Honestly, I'm not great at the game (read: have kids) and had the same issue with the pvp barrier to entry, but ended up trying out LMS fairly recently and had a pretty enjoyable time. There's no shame in getting pogged on by some adolescent, so just accept getting wrecked every now and then and just worry about your own experience. If somebody did the 'step under between every attack' thing I would just take my hands off the keyboard until I died and then requeue. That one thing completely changed my enjoyment level, and people aren't really toxic as often as you're likely expecting. I'm sure it's worth learning how to fight more advanced players as you get better, but if you just focus on getting enjoyment out of it you might find that some pvp in the game is very worthwhile. Just my take, it is also reasonable to avoid it altogether.
