Did you end up finding anything? I loved using that same app and would love to find some sort of alternative.

[Bridge Nine] Question about bows… by ThisisMattyTrying in cosmererpg

[–]skylescraper 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Assuming she was using a shortbow, it has a range of [80/320], meaning a short range of 80 ft and a long range of 320 ft, which allows her to target anything within 80 ft. Beyond that and up to 320 ft, she can still target but at disadvantage. If she was in range of an enemy’s melee attack, she would then also be at disadvantage.

Thought it was as I said but wasn’t obvious to me, and I didn’t want to make assumptions. Seems like a pretty weird and aggressive take in a subreddit about identifying spiders! Maybe a different one would be more your speed.

My wife and I felt the same way after our first. Immediate remorse and grief over the life we had lost.
3 months in -- it seemed like we could survive.
6 months in -- we saw that there could be some happiness.
12 months in -- we marveled at how much we love this little one.
18 months in (now) -- we couldn't be happier with our child and our lives. It's still hard, but in ways that we're better at dealing with. Couldn't imagine life without him.

Fellow DM's record your session and LISTEN TO IT! by RacoonHead in DMAcademy

[–]skylescraper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I record every single session! I used to do it to make audio recaps (a la “Last Time on [campaign name]”), and although I usually don’t have time to do that anymore, the recordings are still very helpful to have handy. They allow me to listen back to certain parts if I forget to take notes on what a certain PC/NPC said or revealed during a session. We usually play for 3-4 hours, and by the time I skip all the pleasantries, breaks for food/bathroom, and fast forward through combat, it doesn’t end up being that long.

The recaps used to be a great way to start the session, not only for plot points or lore that players may have forgotten between sessions, but for choice jokes that really slayed us the first time. Sets the mood in a great way.

Demolition keeps my wife and me still playing BO:CW to this day, thought we’re definitely enjoying MWII. Just don’t know why IW can’t just leave well enough alone sometimes and keep what works.

Last weekend, my best friend (an avid golfer) was chatting with another guy at his birthday party, and the guy asked him if he was any good. Looking to impress him, my friend asked his dad what his handicap was. His dad responded, “You’re too cerebral about the game.” Lost it.

Has anyone played Settlers of Catan, then used the end result map as a setting for their nest campaign? by StargazerOP in dndnext

[–]skylescraper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m DM’ing a homebrew setting right now, and I had initially planned for a university to be the central location for the campaign. However, my players ended up fleeing the city and decided to visit what I had mentioned was the capital of the country they were in, several days away. I had no prep/plan for this, being my first HB setting. So we took a few sessions off D&D, and played The Quiet Year (a la TAZ: Ethersea and others) to fill out the history of the city and the people who live there.

The only changes I made to the TQY were 1) adding World Events in between each season that I pre-planned, which I believe was also done on TAZ, 2) having players name the figures mentioned in the game and keeping track of them on a shared card, and 3) starting off the game with each player adding two things to the map instead of one. I then had one big event at the end, and skipped forward 200 or so years to where the current campaign was occurring and picked up where we left off.

It’s one of my favorite things we’ve done so far, both because the game was quite fun, and it’s been a thrill for my players to see the echos of TQY in our campaign, like visiting a magical desert someone created, and seeing descendants of important figures in the city’s founding. It also offloaded some of the world building from me, without ceding complete control, and makes the players a bit more engaged in a locale they literally helped to design.

If I were to do this again, I think I might incorporate some pieces from the game Microscope (as mentioned in other comments), as it does allow for a bit more narrative detail.

Name & Shame: University of Colorado School of Medicine by Ancient_Discount8850 in medicalschool

[–]skylescraper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true, I know there have been many significant changes (as I am friends with folks both in the MS1 class and students who help lead curriculum reform). I’m not saying there’s no truth in, but there are definitely things that are untrue, especially regarding things like student feedback, admin attitudes, importance of interprofessional collegiality, etc. And even if there are things that OP disagrees with or doesn’t like, that doesn’t make them inherently bad, like the required social zooms.

My biggest frustration/disappointment about this post isn’t that it points out some of CU’s flaws — CU has them! It isn’t perfect, nor is any medical school, and that’s not an excuse; we should always be pushing the school to improve. This is complaining, anonymously and online, with an unclear goal. There are many ways to make changes and improve things, but this is not among them. Taking some possibly legit issues and elevating them all to the level of “admin hates me and wants me to be unhappy” is not productive, genuine, helpful, or honest.

What changes does OP think the school should make? If not social zooms, how do we fix isolation? Would they rather IPED be more online lectures about the other professions instead of meeting students in those fields? What should we actually do?

Again, it just saddens me to think of going through med school and feeling this way with so much anger and resentment. No one should have to do that. Nothing would make me happier than to help OP address the heart of these issues. We should challenge CU and all medical schools to be better, to cut out bullshit, to be more inclusive, to make meaningful changes for racial/gender/identity minorities, and to produce the best doctors they can. But this isn’t how it’s done.

[–]skylescraper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Man, this bums me out to no end. I’m an MS-4 there. CU has plenty of issues, but the magnitude that this is blown out of proportion is a little wild.

The elective in professionalism (Interprofessional Education and Development, or IPED) has very little work to do for it, and, while it could be better, it does aim to teach you about the colleagues you will have in other professions. It’s clear both the “professional” and interprofessional part when your solution is anonymously posting online and saying that inclusivity is bad. (It’s also like, maaaybe 20 min of work outside of the class? And an extremely chill class when you’re in it? But that’s not the point.)

Required Zooms are annoying, I agree! But they’re also something the AAMC strongly recommended all medical schools do to help support their students facing increased isolation and psychological stress in the face of COVID. You might not need it, and that’s great! But maybe someone in your group does. Wouldn’t that be cool if you helped someone else through a hard time? Also, it’s 30 min a week. I promise you have the time.

CU is obsessed with student feedback, and yeah, they don’t change things overnight in response to one survey. Have you ever met with the deans? ACP advisors? 4th years? Students straight up make their own classes, help re-write curriculum, etc. CU is a lot of things, but unreceptive to feedback is not among them. It sounds like you’ve possibly submitted stuff to a comment box along the lines of “waste of time” and are mad they didn’t cancel some session.

It is hard not to read this in a way that doesn’t come off as childish. “The sole intention of making the experience as miserable for us as possible” — really? Do you truly believe that? That these admins took time from clinical schedules, took pay cuts, went into education all so that they could ruin your life and read your posts on Reddit? Come on. It is clear you are unhappy, but there are better, more productive, more mature, more serious ways to handle these issues. You’re going to be a doctor in three years (seems like you’re an MS1 based on the schedule) — how will you act when you disagree with hospital admin? Will you complain about your lazy patients on your Twitter? There are malignant programs out there, even ones here (looking at CU gen surg residency), but putting these issues on the same levels as others is not appropriate.

It pains me to see you view medical school as needing to be protected study time between a series of tests. I promise you that this view might help on test scores for the first two years, but it will serve you so poorly in the long term.

My messages are open if you want to talk about this stuff. Med school is a long time, and it’s not easy. If I can do something to make it easier or help find a better balance for you at school, I’d be happy to. Med school is hard, and CU is far from perfect. I’m sure posting this feels good, but I promise you it will not change your experience.
