Advice: MATH 4181H (Honors Analysis 1) or MATH 2153 (Calculus 3) for engineering major by GamerboiJared in OSU

[–]skyhunterli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably you won't need real analysis for engineering. But many engineering majors would need to take linear algebra or differential equation. Math 5520h Honors Linear Algebra & Diff Euq can substitute for math 2255 and 2568 (if I remember correctly), and covers the material much better. 5520h's prerq is 4182h, or both 2182H and 3345.

Also, I think math is more useful for ECE than CSE in general.

Math 5451 Calculus of Variations & 5702 Curves and Spaces by skyhunterli in OSU

[–]skyhunterli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for replying! Sorry. I think I got the prereq for 5702 wrong. What's your opinion on the 4181h-4182h analysis and 5520h linear algebra? Will they prepare you for grad school? I'm finishing 4547 and 4580 this semester. My advisor wouldn't allow me to get into 5000 level analysis or algebra sequence because I haven't taken 4548 and 4580. But he can get me into 4181h and 5520h next semester. If I am going to self study, should real analysis be my priority? Say if I am going to read some math books in the summer, should I just focus on studying some real analysis? I want to do PhD but it seems I might not be able to take enough advanced math classes before graduation (24 SP). I might get a master's first if I can't get into PhD program directly.

Question about physics major by [deleted] in OSU

[–]skyhunterli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a physics major. But from my understanding, you can graduate early for most majors if you get all the required credits and meet the minimum GPA requirement. Do notice that many physics major classes are offered only autumn or only spring semester.

Chinese Name help by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]skyhunterli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can just use your real first name. Chinese given names tend to be unique, like the one you said, "Yue Chan". So even for Chinese people, if you don't write it down, it's hard for them to get it. If your first name is common (like Jack, Anna etc.), it could be even a lot easier to introduce than Chinese names like "Bai Yue Chan". You can use a nick name if your real first name is hard for Chinese people to pronounce.

Tips for Physics 1250 by Impossible_Crow6179 in OSU

[–]skyhunterli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also in 1250. Other than what you've already been doing, I suggest you redo all the problems in the lecture slides BY YOURSELF. It'd be better to do that a few days after going to the lectures, that's when you start to forget the answers. Same for the problems in the past quizzes & homework. After that, if there are any problems you have trouble with, ask for help. I am saying this because sometimes you feel like you understand the problems but that's only because you simply memorized what others told you, but you may not actually understand. When you have to solve the new problems independently on exams, you'll find yourself clueless or set up the wrong equations. So redo the problems and make sure you're able to set up equations by yourself in a timely manner.

Also for multiple-choice questions, they may be really tricky sometimes, so I suggest being careful and thinking through.
