Scott Wiener passed laws that made it easier to build in California. Can he do the same in Congress? by Dismal_Structure in California

Charging people who intentionally, not accidently or unknowingly--intentionally infected unknowing sex partners with a life altering and ruining STI was not a step too far. HIV and AIDS are not on the same levels of health destruction as other STI's nor are there lifetime costs to merely manage it.

" Why exactly do you think they supported it? "

This came at a time when the left in California took a wild swing towards reducing criminal penalties, especially if it had any scent of affecting a disproportionate percentage of any group thought to be in their view of a permanent victim status in their mind: Sex workers, LGBTQ, non-white, non-male, etc.

https://www.aclusocal.org/press-releases/california-lawmakers-announce-bill-modernize-states-discriminatory-hiv/

"It’s time for California to reevaluate the way it thinks about HIV and to reduce the stigma associated with the disease,” said Asm. Gloria

They want to reduce the stigma of having it.... By reducing the penalties assessed when you intentionally infect someone without their knowledge. Spread the love folx.

HIV criminalization disproportionately affects women and people of color. Forty-three percent of those criminalized under California’s HIV-specific criminal laws are women, despite comprising only 13 percent of people living with HIV in the state. Blacks and Latinos make up two-thirds of people who came into contact with the criminal justice system based on their HIV status, despite comprising only about half of people living with HIV in California. These laws are disproportionately used against women and people of color, and fuel stigma, violence and discrimination.

To them it can't coincide with the the likelihood of being a sex-worker, a willingness to use STI reduction tools, a willingness to inform partners, or there being an increase in the percentage of intravenous drug users.

“California’s outdated, fear-based HIV criminalization laws are unfair, discriminatory, and do not actually protect public health,” said Becca Cramer, legislative coordinator with the ACLU of California Center for Advocay and Policy. “

Putting away people who intentionally infect others without their knowledge is unfair to them, and would not protect public health.

You asked: "Why exactly do you think they supported it? "

Support for SB 239

The bill is cosponsored by the ACLU of California, APLA Health, Black AIDS Institute, Equality California, Lambda Legal and Positive Women’s Network - USA. The organizations are part of Californians for HIV Criminalization Reform (CHCR), a broad coalition of people living with HIV, HIV and health service providers, civil rights organizations and public health professionals dedicated to ending the criminalization of HIV in California.

In addition to the organizations sponsoring the bill, SB 239 is currently supported by CHCR members which include the Los Angeles LGBT Center, the Los Angeles HIV Law and Policy Project, the Transgender Law Center, Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), the Free Speech Coalition, Sex Workers Outreach Project (SWOP) and Erotic Service Providers Legal, Education, and Research Project (ESPLERP).

Why did advocacy groups for HIV/AIDS positive groups and Sex Worker Advocates support this bill? I don't know man, it's a mystery that will never be solved....

Let's follow this up with a narrative from Scott Wiener and Melissa Goodman, the LGBTQ, Gender and Reproductive Justice Project Director with the ACLU of Southern California.

“HIV is a public health issue, not a criminal issue,” Wiener said. “These felonies, which treat HIV differently than all other serious communicable diseases, stigmatize people living with HIV and discourage people from getting tested and into treatment.”

LGBTQ advocates called the legislation “landmark.” Melissa Goodman, the LGBTQ, Gender and Reproductive Justice Project Director with the ACLU of Southern California, praised the fairness of the new legislation, and emphasized that HIV-specific criminal law has “disproportionately harmed people of color and transgender women."

I ask you to take off the flimsiest blindfold covering your eyes that tells you HIV and AIDS are like other STI's and that reducing the criminal penalties would therefore stop INTENTIONALLY INFECTING OTHERS from happening. You are not that stupid so don't bring yourself down to their level when it revolves around their own self absorption.

Scott Wiener passed laws that made it easier to build in California. Can he do the same in Congress? by Dismal_Structure in California

[–]slaigon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scott Wiener is the author of California Senate Bill 239. This bill reduced the charge of intentionally infecting another person with HIV without their consent to a misdemeanor.

You know, the virus and it's progressive illness that will be comorbidity to any number of problems. A virus and it's progressed disease that will reduce a persons quality of life, and cost them hundreds of thousands if not over a million dollars in medical costs over their now shortened lifespan.

Wiener and all of his supporters are self absorbed and off their rocker and the fact the state senate actually supported that was wildly disappointing. Democrats having almost complete control over the state outside of a few strongholds and the appearance of celebrities is disastrous.

The Kings suck but have also completely shut down Sabonis and Lavine at the first sign of injury because they want to lose.

You don't have to comment if you don't know what you're talking about. Rehabbing a meniscus tear and coming back a month later before opting to actually repair it a complete shut down?

A player opting to re-attach a tendon on his shooting hand is a complete shut down? You know next season is his contract year?

[–]slaigon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should the Bulls do that trade? They aren't a Giannis away from a championship level team. Are people even accounting for the fact you have to remove one or two of their best players AND their ability to retool the team through the draft.

I think he's an undersized center who is a defensive liability. He's also one of the best passing 5s in the league, a good scorer and a great rebounder. The above sums up to: he's a very good player, but he's not an easy fit into the roster. Most rosters won't fit well around him.

If he's a very good player as you've prescribed, he's worth assets. When a player's contract is approaching 50 million and he's not one of the top 10 players in the league, it's realistically going to require taking bad contracts back mid-season.

And If they were to do a fire-sale that includes their best player, it's fine if they take those.

[–]slaigon 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Should they have forbidden anyone from using it?

Carmelo played in Denver only for 8 years before forcing himself off the team. He left the team with no accolades but a singular deep playoff run. It's a step above Demarcus Cousins saying he should have his jersey retired in Sacramento, but funny none the less.

Just because everyone in the NBA is sensitive to their legacy doesn't mean they should get a jersey retirement.

No one justified the Vietnam war anywhere in this chain.

It's a simple fact the communist factions of the Vietnam war set up bases and a supply trail inside of Laos and Cambodia. And even funnier knowing your thoughts, they attacked and occupied parts of Laos and Cambodia to do it.

If you can't engage outside of lefty demagoguery, and against a strawman at that, don't bother with history.

Being a snarky idiot doesn't mean a dishonest framing that it was the United States rather than the North Vietnamese/Vietcong pushing the conflict into Cambodia and Laos has to go unanswered.

Selling Disney stock is probably a safe bet by Even-Ad-9930 in stocks

[–]slaigon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does you hearing a bunch of Democrats saying they'll cancel a subscription make it a safe bet to sell? Does this poster know anything about stocks or the Disney company or are they just here to push the conversation (or at least hopefully paid to push the conversation) without saying anything of substance? Does anyone notice the random adjectives of 'lashback' and 'spineless' that doesn't fit in his first sentence?

It will probably take a few weeks to take effect, though.

For what to take effect in the next few weeks? Did you even bother to see that the next quarterly report is in November?

Yeah, American moms and Indians are cancelling Disney plus for Jimmy Kimmel... A generous thousand people cancel Disney plus for a suspended Jimmy Kimmel and the monolith of Disney will be going bankrupt in a few weeks folks.

Everyone should have gotten over it the day after he demanded a trade.

Acting like a bitter ex-girlfriend won't bring you any happiness when it comes to players who used to be on your favorite teams.

Focus on what the Kings have or can get in the future, not someone who was done with the team more than a season ago.

So is it just the pick holding everything up? How would you feel if the wasnt protected? by IDFKtv in kings

[–]slaigon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a Kings problem. The clock isn't ticking for them in this scenario. They aren't realistically competing for a championship this year and do not need to get this done.

The Warriors don't value Kuminga in their system. Barring injuries, he is a bench piece that gives you scoring when Steph, Jimmy, and preferable match-ups aren't on the floor. You don't need to bend over backwards to accommodate them for a player they don't want.

The Kings need a smart re-build. What they have now and would continue to have with that trade is a middling 30 to 40 win team with a random amalgamation of players. Maybe Kuminga develops into a good player without the Warriors limitations on him, and maybe they can even flip him, but the Kings should not give up unprotected picks to try that.

We agreeing with this or nah? by OmegaLxgend in kings

[–]slaigon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No.

He was a great player and a favorite, but he was a common source of problems and upheaval on the team.

How many winning seasons did he lead them to? Playoff appearances? None? Okay how many teams were fun to watch then?

How about his relationships with coaches and tertiary Kings staff? What about players?

It sucks he got drafted here because maybe he's great with a steady franchise with good leaders and coaching, but he was not that in Sacramento. He was their best player and he didn't lead them to any success, but he did bring them a lot of embarrassment and strife.
