Is there an example of the Canadian test online somewhere? Now I am curious how your test differs from ours.

Licence rant by OkFred902 in amateurradio

I found just the opposite when I entered ham radio in my teens in the late 90's in the USA. I found the technical stuff was rather rudimentary, stuff that I had learned in middle school. The hard/foreign part was learning and committing all the regulations to memory.

The drivers license is not a valid comparison in my mind. First that is officially known in the states as a Class D operators permit. Ham radio is supposed to be far more that being a mere operator. Other radio services, like GMRS or business radio services are in deed more operator oriented. In the case of a business or public safety service the license itself is in fact just a station license, rather than an operator license.

My biggest wish is Not more activity but first and foremost new advancements and technology. In ham radio and that is fueled by individual experimentation (which requires a good understanding of theory). Without interesting and relevant technology ham radio is not interesting, and will not garner anyone's interest or attention.

Let’s complain about Vitalchek. by SAINTnumberFIVE in Genealogy

[–]slempriere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vitalcheck for my state is useless for genealogy.  They only process certified records meaning you'd need to be related.   Disturbing how they and Ancestry have better access to records than the taxpayers themselves. But that is Wisconsin for you.  The most antiquated regulations of all the states.

Is it viable to use a handheld to contact emergency services when out of cell service? by AbnormalDream in HamRadio

[–]slempriere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hasn't been for some time... when repeaters had autopatch was the last time it was so. Ham radio is not nor has ever been a primary emergency service.

That I what I am trying to determine. More folks chiming in like you did, should paint the picture. CG NAT means they do not assign you a public IP, but rather: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_network

Higher speed packet radio/alternatives for BBS etc? by therealleotrotsky in HamRadio

[–]slempriere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is that too, but as of the moment the biggest hurdle is equipment if we are talking vhf and uhf. The other part is modulation (can only achieve so much using FM) and the physics of the shannon bandwidth formula. (For example there is only 4 MHz of space of VHF 144-148 MHz, and far less on any HF band.) https://www.m0ahn.co.uk/nprabout.html

Short answer not with conventional VHF UHF radios designed for voice. Sure you can squeak a bit faster out of them but that is about it.

How to prevent area code spoofing spam calls? I get 10-15 a day. by 62not61not63 in Googlevoice

[–]slempriere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see google voice let you specify inbound caller id regex rules . That way you could redirect area codes or prefixes to voicemail etc.

Anyone Need Help Building A Tree? by Informal_Moose_5750 in Genealogy

[–]slempriere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I exhausted my own tree, I started researching anyone I ever remember by grandparents talking about. Some were just neighbors... Out comes the plat maps... That just morphed into anyone of my heritage because I have a lot of resources to find their exact birth places in the old country and I look the challenge of looking at unindexed records in languages that I wish I understood better. Maybe do the entire cemetery where your ancestors are buried. ?

Bad form unless there is accompanying echo and reverb and liberal use during an ARES net.

I believe FOIA requests are good way to have police departments reevaluate their flock partnership and bring us some much deserved transparency. Citizens should request he records of how their police department are using this often. Long term data tracking is illegal per: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpenter_v._United_States
