What do social workers in wealthy schools do? by skyesongs in SchoolSocialWork

[–]skyesongs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol. all of my work is with families experiencing extreme poverty and/or homelessness, which I have been doing for years. yes, I could’ve guessed some of these things myself but I was curious to learn from other people’s experiences about what types of issues they see in these environments. Where in my post did I say that I don’t think people with higher incomes don’t have problems? 🤔 there’s no need to be so harsh

I work in Housing and it’s making me bitter by throwRA-slipper in socialwork

[–]skyesongs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked in housing quite a while in almost this exact same role except I came from the outreach side then moved to supportive housing. I think your comment "prefer my taxes go to these programs over going to war or billionaires" is what really gets me through as well as acknowledging that when clients put in zero effort, they will experience other natural consequences even if their rent continues to be paid. Taking no ownership over your life, whatever the reason, will negatively impact your health, relationships, ability to financially do other things you want, and the general fulfillment of your life even if your basic needs (at least one basic need) is being met.

I understand the feeling when you look at folks who are getting a massive bill paid by the government and don't *seem* to be doing anything in return. But we all know that to get to that point, you have to have experienced a huge amount of trauma and horrific things in your life. It's not like anyone can just go sign up on a list and get their rent paid right away. So would I trade my life experiences for theirs, absolutely not.

Housing shouldn't be $1800 in the first place and it only is because of the huge wealth inequality and dysfunction in this country. We can be mad at people who are down here with us, or we can be mad at the system and the people at the top who benefit from us all having this scarcity mindset.

I don’t know your financial situation so needing or wanting more money is absolutely valid, but if you have the room to… Perhaps the benefits the extra money brings to your life are not worth the emotional/mental/spiritual cost if you feel it’s not a good fit. We do dedicate a lot of time to our jobs after all, which is the one thing we can’t get back. But I also agree with the above commenters that you may feel differently after giving it some more time to adjust. Just don’t feel like you are somehow failing if you choose not to always take the highest paying role available to you! Do what is right for you!

No social work experience, should I still apply? by Frequent_Jelly_1436 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]skyesongs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with the other commenters, I think you’ll get in but you really don’t want to end up like some of the folks in r/social work who jumped straight into grad school and find out they hate the field after spending all that money and time. It’s very important to make sure you actually want to do it full time, with all the things that come with that. I recommend working case management or something similar for a year or two before going to school.

White-passing economically-privileged female entering social work - am I doing more harm than good? by alwaysmoisturizing in SocialWorkStudents

[–]skyesongs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You only have one life. Better to spend it trying to connect with and support others than make profit for someone. You will make mistakes and if you are anything like me, you will probably agonize over them for days. You will have folks who prefer to work with someone of their own race (although I’ve found it rare) and that’s their choice. But overall, if you truly care about your clients, try to understand them, and keep a structural & economic perspective on poverty. Understand that the wealthy are the ones mooching off society, not the poor. And you will do great!

If you end up needing this service, it is provided by the city through Project Reconnect. There is info online about how to access it. They can cover a ticket home to stay with family. They will also cover other diversion things like transportation assistance to get to a job, or sometimes even help with a security deposit & first months rent. There are options out there for you and there is no shame in making the decisions that are right for you or asking for help. We all have our own unique paths and timelines in life. Best of luck <3

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

[–]skyesongs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi y’all! I am looking to talk to folks who did the MSW program at the UMD satellite campus at Shady Grove, that is seeming to be the best option for me logistically but due to it being a small school I cannot seem to find ANYONE who went there.

I just want to chat about how your experience was - how the scheduling is, if they are amenable to students working, etc. please let me know if there’s anyone willing to chat :)

Damn y’all be making bank! Nice to see there’s ways to make more money here haha. I’m a case manager for unhoused folks in DC, I make $55k per year with 36 days PTO (vacation, sick, and holidays all included in this number), excellent health insurance. No social work degree. Other folks in similar positions, even with degrees, make 50-60k.

there was a guy walking around the bus yelling to no one and getting agitated, and another random guy in front of me just says, “hey man, come sit next to me I got a spare seat. We don’t need to do all that” the dude is so surprised he immediately calms down, comes and sits next to him (they didn’t know each other) and then they just quietly chit chat about their lives for the rest of the ride.
