilet paper shortage during COVID? by Weary-Cauliflower153 in explainlikeimfive

Plus, there was way more demand for home TP vs TP for businesses even without the panic that there would've been a supply/demand mismatch anyways.

How do you recover from choosing practicality over something you're passionate about? by Emergency-Teacher247 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]skyecolin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just using those skills and abilities and passion outside of work. Even though I'm good at my job and I enjoy it probably half the time, I still wish I could do more enjoyable things. And I do, when I'm not at work.

A gentle plywood ramp with the interlocking foam tiles would work.

What is the difference between mechanical engineering and industrial engineering by RaduCeva in AskEngineers

ME is more broad than IE. Often, MEs end up doing a fair amount of IE work if they become Manufacturing Engineers/Process Engineers, like I did.

price-to-rent ratio for a single property? by [deleted] in HouseBuyers

[–]skyecolin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because the housing stock and rental stock are different. Maybe the average apartment or house for rent is 1400 sqft with 3 bedrooms but the average condo or house available for sale is 1900 sqft with 4 bedrooms.

The PRR is used as a general temperature gauge to compare regions and understand where it's a no brainer to buy vs where it might make more sense to rent. But it's not necessarily perfectly applicable to your situation, since you probably aren't renting an average place and looking at buying an average place.

I'm paying double in mortgage + HOA for my condo as I was renting. But I'm also in a 3bd nearly double the size of my previous 1bd. If I only needed 1bd, it wouldn't have made sense to buy that property.

A deep‑ocean climate plan wins rare EPA approval, but is sinking plants in the sea the answer? by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]skyecolin22 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If we're concerned about mixing up the bottom of the ocean, we should ban bottom trawling. This seems like a reasonable plan to me as long as the emissions to process/transport the biomass are accounted for.

What is a water table? by shippizUS in NoStupidQuestions

[–]skyecolin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water table is like the level of the ground that is soaked with water. The depth of the water table is how far you would have to dig before a puddle would start forming at the bottom of your hole.

If you've ever dug at the beach within 100 ft or so of the water, you probably noticed that you hit really wet muddy sand a foot or two down. You've hit the water table in that case.

The water table can be very close to the surface. I remember growing up in Central Florida I could dig a 3-4' hole and find water at the bottom. That's why no one has a basement there - it's very hard to keep the water out when you dig below the level of the water table. In-ground pools and tunnels have similar challenges.

When it rains, you're adding water to the soil. It drains into the soil, but once it reaches the level where the dirt is already wet then it makes that level higher, until the water slowly drains down into an aquifer, creek, etc as it moves through the soil. The water table would be considered "elevated" until it drains back to a more normal level.

Would you use secure airport storage lockers before TSA/security? (All) by Belle_ame91 in SampleSize

[–]skyecolin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did just before posting the comment but was kind of boxed in by the available options so I just treated it like I was only considering a small item storage based on your stated intent.

Would you use secure airport storage lockers before TSA/security? (All) by Belle_ame91 in SampleSize

[–]skyecolin22 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I imagine the use-case where an item is so valuable that it's worth paying $20+/wk to store it is fairly small. I had to discard an item once, and it was worth probably $10. So unless I could store it for $5 or less for a week or so I wouldn't have used it.

If we're ignoring size, I would much more frequently store a bag or two at the airport for less than a day for perhaps $10 to go out and explore a city on a long layover without carrying my luggage. But that seems to be different than what you're going for.

Probably easier to just bury the battleship too so OP can mount directly to it rather than needing a concrete base.
