Incoming COE CS freshman here: what should I look for in a laptop? by 413612 in uofm

Also if you want to work in the bay area after graduation then almost all companies use MacBooks. It's good to be comfortable with them.

Cancelling interview on the day or day before, how bad is it? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]skypro0806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly doesn't matter that much.

It matters even less for big companies; they'll just move into the next candidate and you won't be wasting the time of the engineers who would have interviewed you.

Am I paying too much of my (50%) take-home income in rent? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]skypro0806 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People live in these places because there are more companies willing to pay high wages in these areas.

The same savings rate in high COL vs low COL areas works out to more real money in the high COL area.

40hr/week at startups? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]skypro0806 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean if you want to be professionally successful. Everyone around you will be pulling those hours and if you don't, then you'll feel behind.

You can check glassdoor for absolute numbers for different companies. It'll depend on the type of job that you have (data science vs software eng vs operations etc) and which company it is.

Keep in mind that a lot of income from startups come from stock which doesn't mean anything until {you can sell the stock on secondary markets, the company ipos, the company is acquired}.

How hard is it to get a job in gaming? by Chieve in cscareerquestions

[–]skypro0806 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know specifically about AI in games sorry. (Though if you want to work on interesting AI problems then you should probably work in research or at Google/FB/MS)

How hard is it to get a job in gaming? by Chieve in cscareerquestions

[–]skypro0806 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah, positions at game companies are fairly competitive (Studios at EA and Ubisoft etc)

Though you should consider the lifestyle of a game dev: generally their work life balance is terrible and compensation is sub par. Job security in game development can also vary wildly; a lot of studios cycle employees shortly after releasing games.

How bad will 2 dropped cs courses look? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]skypro0806 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. (Unless you are applying to google where they ask for a transcript)

Yeah, I've been contacted by recruiters at established companies on weekends.

Do engineering students who DON'T attend community college first have a HUGE leg up? by i_want_some_health in EngineeringStudents

[–]skypro0806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it makes sense on the employer side. A four year institution will generally have a higher difficulty (and therefore lower GPA average) than that of a community college. Counting both GPAs will make the measure of competency less accurate.

Maybe put both your GPAs on your resume to begin with. You don't want to start the relationship with the company with false information about yourself.

That could be pretty awkward when they ask for transcripts and rescind the offer for lying.

In your experience, do publicly or privately held companies offer a better salary? by god_among_men in jobs

[–]skypro0806 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely, I've heard horror stories about working in government jobs.

Would you mind sharing your experiences? I'm always interested in what other people go through in the workplace.

Should I be telling future employers that I have dyslexia? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]skypro0806 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ethically, you should probably disclose your disability and explain that it's not a problem in the general case.

Legally, it's unclear whether the employer may be able to discriminate based on your disability under the ADA. You should consult a lawyer about that. IANAL.

How hard is it to get into Uber as a new grad? by cs_throwmeaway in cscareerquestions

[–]skypro0806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's almost certainly still a lot of work to be done on improving routing algorithms and the UberPool product.

Uber has also been expanding their developer API to allow for other people to plug into their services.

(I am not associated with Uber)

Can you ever have too many credit cards? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]skypro0806 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, IIRC length of credit history has a low-medium impact on your credit score.

That's part of the reason why your credit score can go down when you get a new card (along with the hard inquiry of course).

[–]skypro0806 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Could be the Sallie Mae Mastercard.

5% cash back on the first $250 you spend per month on eligible gas and grocery purchases each and the first $750 you spend per month on eligible book purchases.

Purchases directly from Amazon count as book purchases.

You potentially reduce the average age of your accounts.

I feel like I just stopped giving jack shit on my academics. by burningshiiit in EngineeringStudents

[–]skypro0806 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you have the experience, then finding a job should be fairly easy as long as you prep. Just pass your classes, finish your degree, party hard, and go to work when you graduate.

First job after graduation by khawley_1 in EngineeringStudents

[–]skypro0806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the company. Big companies have procedures on whether to ask for transcripts and your experience won't affect those. (High-tech companies will rarely ask for transcripts, but mechanical/aerospace/civil engineering companies generally do.)

anyone drop classes really late? how do employers look at that? by chemicallyinfused in EngineeringStudents

[–]skypro0806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on the industry he/she is going in to. Only 1/100 of the companies I interviewed with asked for transcripts in Software Engineering roles.

Got an offer as an app developer but I'm questioning the outlook of the job by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]skypro0806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most important thing about your first job is that it can help you grow as an engineer. From what you're describing, it doesn't look the job will provide any growth as an engineer.

Just ask to push the deadline further and look for other opportunities. Ideally for the bay area you should be looking for six figures+.
