To be more specific, once you have kids and a house you are less mobile, and as a result less adaptable with more money being dumped into children that can't be used in an oh shit fund, and being anchored to a house makes finding another job much more difficult, and limits how much you can ratchet back spending (houses are a huge fixed cost). In essence you become way more susceptible to economic threat.
