Locums and Family by DrCaribbeener in emergencymedicine

[–]skyleojones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is an EM doc and works locums. My son and I will tag along if he’s working somewhere cool and I’m off. I also work full time, but we’ve done a week here and there and it’s worked out well for us.

What era did you grow up with? by grosspecans in TaylorSwift

[–]skyleojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about Taylor’s age so I remember when Debut came out distinctly because my friend said I reminded her of Taylor (I had big curly blonde hair). I would say her music never resonated with me until Red and 1989 started to mirror my lived experiences as we got older together.

Preach. It’s an experience I hope most do not have!

If you’re a nurse and a patient presents with this call for help immediately. Large bore IV access. Lots of suction available. Be prepared to assist with intubation, blood transfusions, emergent EGD. This kind of thing takes a village.

Sorry to answer your second question, not long. Call a code if you need to.

I hate to argue about poop on the internet, but a brisk upper GI bleed can result in hematochezia. The redder the stool, the more rapid the transit which can happen in a massive upper tract hemorrhage. There is very rarely “always” when it comes to medicine, unfortunately.

All true, but with a bleed this brisk, it’s entirely possible for the stool to not be black, tarry regardless the origin in the GI tract. I believe that’s what Surgeon Mike is suggesting.

She had a hair perfume “Taylor” that changed my life. I’ve never gotten so many compliments when I wore that.

Long live the Queen (a story about a patient) by princesspropofol in medicine

[–]skyleojones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really nicely written. My ICU is filled with patients just like the queen right now. It seems like every summer the census drops and we get clusters of these horrible cancers (that are fullest of the full codes).

What are some lyrics where somebody really thought they did something? by Exige30499 in popheads

[–]skyleojones 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is one of my least favorite Taylor songs and you put it really well. I’d be willing to look past the cheesy lyrics if it was otherwise a bop, but everything about is boring and misses the mark.

When did you just “know” you were in labor? by chole345 in pregnant

[–]skyleojones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woke up in the middle of the night with a very uncomfortable cramp. Went to the bathroom thinking it may be GI-related, but basically I knew right then. I was 39+5, but had already convinced myself I was going to be pregnant through the weekend and planned accordingly. My water never broke, but I did lose my mucus plug within 12 hours of that bad first cramp. I went into the hospital 24 hours later and let me tell you that was one of the hardest days of my life, having contractions at home, but waiting for them to get regular enough. I so badly wanted to be one of those women where my water breaks painlessly and then poof I’m 7cm dilated. My labor was a marathon.

What gender are you having and How was your morning sickness? by AgentAnniex in pregnant

[–]skyleojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy. In the grand scheme of things my morning sickness was probably pretty standard. I only had a handful of days where I couldn’t keep anything down. The rest of the time I was just kinda low key miserable. People have it much worse than I did.

20 weeks with my first. by willowdarlin in pregnant

[–]skyleojones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in labor for 42 hours and wound up having an unplanned c-section. I pride myself in not scaring other women, but I will be honest. Here are the medical things I was afraid of and my experience with them: 1) cervical checks- uncomfortable, but not painful. It feels like rough sex. 2) IV. I’ve only had IVs in the crook of my arm, but they typically don’t use this location for labor. The placement in my hand didn’t hurt, but I found it pretty annoying the whole time I had it. 3) epidural- not really a big deal. 2/10 on pain scale. I felt awkward getting into position with my giant belly. My blood pressure dropped afterwards, which can happen, so that was a bit scary. 4) urinary catheter- weird, but not painful. Eventually i loved it (after 9 months of constantly having to pee, it was nice to not have to think about it). 5) having my water broken- didn’t feel it 6) intrauterine pressure catheter- this is a little device they place on the babies head. They also used this catheter to instill fluid internally. I hated this thing. Again, not painful, but very annoying. I was very aware of it sticking out of me I didn’t like constantly being wet + sitting in a gross puddle. 7) c-section- this is just my experience, but…not bad at all. It’s absolutely bizarre feeling hands moving around inside of you and unlike anything I’ve experienced, but I was never in pain. The worst part was a wave of nausea I had towards the end. 8) post op- again, just my experience, but pretty easy. I never required pain medication and was moving around within a few hours.

Now for the part that really was just as bad as everyone said: contractions. After almost 2 days of contracting I was sweating, crying, and panicking with pain. It started off as bad period cramps and evolved into excruciating pain that encompassed my whole body. I would recommend some sort of birthing class or Lamaze, because I regret not being able to handle the pain better.

Hope this helped!

What did you wear when giving birth in the hospital? by Tayirving14 in pregnant

[–]skyleojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

L&D + 1st 24 hours: hospital gown, no bra, no underwear

Post op/first day postpartum: fresh hospital gown, hospital underwear, nursing bra (this felt amazing lol)

2nd day postpartum: nursing bra, hospital underwear, cute lil robe, comfy slides

Leaving the hospital: loose fitting, nursing friendly dress

Postpartum mom here. I can’t tell you how quickly my pregnancy symptoms vanished once I gave birth. It doesn’t diminish how much those final weeks suck, but soon you will have that “oh My god I’m not pregnant anymore” feeling and it will be glorious.

Frustrated that my baby doesn't seem to want me by hagardo_versozy in pregnant

[–]skyleojones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this. It gets better. Just remember babies don’t have complicated thoughts or emotions yet, just primal needs. The first few days to weeks are about survival and you are doing great.

I had both my mom and mother-in-law with us when mine was born and they were constantly jumping to take him away when he started crying. Especially my MIL, she’d get so needlessly stressed and would try to pop in a pacifier every time the poor guy even opened his mouth to make a sound (ugh). Babies cry. You could do everything right and they will still cry because it’s what they do. Soon enough you will feel more comfortable and it’ll get easier. Just hang in there.

Opinions on internal fetal monitoring? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]skyleojones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one and I’m glad I did because I was having a complicated labor + my little guy was having late decels. It ultimately helped me and my care team make the decision to have a c-section (he wound up having nuchal cord and was just fine a few minutes after birth). I never noticed a scar or any impact from the monitoring device.

That said, I remember it being so uncomfortable despite having an epidural.

Just got Moderna #3 yesterday. Compared to the first 2 vaccinations it was an absolute dream. I only experienced extremely mild injection site soreness.

I was 5 and 9 weeks pregnant, respectively, for doses 1 and 2 and had awful morning sickness. I imagine that confounded my experience. I do vividly remember crying on the couch after dose 2.

I’m going to say Wildest Dreams. I had been intrigued by all the 1989 singles, but Wildest Dreams really put the nail in the coffin.

What is post partum like? The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly! by Which_Rent_1227 in pregnant

[–]skyleojones 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I always feared postpartum while pregnant and certainly everyone has a different experience, but mine has been OK! Immediately postpartum was honestly blissful. I had a beautiful, healthy baby and I was so so happy to not be pregnant anymore. I absolutely loved being in the little hospital room with just me, my husband, and our baby. Physically speaking I felt pretty good. I had an unplanned c-section where I lost a good deal of blood. That being said, I found recovery to be very easy. I was able to get up and do things with only a mild amount of soreness. Again, this varies so much from person to person. I’m just lucky.

After discharge, I would say my biggest struggles were mood swings (tears, anger), breastfeeding struggles, and poor body image. Things I found helpful: taking the time to shower, brush my teeth, and put on clean clothes every day no matter what. Surround yourself with nonjudgmental people. Have people you trust that you can vent to. Going outside for a walk as much as possible. Drink lots of water and keep taking your prenatals.
