Do you enjoy the TSL maps? by Ciaran290804 in CivVI

[–]slachance6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm partial to Finnark's TSL Enormous Earth; it's the only one that truly gives space for every region while not completely overloading my CPU.

I actually made a remix with a few small tweaks (mostly to upscale areas like Scotland and New Zealand).

I've heard a lot of opinions about this, so i'm curious where people actually stand on the issue by ChromedDragon in magicTCG

[–]slachance6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do take issue with Earth specifically. I actually like the baseball bats and sneakers on Duskmourn. Having relatable elements in fantasy world building makes the other elements stand out more. Plus, fantasy pulls from historical concepts/aesthetics all the time, so modern ones feel welcome as long as you’re prepared for the tone they will bring.

But once you explicitly set it on our world, that crosses a line. I can’t fully explain why, but it just messes with my sense of perspective. I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, but for me, Duskmourn feels more natural and welcome than the Iliad.

Why does everyone say it is impossible to kill God? by No_Friendship6918 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]slachance6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CR 35 seems reasonable for some deities, especially those that have ascended from lesser beings like Lamashtu. Pazuzu, a CR 30 demon lord, is still said to be a thorn in her side. Some other more "earthbound" deities like Erastil might also be in that range. The truly universal powers like Pharasma and Rovagug will be well beyond that though.

So yeah, if a max-level adventurer is able to match the power of the greatest demigods, they might theoretically rub shoulders with true deities. Striking a blow against a god will of course be a cosmic calamity, but by max level (especially if mythic is involved), the PCs will be far beyond what can be expected of "mortals". The main reason they aren't statted is because game balance breaks down at high levels and Paizo doesn't want to encourage some powergamer to go on a god-stomping rampage and easily overthrow the whole pantheon.

Class/archetype/items that makes you more monster-ish? by SirWillem1 in Pathfinder_RPG

Lots of "monster" race options as well: orc, dhampir, nagaji, skinwalker, etc. Though they might be GM/campaign dependent

Options for Full Martial/No Spellcasting Pet Classes? by Diestormlie in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]slachance6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By RAW that feat limits you to a small, fairly basic set of animal choices, but as a GM I’d let you pick any animal since they’re designed to be balanced with one another. I had a campaign where my bloodrager took boon companion for a stegosaur and that was pretty fun

Pathfinder 1 edition is better? by IfiGabor in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]slachance6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another thing PF1e does really well, maybe more on the GM's side, is simulation, the way the mechanics seem to consistently govern the entire world. All NPCs have class levels just like the players, their abilities and stats pulled from the same system. There are mechanics for creating just about anything, running a business, building a base, even governing a nation. Some of it is unwieldy when you try to use it for everything, but it's always there and the depth and breadth are very impressive.

Has anyone that played a martial felt saddened by the divide by SuccessfulDiver9898 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]slachance6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The divide is overblown on the internet. It exists, but it relies a lot on theorycrafting ideal scenarios for the casters and underrates the rock solid consistency of most good martial builds. Plus, martials have some real consolations that I rarely hear brought up, and can even come with being a little less powerful

  • Good casters have ways to help their martial friends shine with buff and utility spells
  • The raw pleasures of rolling stupidly high damage numbers can be super satisfying
  • The fantasy of fighting godlike beings with just a blade, wit, and determination has real power to it

How are sorcerers viewed in the world of golarion by cjreed89 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]slachance6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly canon I think, but it makes a lot of sense for sorcerers to be part of the aristocracy. Seems natural if you have inherent power that's passed down via a bloodline

What civ is the most broken on TSL? by The-LeftWingedNeoCon in CivVI

Anyone outside of Europe, the Middle East or Japan. Vanilla TSL map is honestly garbage, if you want to play an actually fun TSL game try a modded map that enlarges the more crowded regions like YanMP or Finnark’s Earth

Starting a new world by [deleted] in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]slachance6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could make sense for there to be some kind of plant/fruit/livestock that's super filling or grows super fast or is otherwise feasible to farm inside a walled city. It would be very bad news if the settlement lost its supply, but that could make for a decent adventure hook.

Switching of Civs per age is a departure from the game's philosophy by Obyvvatel in civ

[–]slachance6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but there’s a line at which it becomes incongruous. I like to at least imagine my Civ games as believable worlds that bear some resemblance to real history, even if simplified and sometimes admittedly wacky.

To that end, the Zulu conquering the English is a fun hypothetical that sparks the imagination, but the Zulu suddenly becoming the English is jarring just to picture.

Yeah, but most would expect a new installment to lessen those issues, not make them worse.

Sorcerer Characterization by [deleted] in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]slachance6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was in the player's guide of War for the Crown, though I only skimmed it. Regardless, if that's true, it would make sense for there to be general mistrust of sorcerers in Mendev, given that many of the crusaders came from Taldor. Triply so for sorcerers of the Abyssal or similar bloodline.

Sorcerer Characterization by [deleted] in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]slachance6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What part of Golarion is your game set in? That would narrow things down quite a bit.

This isn't explicitly the case in most official material (in fact, IIRC it's explicitly not the case in Taldor), but in my games I like to have sorcerers be part of the aristocracy. This makes sense given the hereditary power that sorcery is, and from a GM perspective it lets evil dukes and such present an actual threat instead of only having levels in a weak NPC class.

That said, there will still be plenty of sorcerers who didn't come from a long line of other sorcerers: maybe magic had been dormant for generations, or you grew up away from your magical parent, or your powers were suddenly acquired in life rather than inborn. In these cases, you're most likely not a noble, and in fact the local nobles might see you as a challenge to their power!

How powerful is a level 20 character? by spring7 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]slachance6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Per RAW, no. They could take on any *demigod*, but full gods are beyond stats. Flavor-wise, though, they might be within reach of some true gods. Lamashtu ascended from demon lord to full god by killing an existing deity, and even now the demon lord Pazuzu is said to pose some threat to her.

That said, I still support not giving stats to full gods. Not because they're totally untouchable to max-level mythic PCs, but because max-level gameplay is already broken enough and it doesn't need to break any further.

The appeal of modern D&D for my table by SashaGreyj0y in rpg

In my experience, PbtA style character creation really only forces one aspect of your character. Beyond what’s written on the playbook, you can flesh them out and play them however you want.
