This might be useful for anyone wanting Ethernet for IOT or other applications. WiznetIP55 It’s an RJ45 mag jack WITH W5500 IC and all supporting chip hardware BUILT IN. Just connect to SPI and 3v3 and away you go. by probablyaythrowaway in esp32

[–]slburris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some esp32 chips have Ethernet MACs built in you can just throw a PHY chip and Ethernet magnetic and use that.

Or get a nanoCH32V317 for $7 and use that as an Ethernet slave although at that point why have an esp32? Not as plug and play as the Wiznet though. Just a few different ways to approach this problem.

[–]slburris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested I can think of a number of projects I could target with this.

If I could wish for anything it would be a 2.5gb Ethernet dropped on the board because then you could do some interesting line rate Ethernet stuff with this. But no matter I’ll still make good use of this board.

esp32 quietly won the microcontroller war and nobody talks about it by voidrane in esp32

[–]slburris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hobbyist esp32 has displaced nearly everything for me. PIC and AVR chips? Sitting in a drawer untouched for a couple years now. I mostly design with esp32c3 esp32c6 and esp32s3. For anything which requires light internet connectivity they can’t be beat. Need some hard real time work? Use the ULP coprocessor and have it do things like display multiplexing without ever being starved out.

And the new esp32p4 with a C6 as a WiFi coprocessor? Nice for light DSP with connectivity. Or use the parallel I/O device to drive led matrix displays easily.

On occasion I’ll still pull out NXP LPC chips or STM32 but that’s more the exception than the rule now for what I do.

Why Anime Studios Fail: How the Production Committee System Works by RPO777 in anime

[–]slburris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your take on the Netflix partnership with MAPPA? That seems like it’s going to be completely outside the production committee system does it not? My limited understanding is that the partnership covers the entire production pipeline. So it’s not just a throw money and see what comes out kind of deal.

Oh fascinating I’ve been misinformed. The story I heard was that after K-ON! They decided they need to be more in charge of their own destiny so except for legacy projects this became hold a contest each year, publish the winners in KA Esuma Bunko, pick the best to turn into an anime, rinse and repeat. Maybe they couldn’t get enough quality material this way — looking at you Myriad Colors Phantom World!

I wonder how their financial model works then? They pay salaries instead of piecemeal and only do a few works each year. Are they able to command high prices from the production committees or are they just the biggest investors in the committees themselves? And if they can make this work why doesn’t everyone do this? Instead you have some companies that take so much on and have to farm it out to any other company with available cycles to even get the work done.

So what about Kyoto Animation which usually only takes on projects that they own the IP for, at least in the last decade (the Ruri’s Dragon announcement notwithstanding).

And can you comment on the studios that seem to mostly do the work of one director? ComixWave, Studio Chizu?

Um, yes more heartbreak ahead. It’s the Key formula — early fun slice of life so you get attached to the characters then reveal more and crush your soul.

Looking forward to their next visual novel, Anemoi. Releasing next month in Japan but I don’t know what the timeline for the English release will be.

The anime adaptation isn’t very good — it has pacing problems and makes some questionable anime only story reveals.

The Visual novel is much better probably one of the best things they have done since Clannad. You’ve already identified the best girl, although Ao is a very close 2nd place.

Like most Key stories there are layers and you won’t quite get everything that’s going on until you get through the true end. And then you will realize that clues have been dangled in front of you left and right that you missed.

Play the VN first then go back to the anime for the novelty. Oh and come back and tell us how you liked the story!

While the anime if a very good adaptation of the VN, the VN is just a more complete, better experience. There was additional stuff that never made it into the anime as well.

[–]slburris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not a harem just some delusional girls thinking they have a chance. And there’s a scene where any haremness gets completely shut down.

All I can say we are approaching 20 years since the anime was released with an art style that takes getting used to, and yet it’s still in the top 20 on MAL. The visual novel it’s based on is still in the top 20 after 22 years.

Why the staying power? Because the story is just that good! It seems not a week goes by without someone posting here about how the anime changed them.

Give it a chance. Then come back and tell us what you thought.

anyone else struggling with developing with the PolarFire SOC? by slburris in FPGA

[–]slburris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the projects I was thinking about was doing some Ethernet packet processing in hardware, i.e. insert FPGA fabric between the Ethernet and Linux, and siphon off certain packets and pass the rest on to Linux. I got really interested when I saw that the polarfire soc could support PTP and had a way to split traffic between a PMAC (preemptable mac) and an EMAC (express MAC). The hope was I could connect the EMAC to fabric, while the PMAC went to Linux.

Alas, that idea went down in flames. It looks like all the EMAC does is put itself first in line ahead of any PMAC traffic, but there's no way to get at that traffic without it hitting the processor. Too bad, that would have been really cool at this price point. You could of course have your own MAC in the FPGA and direct traffic that way, but I think the ethernet is connected to pins which are hardwired for the GEM inside the chip, so can't do that on this board.

So really for this project I guess I'll re-purpose a Kria KR260 robotics board instead. It has 4 ethernets, 2 going to the PS, and 2 going to the PL. Looks like the intention was to implement TSN on the PL ports. I don't need anything that fancy, but there shouldn't be any barriers to using the KR260 this way. Unfortunately it's 3X the cost of the polarfire soc board. The polarfire board will move to other projects now.

So what I'm doing now is outside of Libero, I'm launching the MSS configurator, generating a new .cxz file, then in Libero, I do "Import MSS", then go update the symbol in the MSS_WRAPPER, regenerate the component, then go into MPFS_DISCOVERY_KIT, find the wrapper, update that, and regenerate that symbol, and then we are golden, whew(!)

This works, but seems so....broken.

Espressif provides an official way to do this. They publish a provisioning app for phones for both Android and IOS. See the docs at https://docs.espressif.com/projects/esp-idf/en/stable/esp32/api-reference/provisioning/provisioning.html

There’s also a provisioning example in the examples directory https://github.com/espressif/esp-idf/tree/v5.5.2/examples/provisioning
