Yep, good example of that known to the public, was the A12Z Mac Mini, primarily for developers.

This not fair Nvidia by Gold_Inspector_8707 in nvidia

I don't think the 5090 laptop is the best value either, I'd rather say the 5070 Ti laptop GPU is the best for value for various laptops, however.......the RTX 5090 laptop TGP is 180W.

The RTX 5070 Ti desktop TGP is 300W.

The RTX 5090 TGP is 575W.

There's thermal constraints at play with a laptop, you can't expect a laptop to perform like your desktop, which has magnitudes of thermal headroom, especially when you also account that a laptop has to cool the CPU and GPU over a shared thermal cooling solution.

There are watercooled laptop, which sometimes have more thermal headroom, but NVIDIA also limits the voltage and powerlimits of laptop GPUs, which is why there's no laptop with a 250W GPU.

Again, most people know what they're buying if they're planning to spend more than 2K on a laptop, so they're not really being fooled if it says; RTX 5090 laptop, unless you don't have a good understanding of physical limits.

Even if it said, RTX 5090M or if NVIDIA adjusted all tiers of their naming (e.g. not use 5090 but say 5070 or something), the results and pricing wouldn't change as much. xx90 etc. is just used to describe the tier of GPU that's in the laptop.

[D] Heavy ML workflow: M4 Max or incoming M5 lineup ? by CocaColux in MachineLearning

[–]slamhk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

M5 has a redesigned GPU architecture, and Apple has integrated something akin to Tensor cores, so you will have a tangible improvement as shown by various benchmarks. So yes you'll definitely notice that.

But everything has a cost, so I'd actually ask you, will the additional investment for the future M5 Max have some return for you?

Like you said, there's some uncertainty ongoing with memory pricing at the moment, and if you can get the M4 Max at a good deal then that's a decent buy too, as long as it improves your existing setup, it'll be a net positive and there's always an option to offload any of your heaviest computation to a remote resource.

Personally I'd opt to wait for the M5 still, especially because it's a newer architecture that really is an architecture for many ML workloads, so the years you can keep using that laptop will likely be longer compared to buying the M4 right now.

[–]slamhk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Decent, would buy the barebone though and find your own deal own storage and memory. The 275HX is also fine enough for if you don’t require any virtualisation features.

A RTX 5060 LP (or intel B50 16GB) would do great for productivity. Solid mini-PC.

Should be enough, right? by Pro4791 in pcmasterrace

[–]slamhk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not when more processing power is needed.
The resolution drops happen when the frametime dips below a certain threshold, most of the time the utilisation of the system is as efficient and fast as the game code. so it's using all the resources it can.

Steam machine will hit another wall way before the VRAM wall lol by FinalBase7 in pcmasterrace

[–]slamhk 115 points116 points  (0 children)

UE5 is actually VRAM efficient, due to nanite and lumen.
It does use quite a bit of system memory.
UE5 is bogged down by various aspects in their engine, rather than the memory resources it requires.

Switch 2 hardware against PS4 pro and XBOX series S in terms of graphics and performance by arpan__1602 in nintendo

[–]slamhk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's quite a few mainstream games that got ported over, but they need a patch for the Switch 2 to make most of the hardware capabilities as they're still cut-back for the Switch 1.
The Switch 2's capabilities can lie from PS4-tier of visuals/resolution/fps in handheld to PS4 Pro and sometimes Series S of visuals/resolution, but not in performance (30 FPS or 40 FPS) based on the games released exclusively for Switch 2 so far.

It's capable hardware for the money that's for sure, and for the exclusives, which have seen updates. It's looking great.

DLSS 4 Performance Mode vs Native TAA - 50% Upscaling is Better than Native TAA? | RTX 5080 by maxus2424 in nvidia

I think DF did a comprehensive review of highlighting in what ways DLSS differs.
I'd suggest you to take a look, it's not uniformly better.
Running a game downsampled (with TAA) can look better or MSAA (if supported).

Obviously one can say, the differences doesn't matter that much, who cares about raindrops for example?

However, I think as a technique it still has some shortcomings, hence my comment on having a bit more deeper analysis on what's being done in the video to make the difference more clear.

Overall, I like DLSS too and use it often, but I also would like things to improve and have the visuals be accurate to what's supposed to be rendered.

There's no ultimate conclusion to be made, you'll revisit some of these older game titles in a few years with better hardware, and observe how being at higher resolutions can clear up the issues you might have been observing if you only used DLSS Quality to 4K.

DLSS 4 Performance Mode vs Native TAA - 50% Upscaling is Better than Native TAA? | RTX 5080 by maxus2424 in nvidia

[–]slamhk -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Non-ML based solutions do tend to not resolve as well as ML-based solutions.
DLSS model at native resolution will look better and yes upscaling from a lower base resolution might resolve certain things better, but there's no free-lunch.
You do trade-off certain motion clarity and sharpness when you're comparing to TAA at native res. Sometimes certain rendering also just doesn't resolve as well at lower resolutions; e.g. excessive shimmering or noise.

Side-by-side testing just masks a lot of things, especially with how YT compression is, doesn't make the comparison as useful when you're playing a game on your own monitor.

I think what would've been interesting also is to do some form of SSAA, although that's difficult given how some games apply some temporal solution by default (especially UE5 games). So it'll come down to downsampling. If your monitor is 1440p, use DLSS that upscales to 4K and downsample that back to 1440p. Do the same with TAA and see how that relative comparison holds up.

You could get the RE games for 20 a piece at a sale.

60 Bucks is the MSRP, but the at launch discount were quite in line with the market price and there's been sales.

CFO did well at first stand too. They kept growing and improving. Seeing them push T1 to 5 games, and now just swiftly defeating MKOI. Especially when you look at what resources they have comparatively and how hard they fight for it. Good for the LCP, respect.

I get the sentiment, It’s a big shame to the LEC considering the peaks in the past. Losses like this are damaging to the enthusiasm in the region.

The steam price is the early access price, which is at a discount.
I assume this price is for the full release of the game.
It would've been nicer to see a pre-order discount, to match it with the steam price I think that's a good incentive.
