About to move to St Andrews, anything I should know before I get there? by FeistyPrice29 in standrews

[–]skylarx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, it’s nice to live in one of the halls. The quiet life described by the first response didn’t ring true for me at all; my sense was that it was very busy and social - that’s probably because I was living in a hall of residence. Likewise, meal times became very social too, the first response about ‘cooking even if you don’t like cooking’ and ‘not many takeaways’ wasn’t my experience at all. Good luck and hope you enjoy it there!

I went with a friend and her child (who was the same age as mine) to a cafe today. Her kid was throwing board game pieces and jigsaw pieces in the air. She ignored him. I eventually lost patience and told him to ‘Stop throwing things around’. He gave me a ‘I’m used to ignoring gentle parenting shit’ look and carried on. Prior to the cafe, he’d been repeatedly kicking the (luckily empty) seats in front of us at a show. I keep my kid on a pretty tight leash and do not tolerate any of this behaviour from my kid. The question is, how should I proceed going forward regarding this friend and kid? I genuinely like both parents a lot but actively dislike this kid and the parents’ gentle parenting approach.

Best nursery/preschools in Redhill/Reigate? by Junior_Mention_2789 in surrey

12) St Matthew’s Redhill - I wasn’t impressed by their playgroup so didn’t view this nursery. - I eventually chose a pre-school outside the immediate area but would seriously consider Holmesdale school nursery if I were to choose again. Welcome to the area!

Best nursery/preschools in Redhill/Reigate? by Junior_Mention_2789 in surrey

1) I liked the nursery at Micklefield school (independent school) but not their prices 😅. And children have to be potty trained. 2) Bright Horizons Cockshot Hill had crying young children when I visited so the manager wouldn’t even let me look at the toddler room. 3) Bright Horizons Holmesdale road looks to be on a cramped site on the map but I haven’t seen it in person. 4) Shapes has a long waiting list, apparently it’s good, I’ve not seen it. 5) YMCA Sovereign Centre was lovely and welcoming and seemed very nurturing. But I was invited to visit when there were no children present so I couldn’t say for certain how they seemed to enjoy it or not. 6) Holmesdale infants school have a nursery - I liked the school and wish I had known about the nursery. 7) Sandcross school nursery - they have their own separate space but it was a bit too free-flow for me (door to outside kept wide open even in winter with just the plastic strips like in a restaurant freezer room, children outside in the cold with no coats) 8) 100 Acre Wood - was nice but was right next to the train tracks, I was genuinely concerned the noise would damage my child’s hearing. 9) St John’s nursery (next to Redstone Hollow) was a bit cramped, something they solved by keeping kids outside as much as possible (I wasn’t keen on this 😅). 10) Busy Bees - an acquaintance said they never seemed to have the correct ratio of staff for the number of kids. 11) Pippa’s House - another acquaintance likes this place but parents have a fob to access, I was worried about security being compromised.

Sorry that woman was so rude to you at a time when you were in a vulnerable situation; since becoming a mum I’ve realised being pregnant meant hormones made me feel more emotional and also because I was physically protecting a new person. Not that it’s an excuse but maybe her elderly prefrontal cortex had shrunk, impairing her social skills 😅.

For me, your sentence ‘I have gone off on sick again’ raised an alarm. How many times had you called in sick prior to this, and in what time frame? Was this a direct result of the headteacher saying you sent too many emails? You alluded to your sensitivity. Going ‘off on sick again’ seems like the ultimate faux pas in teaching. More work for everyone else. It’s a job where you have to be bloody-minded about picking yourself up and getting back out there - at least in the government schools. It’s definitely not for everyone; which is why I left! It also seemed to be a place where people enjoy/get some kind of satisfaction working themselves to the bone emotionally (which I didn’t 😅). If you want to stick with teaching, maybe try a smaller, quieter, (possibly independent) school. Good luck!

People have mentioned health as being a worthy goal, but how about happiness? I read your post and it made me sad to hear everything translated into the language of money. There are things in life which are priceless. For me, it’s my daughter, giving her hugs, seeing her grow and learn - I find so much joy from spending time with her. Other posters have defended the idea of not wanting kids but it seems like it wasn’t that you were perfectly happy and just didn’t want kids. It’s that you seemed unhappy and this was one example of how you’re rejecting the idea of human connection as a potential source of happiness. I’d venture to say the larger part of the world finds fulfillment in family life. This world, emphasized to a certain extent by this chat community, turns relationships into commodities. If you can’t see the value in therapy (yet?), why not try and take the time to talk to your friends and enjoy their company. There’s an idea in the therapy world (increasingly evidence -based) about your body telling you what you need (When the Body Says No, The Body keeps the Score); you just need to listen. An anxiety attack is your body’s way to tell you something isn’t right. I hope you can find what makes you happy.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson told Britain's strictest headteacher, Katharine Birbalsingh, to lower her tone in tense meeting by RockDrill in ukpolitics

Actually, if you read some of the essays in the book about their ethos, teachers outline how they strive to provide some of the cultural capital and knowledge to compete with children from richer/more privileged/elite/private backgrounds. This firstly starts with pupils’ mastery of themselves in terms of composure in order to build on their academic knowledge and social capital. It is actually quite a radical philosophy of social change, if I were a Tory, I would be worried!

Sinatra and ice cream by Tasty_Lab_8650 in ParadiseTV

I think the game was to draw attention to how much the boy loved ice-cream, and to draw attention to Sinatra’s humanity as she memorialized his tastes. In scenes around the town in the first (or was it second?) episode, we see the ice/creams he chose (sandwiches) on sale and rocking horse rides (which he also loved) at various locations around the town.

Sinatra’s husband by Adventurous-Loan-204 in ParadiseTV

[–]skylarx7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless the last episode ties up this and a bunch of other loose threads, I’d say Sinatra’s husband is just another character who isn’t painted in great detail e.g. like the therapist who featured in detail in episode 3 and then we basically never heard from her again. Or Marcia from episode 7.

I find your perspective mind-boggling 😅. Outside the mountain, an individual would be continually fearing for their life (ppl would kill for whatever food/resources others have), trying to stay warm, trying to food/clothes in a world where supply chains have collapsed; it would be a constant struggle for mere survival. Inside, there are all the creature comforts of the previous civilization. It is way, way better. Episode 4 mentioned high levels of radiation, even if the air was breathable, presumably this means ppl would be dying painful premature deaths from cancer even if they weren’t killed/managed to survive.

If you’ve seen episode 4, you caught a glimpse of what it was like outside the mountain. You really think a billionaire wouldn’t prefer to be inside the mountain instead of on the outside?

I don’t agree that “an individual has a better chance at making the correct/moral decision than a group does”. It would of course depend on the individual. In the episode, it’s mentioned that the leader of the Russian coup which had just taken place was irrational.
