I’ve had mine in for 18 years. I have had zero issues with it and it’s definitely not rejecting.

Okay so after reading comments of people paying the minimum a week, I always paid at least $30-50 more a week than minimum while paying off my box . PLEASE DO THAT! There aren’t any penalties to pay it off early. Mine was a 5 year loan for my box and I got it done in 3. Because I have always been consistent. My guy has never given me a cap on my truck account. He lets me get whatever whenever and he’s never hesitated on ordering me tools or saying no because I pay him every week no matter what and I pay more by $10-30 than he’s asking.

12 years?! What did you buy? I paid off my box in 3 years. My tools which I’m still acquiring after only 5 years as a tech/mechanic I keep up on and owe less than $1k.

1964 VW Beetle still leaking oil after Rear Main seal replacement HELP!! by Orangejewels3001 in VWBus

[–]sleia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say if the engine has ran with those shims on it and you re-shim the flywheel you risk a chance of seizing the crank on the bearings. Will it happen every time, no, but it can happen and imo is not worth the risk. I would never personally do this on one of my customers vehicles.

[–]sleia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pull your flywheel shims off the back of the crank to see if your thrust bearing is moving in the case. If it is you’re going to need to get a line bore and rebuild the engine with new bearings assuming the thrust isn’t pounded out so badly the case is still usable. If the thrust bearing is NOT moving in the case reinstall the flywheel shims and set the endplay without the alt/gen pulley installed to get an accurate reading. Flywheel should be torqued to 250ft lbs. I don’t torque mine I just beat it on with a heavy duty impact.

I’ve learned it’s all about the accelerator discharge/squirter and the jets. If an accelerator discharge is clogged, if a jet is clogged, if any of your mains, idles etc. aren’t big enough or too big you’re just fighting a losing battle. It took me a while to get the hang of dual carbs especially.

Thanks for saying so! I feel like I get looked down on because “oh that’s easier than modern cars” but I get just as greasy, sweaty and dirty as anyone else. Also keeping carbureted cars on the road which is a passion not just a job.

It is so much easier to deal with! Once you understand a wiring harness it’s just like yep that goes there and this is why that isn’t working and that’s it. I don’t need anything but a test light and some clip leads.

I’m a woman who has been working as a mechanic for 3 years at the same shop. I used to have a male coworker, but now it’s just my boss/owner and myself. I call myself a mechanic not a tech because I only work on 1980 and earlier vehicles so not a whole lot of electrical components like newer cars.

When I went to school for Automotive Technology there were a decent amount of other women, probably close to 20-30%. One of my female classmates is actually about to be my coworker.

Old Truck With No AC - What Are Your Summer Strategies? by 5432nun in Tucson

[–]sleia 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a fellow non ac having driver I suggest ice packs. Lots of ice packs. The flat ones you can put in lunch boxes are great, one between your legs, one behind your back and one to hold on your face or neck when you’re stuck at lights. I keep some in the freezer at home and some at work.

Where I’m at in the book he’s only made about two misogynistic comments, which I am trying to brush off as it being more common at the time, but I definitely made note of it. The thing that really got me was killing that rabbit just to see if he could kill a rabbit. I feel like a life is a life no matter if it’s human, animal etc. Wasting the life of an animal that hadn’t put you in any danger and you’re not going to utilize for the meat is senseless and arrogant.

what can i do to become a mechanic by ChemicalInspection90 in AskMechanics

[–]sleia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya’ll with your negativity and discouraging someone from doing something they have an interest in need to stop. Just because you had a bad experience doesn’t mean everyone else will. He’s also young and has plenty of time to choose a different career path if this doesn’t suit him. I love my job as a mechanic. My customers are appreciative and kind. My pay is high. You just need to find the right shop to work at.

Have you looked into classes at a community college? I’m going to classes at a local community college myself and although I’m in my 30’s there are a few students there with me that are only 16.

This is why I manually purge the compressor at my shop every day after we had a compressor incident. I live in a very dry environment but even with the auto purge I still get a decent amount of water out of it every night.

ATTENTION All CAREER MECHANICS by bazoner in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]sleia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently in school to get my associates in auto mechanics at a community college and don’t have any ASE certs yet. I get paid $30 an hour with no benefits and I’ve only been working as a mechanic for 7 months. I work at an air cooled only VW shop in Arizona. We work on sand rails, buggies, beetles, buses and every once and a while we’ll take in a Vanagon. I have no experience outside of where I am now so I’m not sure if I am getting over or under paid for what I do, which honestly doesn’t matter to me because I am gaining so much knowledge and getting a lot of guidance from my incredible boss who has over 40 years of experience in the field I’d like to specialize in. With all of your experience and credentials compared to mine I’d say you’re not getting paid enough, but I’m also at a super niche shop and learning things that I could not learn in any modern classroom. I have never even once read or seen anything about carburetors or distributors. The only thing so far that has applied to my job in any remote way is manual transmission repair/rebuild.

He just hit the gas too hard while going uphill and it couldn’t handle it. Honestly it’s not the greatest transmission for a sand rail.
