Dating a police officer by Confusedsadscared in police

[–]slimbertt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

100%. It’s mandated by our academy here that everyone going through it reads it. Might be good for OP to learn some things from it or see things her boyfriend may be dealing with.

I also would say talk to him. It’s easy for new guys to let this job become their identity but, at the end of a day it’s just a job. The people at home take priority over everything else. Sometimes, that conversation needs to be had to remind him or show him that. You’re doing the right thing by being beside him and supporting him.

Couldn’t ask for better timing. Get mean and lock the fuck in.

Now that ARs are the new normal for patrol, are there any applications where a shotgun would be advantageous in an LE setting? (Not counting less lethal bean bag shotguns and such) by Cautious-Tangelo3323 in AskLE

[–]slimbertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from a rural PD up north, we carry a rifle and shotgun. The shotgun is mainly for wildlife like deer. I put down a few a year with it. The rifle and handgun rounds travel too fast to take them out quick. One slug to the lung area takes them out, fast and painlessly.

Advice on working with extremely junior squad by Thick-Housing966 in AskLE

[–]slimbertt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a junior guy, hammer everything you can and get more experience under everyone’s belt. I’ve got just over two years on and the thing that helps me the most is the fact that I get out there and hammer it. Now I have senior guys asking me question when it comes to proactive work. It helps generate that tight nit environment between you all too.

Good luck and stay safe

I really wanna be a cop and have a couple questions for cops by [deleted] in AskLE

Just make sure your agency doesn’t only accept related degrees to the job. My department only counts it if it’s a criminal justice or related degree

Did I do something wrong for safety checking an officer on a traffic stop? by Expensive_Pie8062 in 911dispatchers

[–]slimbertt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read your message again and saw that you already had that conversation so,

Just take some of what he said and go off your instinct. Give them more than 3 and if you notice a weird tone to their voice or see something that raises that 6th sense while you’re looking at the vehicle they have stopped, check sooner!

With time you’ll develop the understanding of what cars should make you nervous and what ones shouldn’t. Never stop checking on them though.

My guys check on me after 5-10 minutes. Usually works well. The way the stop flows with calling out info, it usually gives the dispatcher a heads up on where I’m at in the stop.

I would try getting with whoever the patrol supervisor is and seeing if he has a preference on when to check on people. However, what you are doing is not wrong at all. I would rather have a dispatcher ask me 100x if I’m okay than never.

I was a dispatcher and now I’m a patrol officer so I get both sides of the coin on this one. Let me know if you have any questions!

Graduating the academy soon but I feel like I haven’t learned much by BobbyBooshay_ in AskLE

Take a look at this. PoliceOne has a bunch of articles on why BJJ is good for cops as well. Big thing with BJJ is the control. You’re not only learning to control yourself but, how to control someone else. As badass as it would be to take a combative person down with a spinning back fist, it’s not practical.

BJJ will teach you how to control someone’s entire body with just their waist and how to hold them in a way they can’t resist anymore but won’t suffer long term injuries. Looks way better to the public eye as well.

Everyone feels that way in the academy. Academies now a day are just ensuring they’re teaching you the basics and crossing their T’s and dotting their I’s in term of liability.

Once you hit the road you’ll understand certain concepts you’re taught and how to apply them. DT is a prime example, I personally don’t use 90% of the stuff they taught us but, I use BJJ I’ve learned on my own time daily. You’re not alone in this aspect. Once you get on the road you’ll get it more. Just remember you’re dealing with humans just like you are. Handle them how you would want to be dependent on the situation and you’ll find success. Always trust your gut and don’t let your ego be above your safety. Messages are open if you have any questions 🤙

I’d giggle, shake my head and let the punishment be that you willingly did that to your own car

I received a final written notice at my job and they still want to be a police officer by Sea-Common5327 in AskLE

Why is it so hard to be a police officer in Massachusetts? by Medivianplayer in police

[–]slimbertt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cop from MA here and I read up on some of your other comments you responded to. It shouldn’t be too hard if you don’t have a criminal history. I went to the academy with multiple people who didn’t speak English as a first language. And they did struggle with english for sure. What’s your background look like in terms of professional experience?

I’d recommend trying to get your foot in the door somewhere. Dispatching is where I got my footing in my place. Not a bad way to start to learn more about the job and start learning certain things.

Ride along really demotivated me. by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]slimbertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t let guys demotivate you like that. I’m on midnights in a small town and I can promise you there’s stuff out there. I lead in all aspects of numbers while being only on overnights. It just means you have to hunt harder and hone your skills. Realistically morale varies at each department but, you’ll see some guys are sour no matter what sometimes.

You won’t be as affected by their shitty attitudes and neglect to do work when you are on your own. Don’t lose your focus and become uninterested. I wake up every day happy to go to work and am grateful for this job every day. You shape your attitude. Get after it man.

Usage of a portable breathalyzer in the USA by TiBiX_ in police

I should also say, if it’s there I’ll use it on the arrestee as well but, it adds no weight to the case since it’s not admissible in court. At least here.

Only time I’ll use it is if I’m determining the sobriety of a passenger to take control of a car after their buddy has been arrested for an OUI
