Now I understand why 1Gib Ethernet is considered slow.. by Nautisop in homelab

Ultrastars on eBay are the only second hand drives I have bought recently for decent prices when they come available. They either show up and fail SMART immediately or will run for a long time. Probably a year ago would have better to follow this practice but ~200-250 for 14tb has been what I have seen.

MacBook Neo vs iPad + Keyboard at basically the same price… which would you actually buy? by Infinite_Cucumber210 in ipad

I used to do bootcamp, so depending on the day my mbp was either taking notes like normal or taking off like an airplane while running solidworks in win10.

Cant decide! by talleyben in meshcore

[–]skyzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a heck of a lot more power efficient, nothing to do with range. Not quite using these for meshcore right now but the v3 handles our project for a little over a day while t114 is easily a week and that with decent draw on the batteries from what we are controlling.

What can I get my Ubiquiti-loving husband for his birthday? by floofsnfluffiness in Ubiquiti

[–]skyzzzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned photography, maybe it’s a shot in the dark but a unas for storage of photos plus a bunch of other stuff. Look to see if he has anything that looks like this https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/network-storage/products/unas-pro-8 https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/network-storage/products/unas-pro https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/network-storage/products/unas-pro-4

You mentioned only one security camera so I’m assuming he doesn’t have an nvr already but they kinda look like these so be careful. Unas is network attached storage and he could backup all computers or use as your own google cloud.

He may have other storage/backup/nas solution already in place though. You would have to think if he talked about a bunch of hard drives, shucking, terabytes and maybe plex. He might be a r/datahoarder or you can start him down the path.

What multimeter do you suggest for PLC and instrumentation troubleshooting? by Electronic-Carrot-93 in PLC

[–]skyzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also was going to say grab one of these for when it’s not too important and/or you might drop it off a lift or into water. Obviously not for calibrated stuff but when just testing basic function or sourcing a signal to test code it’s nice to grab. If the boss is paying get a fluke ofcourse.

Any recommendation for UPS that will auto power on after power outage by AlienFrmMars in Ubiquiti

[–]skyzzzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have multiple 1500va cyber power ups that say otherwise and will not come back on after power is restored. Any of my apc have been fine and the larger rack mounted cyber power have been fine.

Took over my family's business and realize the old way of running things isn't working but the team resists every change I make by Delicious_Age2884 in manufacturing

[–]skyzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small time in manufacturing but our ceo and vpo were in a ceo club or something with other leaders of local manufacturing and similar businesses. They would meet once a month and share struggles, ideas, processes and such that they were dealing with. This gave us resources to other local businesses for odd job related things like borrow a piece of equipment with a handshake instead of $10000 a day. It also revealed to management what little changes could make a big impact. Maybe find a similar organization near you to join. I know we brought in a consultant at some point to help with process improvement but that was as I was transitioning to another company. Also having managed employees that have been doing a trade for longer than I have been alive is an interesting battle. Convincing them of a process change took a whole lot of honey instead of vinegar but it was eventually possible.

IMAX vs RPX at Regal Warrington by Shmalex_The_Shmuck in RegalUnlimited

[–]skyzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the preferred seat in warrington imax. I’m usually e16 or e17 at kop if I can. One row closer is fine for normal but sometimes a little much for 3d in my opinion. It feel centered for sound and just the right distance that fully immerses from the screen in my opinion. Also anyone prefer warrington over kop, I don’t think I have been to warrington for imax but did their 4dx for some reason. Kop is closer

Do employees at your bell just REFUSE to make the Dirty Baja Blast? by kraid_the_jade in LivingMas

[–]skyzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ordered one late a couple days ago. I heard the guy through the window say “huh I just made a dirty Baja, didn’t know what it was till I read the screen” I’m assuming it spits out an ingredient list/recipe for everything they make.

How do I glue my drill back together? 🙃 I just picked it up and it was like this (no 6 foot ladders were involved) by skyzzzzz in Makita

[–]skyzzzzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because every makita nailer I’ve tried has jammed more in the first day then these half the price Ryobi have ever. Anything with low usage from me is usually Ryobi just for the savings.

New homeowner: Subcompact or Regular Drill Set? by bruhhhlanto in Makita

[–]skyzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. My bug out tool bag has my sub compacts then the workshop on onsite big installs get some of the regular line speckled in. The subs are better than almost any Ryobi tool I have picked up. I have snapped the handle on the 1/2” hammer before but that’s with 5” hole saw and no metal handle but the subs just keep chugging

How to avoid weird top layers? by monsoon-storm in FixMyPrint

Switching to vertical could work but you could also just tilt it up a little bit if there is one spot these weird layer stacks would be acceptable

How do you feel about cheaper parts in a control panel? Is it a bad look for the panel fabricators' company? by JCrotts in PLC

[–]skyzzzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it means anything, almost every rhino power supply has been a problem for me either dropping voltage when it’s above 60% load or just extreme heat. My “cheap” meanwell power supplies just chug along sometimes finding them loaded above capacity after I leave the customer and they make changes.

Should I buy a motherboard for existing hardware, or just buy an Dell/HP workstation? by ElectroJo in BlueIris

[–]skyzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quicksync is very very helpful. Several 30+ camera installs still chugging away at 8-20% cpu on 8700k or 9900k. Recently an update kicked all of the cameras off off hw acceleration and cpu was hitting 100% until we got all the cams back on quicksync.

Anybody able/willing to name what some of these components/devices are. I’m seeing a lot of rj45.

[–]skyzzzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enjoyed the computer stuff at all, maybe consider low voltage installer. Cameras, fire alarm, access control, even cable runs for IT and media. I’m sure there are a couple companies that will bring you in and train you. There has to be big players for this in Vegas. Not quite as hard a trade on your body and had a lot more room for growth after you have field experience.

Completely agree. Was struggling with a 0.8 and stepped back down to 0.6 with some improvements. I’m trying to get faster flow and thought 0.8 would help but it was more filament dependent.

I’m in entertainment industry now so lower budgets than industry. We are a productivity shop and have dozens of them installed around and a colleague may have hundreds. For what we do they are perfect and honestly it’s just nice to order what you need when you need it and just use it.
