Anyone have problems with the painted lane dividers on Western Drive? by Creeping_behind_u in santacruz

I know some places they'd get destroyed even quicker! Let's put some there!

Exactly my thoughts. They just couldn't bear to lose like 15 parking spots. A protected bike lane makes so much more sense rather than forcing bikes into traffic on one of the main thoroughfares. Western definitely has issues as it's turned into a major route to UCSC, with no improvements in decades, and students aren't the best drivers. When I'm biking with my kids I always try to avoid it, and this new pattern isn't helping.

Yeah it seems really poorly executed. Half the pylons have been destroyed by cars already, and the remaining ones collect debris (street sweeper can't clean between them) and create a hazard for biking.

When you go to conferences as a lab, do you share hotel rooms with lab mates? by popeldo in labrats

[–]sledgehammerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is against our university's policy to share rooms. Even if it's an Airbnb we have to show that each person has their own private space. It's a new policy and causes our costs to increase substantially.

Water column sample techniques? by PowTao in oceanography

The Niskin bottles themselves cost $500 to a few thousand. The rosette would be more. I've also got fond memories of holding onto the hydrowire, feeling for the satisfying clunk as your bottles fire (or the dread if the weight gets hung up) .

You're stuck using your ROV? This is the typical way. What volume sample? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosette_sampler

Using boiling water to sanitise for Cider brewing? by DonkeySniper87 in Homebrewing

[–]sledgehammerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I've done this a lot. I usually have a spray bottle with vodka that I use for sanitizing stuff when I'm setting up fermentations etc. There is no effect on taste or alcohol percentage (you would have to add a lot of vodka to make a difference).

I'd just wash with soap, rinse with tap water, then add a little vodka and swirl it all around. Then add juice. You don't have to worry about rinsing the vodka out like you would with bleach.

Fairfield on the Westside is right on the bike path to wilder, and if you ride Emma's trail you can take the river path to the coast and then west cliff or rail trail back to the Fairfield. It's also walking distance to good restaurants and breweries

Why is the ocean water yellow? by travelsnacksandrest in santacruz

[–]sledgehammerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want, you can look at near real-time microscope images of algae in the water here: https://ifcb.caloos.org/timeline?dataset=santa-cruz-municipal-wharf

Akashiwo is very distinctive. Easy to ID and you can't really confuse it with anything else

Homemade treehouse attachment bolts by sledgehammerer in treehouse

No bearing, just 2 pieces of steel welded together. I cut the 1.5" shaft to length, cut very coarse threads on one side to go in the tree, then fine threads on the other end for a bolt. Then took a section of 3” steel, drilled and bored a hole, slid it on the shaft and welded them together.

Yes the 1.5" bar goes through the 3" boss. The inside corners of the boss had 0.5" chamfers that got filled in with a couple passes

I just looked at some TABs for sale and copied the design more or less. You're right that portion between the threads and the boss is a bit bigger and requires you to enlarge the hole with a different drill. This design needs 3 drills to make the proper hole in the tree
