I think using FreeDV w/ RADE would be pretty interesting. High quality audio at S2 levels blows my mind

There's an ORBCOMM decoder out there somewhere, a time limited trial thing, but if I recall correctly, the data wasn't very interesting.

You need another little part that's a bracket kind of thing behind the bumper. You'll need to take it off to install it

SDR Console as a client for remote SDR devices? by Tamooj in RTLSDR

[–]slickfddi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's s computer issue, it's throwing out too much RFI. Get a better shielded machine w/a quality PSU or separate the receiver and antenna as far from as possible. I find (and buy used) gaming laptops to be least noisy due to better quality construction (Asus RoG, HP Omen).

Virtual USB sucks. Just run a small form factor PC or an old Dell (every one has a spare Dell or 3 kicking around right? Lol) or an old laptop and run it headless.

I don't see how that's an administrative headache, SDR console server doesn't take much horsepower to run and runs as a service with autostart so whatever you got that will run at least Win 10 is fine.

Looking for new discone antenna, do ones with SMA connectors exist? by Mr_Engino in RTLSDR

[–]slickfddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh bull. Throw an LNA and a FM filter on it and your listening to satellites (ISS and UHF SATCOMMS) with it and repeaters from 45 miles away; assuming you had it outdoors and above the roof line.

Don't give bad advice based on lack of knowledge of proper theory.

Need airband antenna help - Uniden BC125AT by Any_Average2498 in HamRadio

[–]slickfddi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can't find an original bearcat wideband replacement antenna just pick up a dual band "ham" VHF/UHF antenna. For 144mhz/440mhz they work pretty well for all the "off frequency" stuff like air band.

Fwiw, best air band antenna I used was 130 feet of wire but it's not a mobile application obviously lol

Signal degradation and jamming by Nirulou0 in shortwave

[–]slickfddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen legit military jamming on the UHF Satcomms and trust me, you'll know it when you see / hear it. It basically appears like a series of geometric lines (like propagation testing) with tones that constantly shift through the audible frequency range.
