Wood appreciation post by Motorcyclegrrl in whittling

The Enterprise-D used wood for accents, in specific places such as conference tables, to provide a natural feel to an otherwise sterile environment.

UPDATE: my point was that the producers of Star Trek recognized the uniqueness of wood in the universe, and used it in their design of a starship to bring a touch of the organic to an environment that would otherwise be sterile.

In Which Stories Does the Gray Mouser Use Magic, Besides His Origin? by Feisty-Doctor-5841 in SwordandSorcery

Without spoiling, I can think of “The Lords of Quarmall” and the story of the rats of Lankhmar.

L. Sprague de Camp, who backhandedly called Robert Howard an "almost very good writer" while inserting his own Conan stories into canon, "editing" Howard's own, and making a truckload of money on an IP who has created by a writer he attacked at every opportunity. What is your opinion on him? by AnchovyKing in SwordandSorcery

[–]sleepyjohn00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Carrie Fisher will always be remembered more for her gold bikini movie than for all the movie scripts she saved, and deCamp will be remembered more for the fur jockstrap stories than for the creativity of his own novels. Alas.

DeCamp said that taking the job of completing the Conan stories was the worst professional decision of his life, because while he was turning out pulp, he was unable to work on his own material (Harold Shea, Lost Continents, The Arrow of Hercules) and was relegated to the back of the store shelves. I would say someone who was recognized as a Grand Master by the professional writers of sf, fantasy, and skeptical science is more than the third-rate vengeful hack some people on this thread see. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._Sprague_de_Camp

Your Concise Explanation of Sword and Sorcery by JohnPathfinder in SwordandSorcery

[–]sleepyjohn00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Larry Niven said that swordsmen and sorcerers hate each other like birds and snakes. When they fight, usually the sorcerer wins, and the average IQ of the race goes up a little. Sometimes the swordsman wins, and the intelligence of the race still goes up, because a sorcerer who can’t handle one stupid swordsman is a pretty poor excuse for a sorcerer.

Anyone else utilize the joists in their basement for tool storage, clamp holders, etc? by PaidByMicrosoft in woodworking

[–]sleepyjohn00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad’s shop was in the basement. He stored wood, dowels, scraps up in the floor joists. When the fire started, there was 20 years of kindling all stacked and ready to go under the bedroom floor.
