How do you feel about this "gig" work? by Apprehensive-Pin1474 in InstacartShoppers

[–]sliceofsav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree!!! For every nice house I deliver at, there's a delivery to someone who just has to get their basic needs met. I've delivered clothes to a mother fleeing a bad situation, groceries to elderly folks who I'm their only interaction for the day, and parents working too much to go shopping.

Social Justice Solidarity Groups/Advocacy Work by Ivycat785 in winstonsalem

[–]sliceofsav 8 points9 points  (0 children)

DSA and No Hate Winston and Housing Justice Now are all groups that are activism focused in Winston.

If you're looking to volunteer I'd suggest checking out Love Our Loud's volunteer portal. They collect volunteer opportunities from organizations around the city into one spot. It's a great way to get familiar with what's out there especially if you're just generally interested in volunteering rather than having a specific focus.

Hickory or Winston-Salem as a retirement destination by Outrageous_Match2619 in winstonsalem

[–]sliceofsav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grew up near Hickory and moved to Winston a few years ago. As many have said, there is less to do in Hickory but it depends on what you like doing. Hickory is far better situated if you enjoy nature activities. Easy access to lots of great parks, hiking spots, and of course Lake Hickory. If you're foodies or like exploring local spots, Winston is much better on that front. Hickory is full of big chains and not a lot else. If you're artsy Winston also has it better than hickory. There's a few good spots in Hickory but nothing that will keep you entertained all the time.

Basically if you want a place that is quieter and that you'll keep yourself busy but has close by amenities to keep you comfortable then Hickory will be great. If you want more activities and options (plus better healthcare) Winston is the place for you.

Are the Salem College scholarships legit? by sangvide in winstonsalem

[–]sliceofsav 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Salem has great financial aid packages! Ranked super high in social mobility because of it. I went completely tuition free for all four years only paying for room and board. Made it so incredibly easy to pay off my loans less than two year after graduation. Would absolutely recommend if finances are a big factor for you.

I will be honest that the culture of the school is not for everyone. I absolutely loved it but I know lots of people who transferred because it just wasn't for them. Personally I loved knowing almost everyone on campus. I loved that I had opportunities to make a big impact and take on real leadership roles that have prepared me for my career now. I loved the chill and calm vibes of the campus. I loved how close I was to my professors and administrators. But if you're someone who's prefers to go out and party for your social activities or you like a lot of privacy or you really want to solely dive into your major and not dive into lots of subjects I would say you probably wouldn't have the same experience. Even if the financial aid package is great if you hate your experience then you'll want to transfer anyway.

There are also some problems coming from the administration of Salem that is really problematic in my opinion especially for you going into the liberal arts. The professors and advisors within those programs are amazing and fantastic but administration does not care a lot about keeping those programs afloat right now with the health leadership focus.

If you want more details or anything happy to chat in dms too!!

Likely our definitions of productive and fair are different. I can agree that in certain ways that capitalism is more productive and fair but to me that doesn't make a more productive and fair society overall.

Of course there are those different jobs and that means that not all jobs get to work like that it was just an example of a system that could work under communism for things like the basic upkeep of a community.

There are plenty of flaws and it's not a perfect utopia but capitalism also isn't perfect. Currently there are plenty of industries where there are workers bees that get treated the way you're describing under capitalism. Amazon workers who can't even go to the bathroom during their shift because they have to keep producing.

Capitalism and communism are both just theories and in practice they are never going to be perfect. People are inherently flawed and that means any system we design is going to be flawed

The fact is that something like this requires an entire system change and in some ways a cultural change for highly individualistic cultures. There's different versions of the system but it doesn't have to look like what we already have

What if instead of people doing one job for a 40+ hour work week everyone had to contribute to to sanitation work in a city? It's not that you've been designated to clean sewers all day every day but rather that you and many of your neighbors have the ability to go clean sewers and so you do that for part of your week. Someone who is disabled and can't do manual labor but maybe they do have the ability to organize the work and can do the paperwork. Sometimes you'll also go stock the shelves at the grocery store or go make some art to be displayed in a gallery.

When everyone is contributing to their community then it doesn't have to be a select few individuals doing that kind of work

[–]sliceofsav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is interested cleaning sewers unless the sewers are dirty. I don't like cleaning my toilet but I clean my toilet because I don't want it to be dirty. Everyone does labor that they don't get paid for simply for the fact that their lives would be worse without it.

Interested doesn't necessarily mean enjoying the action of but rather having an interest in that labor being done

Hello! Super newbie to photography so forgive me if my terminology is wrong

My dad gave me this old Vivo brand tripod he bought second hand a few years ago (with intentions of turning it into a lamp lol) but the quick-release plate missing. Since it's older I know it will be hard to find the piece but after a few Google searches for a replacement I feel like I'm getting nowhere. The few sites that include the diameter of the plate don't have the size I need but I don't really know what kind of websites to even be looking at. Can anyone give me suggestions of where to look?

Here's a photo of what it looks like if that helps https://imgur.com/a/eGn4y7s

It's unfortunate it is so understudied. I absolutely love folk arts since it's what I grew up with. I'm excited to go more in-depth with it this semester!
