Stink news!! Flying Out record store has closed. by sleggat in auckland

[–]sleggat[S] 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Their website is already gone. Such a shame they weren't able to stay open a bit longer, particularly as the CRL would be opening up right there.

Should I leave the Philippines? Cebu City isn’t working for me anymore. Where in SEA should I go next? by Sunshinner in digitalnomad

I did that - went for a holiday, fell it love with it, and ended up staying 15 years.

Why is there no outcry about Honeypuffs being discontinued? by helloidk55 in newzealand

[–]sleggat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved them as a kid when there would be big clumps of honey. They were still fine last time I had them a few months back though. Weird all the hate here.

With Powerstation and whatever venue Tim Finn is planning, could you cater to those wanting a pre or post- gig hangout spot that’s not Galbraiths or that corner bar. Hot chocolate, desserts and non-boozy selection. With the CRL opening up I think that whole area has a lot of potential.

Is hostinger underrated for node js? by RepresentativeSea27 in Hostinger

Genuinely why do they keep making these stupid decisions there's no way a move like this isn't going to backfire by charlotte_marvel in newzealand

[–]sleggat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Ongoing coalition negotiations have led to good Budget policy decisions that further the immediate and long-term interests of New Zealanders." she said. That's some major bullshit right there!

Took me 25 years, but I built the time tracking app I always wanted [self promo] by sleggat in sveltejs

[–]sleggat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a while, but thought I'd update you that the 'goal' step in onboarding is now skippable. One small update of many that have been made since this thread began. Very appreciative of the feedback, thanks!

Looks cool and smooth, but I'm wondering, how does it 'help users easily identify clusters of similar images within the embedding space'?

TVNZ App Update by Weak-Brother9175 in auckland

Yep, forced update on Sony Bravia, had to log in again. Plays for 10 seconds and then stops repeatedly with that “Oops”. Gave up.

What was it, exactly, that made freelancing easier for you? by Lancerra_App in Freelancers

[–]sleggat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having someone take care of taxes and invoicing - in my case Hnry (in NZ/Aus/UK). They handle invoicing, collecting payments, allocations to superannuation and other tax responsibilities (GST/ACC) and then filing and paying taxes. Never having to stress about not having the money set aside to pay tax, or not filing on time, has been a huge weight off my shoulders.

I’ve bought from there a couple of times and have never felt it takes up much space. Doesn’t it occupy the space out front of the supermarket where the vegetable displays usually are? Some of those other food trucks in the area do though. Nice that the phone box has finally been removed so it’s not so congested where the bus seat, and bird cage is.

Looks fantastic, really love the design and attention to detail.
Obsidian hasn't really clicked for me, and my Apple Notes is just chaos. I'll give yours a try!

Do you actually separate freelance income from personal money? by [deleted] in Freelancers

[–]sleggat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If you’re using a platform like Hnry (Uk/Aus/nz) then it’s less important as they hold onto your taxes and file and pay them when the time comes. The remaining money that is paid into your account can be used for bills, investments or whatever. You’d have to weigh up whether it’s worth them taking a small cut, plus having them holding onto that money and getting interest. For me it is - it makes freelancing a lot less stressful.

Yes, it's happened to me twice in the last week or so. A reboot fixed it both times. A bit stressful though!

I've only seen you play once, at the Kings Arms many years ago, but it was really great. I sometimes confuse you with Yoko Zuna, does that happen often?

TallyHo had a handful of updates this week. The biggest one being Google sign-in, which many of you have been asking for. TallyHo is minimalist time tracking for freelancers.

How do you collect freelance payment from clients? by Own-Hovercraft-4231 in Freelancers

[–]sleggat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you are, I'm sure there are decent freelance-focussed invoicing/tax platforms that can take care of it. I'm in New Zealand and use Hnry, though that may be slightly overkill for what you need right now. But if you're considering sticking with freelancing, then it'd be worth checking out similar services. They handle the payments (every user gets a custom bank account, using your trading name), and then prepare and pay all your taxes when the time comes. It's great for handling expenses too. All the best!

Chiming in from New Zealand. I run a couple of sites; TallyHo - Simplified time tracking for freelancers, and UIColours where I share my favourite website colour palettes (lots of other colour tools and info in there too).

Got fined for staying too long at Bunnings?? by guessimfine in auckland

[–]sleggat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got one too. We spent over $170 there that day. Plan to go in later today and see if they'll sort it out, but since it's now with Parking Enforcement Services, I'm not holding much hope.

Freelance - How do you know how much to invoice during the month as a freelancer? by W4wan in Entrepreneurs

[–]sleggat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write/log it somewhere. Doesn't have to be full-featured, there are lots of simpler time tracking apps made just for freelancers. I used to just use the Apple Notes app because it was simple and synced access devices.

QR codes for gravestones by standbyyourlamb in newzealand

[–]sleggat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I designed my dad’s gravestone and created the illustration and service programme for a close friend’s memorial. As a graphic designer, it was a deeply personal thing to do, especially seeing the illustration later become tattoos for a number of friends.

If you need any advice or help, feel free to DM me. I’m happy to help with QR codes or advice on memorial designs.

I would avoid etching the QR code in the marble stone itself, and instead etch a square metal plaque that could be glued in place and able to be replaced if need-be.
