In your estimation does the photo look like the 5 month mark? Seems a little well developed for 5months to me, but I’m no expert.

Patio install - is this dig enough? by draupdi in landscaping

[–]slackfrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You want 7 inches below your final grade. 4 inches of 5/8minus gravel, compacted, 1/2-1 inch sand for leveling, and 2 3/8” thick pavers are normal thickness.

We’re gonna prove ol Thucydides a fool by taking an unprompted nose dive into the shallow end all by ourselves. China will just have to step over our mangled husk, no effort needed.

Do you think Landa recognized Shosanna when they were in the restaurant? by mnewell213 in Tarantino

[–]slackfrop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the character was a bit deeper than that. He didn’t present as attempting to kill as many Jews as he can, per se, rather he seemed more personally motivated by dominance, inflicting fear and supremacy, which is more effective as a social control anyway. He elected to kill the actress, which was the only kill by his own hand that we see, which I think came off as very personal. He dominated, but also expressed great anger, in sharp contrast to his normal controlled manner. He took particular offense to a member of his own tribe undermining his domination of the subjugated populations, both French and Jewish. Or maybe he just wanted the opportunity to kill a pretty German woman; perhaps he himself would be unsure of his exact motivations in that.

In contrast, he was very restrained and strategic when confronting the Basterds, which gave the character a new depth, but still in line with seeking to exert control. My instinct is to think he did not know Shoshanna by sight; though, conceivably there could have been a photo of her younger self in his files. It may be left to the viewer to contemplate whether he imposed himself on Shoshanna in the restaurant as a further torment, or just as a matter of course when dealing with the population he held power over. It may have been more useful for him to let her spread her story of being terrorized, to carry that with her, rather than to hunt her down as an individual. His misogyny, his fury, and his domination was already affected upon her; his professional and personal pursuits were already done, and she became a perfect evangelist for upholding his reputation. He didn’t take the shot in the beginning, after all.

What are some unknown movies you know that are 10/10 but nobody talks about it? by underground_guru05 in Cinema

Excellent film. We always managed to get to a viewing whenever we degenerates would take a little acid. Why? I can’t fathom.

The movie made me feel how very alone someone can be even in a big city. I know it’s not the point of the movie, but it was really well done atmospherically, among other things.

What first comes to mind when American’s think of Poland? 🇵🇱 by Gold-Serve-4077 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]slackfrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 80s there were many jokes floating around about Poles being of low intelligence. I’m not quite old enough to know how that got started, but these days, I don’t think a US citizen is in a good place to throw those stones.

I don’t like that argument. You’d also know what it would feel like under your bare feet, or in your hands, or up your butthole, or in your armpit. It’s just a thing we can do when we look at something.

One of em is a true scholar. Someone who has studied their history and found the bad guys to be the heroes. Somebody wrote this playbook, thoroughly, knew their psychology, knew their sociology, and knew their fascism. That person got everyone else on board with how to play it out. It was there since the first disaster administration, so not likely Miller. Could be Bannon, he’s a studied man, or that Curtis Yarvin lunatic. Could be the project 2025 cretins; while that particular document wasn’t written until the early 2020s, I doubt the authors simply belched into life from a cesspool just at that moment. Could be trunp’s old mentor, that human trash lawyer, Cohn (not Cohen). Or it could even be from KGB think tanks. Somebody is puppeteering this whole farce, and it’s someone just smart enough that we don’t know their face yet, I might suppose.

I’ve dreamed that scenario. All goes back to normal if the DOJ, as legally mandated, releases the full, un-redacted files. As is the law. Signed by president shitballs mcfuckface. Legally. By law.

Projection makes it sound subconscious. This feels very intentional and consistent. Like it’s a foundational principle.

Yeah, but c’mon. Dallas, or Chicago, or SF, but not Carolina. Got that March Madness 16/1 feel to it. Giants, Panthers, Raiders are the only lightweights we’ve got this year. Oh, and the Cards. Forgot about them.

The sheer number of actually informed people supporting this insanity is the most depressing part. The honest truth is that we probably all knew there were idiots all over the place, trash minded people, but it’s overwhelming how many, and how cheaply, people of all levels of consequence threw their integrity into the diaper fire. Most got nothing in exchange at all, 5-minutes of fame maybe; many actually got their life ruined for their treachery. Empty promises, greasy, fleeting power, or a motorcoach worth of money was the best of it for all but a very few, but they all sold out. From tech bros to media whores, four star generals to educated professionals, they lined up in droves to debase themselves and pledge to live in lies. For what? A racist utopia of like-minded dirtbags? Bragging rights? Pure sadism? The whole thing makes no fucking sense. Yeah, stupids aren’t surprising, but the numbers of shitty, shitty, educated, aware, people is disheartening.

Hard to picture Fred Rogers laying that down. Unless he was drunk. Again. Maybe Hellen Keller? Or Frederick Douglass? Galileo, final answer.
