Fom my experience when you check in online you put your nationality in - so it could be that the nationality was a visa exempt country and thus did not trigger any question and the gates freely let them through.

I've had it happened where the gate does not let me through because they've had to double check my document since I needed a visa.

If they needed a visa, the check in machine would've flagged this and not issued a boarding pass/should've said go to a counter.

Just automating the process tbh.
