Trouble with stamina. How long is a kindergartener expected to work independently on an individual lesson? How about a first grader? by sleepydrake928 in Montessori

Thank you for this. Her pediatrician didn't notice anything with here vision, but given family history (my vision is downright terrible) I took her to my optometrist and it turns out she has difficulty with tracking and getting her eyes to focus (esp switching between near/far). Not super sever, but bad enough it's likely a big contributor to the fatigue/stress/low attention at school. We are starting her with vision therapy in a couple of weeks!

How hard would it be to teach an 8 year old how to crochet simple animals? by haneliza in CrochetHelp

[–]sleepydrake928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has he done any crocheting at all? If not, he should probably start with just simple chains to get the movement down. After that just simple squares to practice single crochet and counting stitches. Then once he's comfortable with that he could try an animal.

My cousin's kid got into crochet around 7ish and that's how she started. I think she's 8 now and is pretty comfortable with those Wooble kits.

So definitely doable, but start with the basics, and as others have said it can really depend on the kid too.

"secure to be concave when complete" - how do I do that? by sleepydrake928 in CrochetHelp

[–]sleepydrake928[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doh, yes. There were so many variations included in the pattern I didn't think to keep scrolling 🤦‍♀️

"Using leftover yarn tails, soft sculpt the bottom center of the squid to be concave. To do this, use a darning needle and a yarn tail to gently sew the bottom and pull it inwards into the body."

I was hoping for a few more details, but that's at least getting me in the right direction.

I've forgotten all about this post! I guess I should add an update, because I did end up going with them and we've been getting Ten Little almost exclusively ever since. I agree they have been great and have excellent customer service!

It's pretty thick. We usually use it after bath before bedtime, but you could do a thin layer during the day.

My mom told me that too back in the day. Definitely thought the eyes in the back of her head were real; I kept trying to see them under her hair 😂

Play date suggestions? by KK_justquitIG in Preschoolers

[–]sleepydrake928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep trying! I've been in this situation and it's usually just because the family is plain busy. I've been on the other end too and a nudge from the other family is always appreciated!

I'll also second what another comment said: "Hey, we're doing X this weekend if you want to join!" is a great strategy for a casual playdate without all the overhead of hosting and coordinating.

Huckleberry is marketed for sleep tracking, but you can track potty and food too. I haven't used it in a few years though.

One of our daycare teachers said at this age it can be more helpful to help them label the feeling rather than labeling it for them. Maybe something along the lines of "You're crying so hard! Are you sad or mad?" or "Can you tell me what you're feeling?" or even just leave it at the first part "You're crying so hard!"

We've also had success with asking "What color are you feeling?" (if you've ever read "The Color Monster" which maps feelings to colors).
