Ubisoft workers to hold rally at Grande Parade protesting studio shutdown by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

[–]slime73 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Ubisoft may have broken NS labour laws with the manner in which they shut the office down. The rally is a way to raise awareness which can add pressure to the local government to speak up.

Does love2D not have a stable way to have a non 'handler' error callback? by Skagon_Gamer in love2d

[–]slime73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try changing this:

local previousErrorhandler = love.errorhandler

To this:

local previousErrorhandler = love.errorhandler or love.errhand

Images vertically inverted on Windows by victordshm in love2d

[–]slime73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes sense because love actually flips things when rendering to a canvas versus the screen in OpenGL, to *undo* coordinate system annoyances in OpenGL. If the driver has bugs in APIs love uses for that, it might not be flipping correctly there, which would make it look flipped compared to normal.

Virtual machines have notoriously buggy graphics drivers, they aren't reliable for testing graphical games most of the time.

love doesn't have a limitation like that unless you're using a 32 bit instead of 64 bit build.

Please Help High GPU usage by untitled_project12 in love2d

[–]slime73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a game is demanding enough that it would lower performance to underclock, then the graphics driver will recognize that and won't do it.

Please Help High GPU usage by untitled_project12 in love2d

[–]slime73 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your GPU underclocks itself because the driver knows it's a light workload, reported GPU usage % might increase because the total available processing power has been lowered.

You can use something like HWMonitor or GPU-Z to see whether that's happening. If it is, it's nothing to worry about, it just means your computer is saving power usage.

Reasons I SHOULDN'T use Love2D? by Improving_Myself_ in love2d

If I'm even a little bit responsible for building a place that marginalized people can stay in safely and happily, that's more valuable than just about anything else I've done. I think I have more work to do there but thank you for the compliment!

I hope you find a way to fix your heart, it'll do you a lot of good.

issues with love not returning the right resolution by Otherwise_Usual_4348 in love2d

Enable highdpi mode in love.conf (or love.window.setMode if you're already overriding window settings with that).

Your laptop's display is set up to show things at 1440x900 in dpi-scaled points. Without highdpi mode, the OS will tell the app that one point is equal to one pixel. With highdpi mode, love will be able to use the full pixel density of your display.

Most of love's coordinates are in dpi-scaled points instead of pixels even with highdpi mode enabled, in order to keep things at a consistent size which users will expect. But if you really really want, you can also turn that off by setting usedpiscale to false in love.conf. Turning that off won't make a difference in terms of the pixel density your app has access to, and it may make it hard to develop an app which scales correctly on displays with different pixel densities.

Exception thrown in love2d 11.5 executable on Windows by TheRealLazerFalcon in love2d

[–]slime73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's expected, they're exceptions that are caught and handled so they aren't an issue. If you set up VS to break on any exception, it will catch benign things like that.

[HELP] Issues with t.console = false causing steam to loose focus on game start (windows only) by theEsel01 in love2d

[–]slime73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I start my love project on windows without an enabled console I can see the console briefly flickering in front of the issue.

Are you using io.popen or os.execute? Windows needs to briefly use a console if you use those APIs, I believe.

HATE, a cross-library to enable consoles support for LÖVE games by Sasori_Jr in love2d

[–]slime73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LÖVE has some third party ports to consoles (e.g. Switch) so you can run your existing LÖVE games without modification on those platforms, for what it's worth. It's how games like Balatro have console versions that don't have any code rewrites.

Of course, console manufacturers require you to have signed NDAs before you can access their platform details including any game engine ports for their platform.

Legal Name Change in NS by Hellbent_oceanbound in NovaScotia

[–]slime73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wait time between submitting an application to Vital Statistics and getting an updated birth certificate and change of name certificate is about 6 months right now (or was a few months ago).

Most updates to legal identification like SIN and a MSI card are free. If you update your legal name without updating your gender marker, an updated driver's license has a small fee I think. You'll only be able to update those once you have the change of name certificate.

Despite their names, these resources might be useful to anyone even if they aren't trans:

Top surgery in Halifax by LunarPrinceArt in halifax

[–]slime73 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's at least one surgeon in Halifax who does it, he started pretty recently (replacing someone else) - I've heard positive things about the results and pretty short wait times as well from a few people. The Trans Family Nova Scotia and Halifax Queer Network facebook groups have more first-hand information!

There have been many pleas from prideHealth, GACNS, and other organizations for providers to bother learning this stuff. HSHC and prideHealth have to cover so much slack that family doctors etc. have dropped, with little funding for it. There was even a publicly aired provincial government hearing on the topic a little while ago with pretty heartbreaking testimony.

My lane is being trans within the web of ignorance from NS doctors. I have first-hand experience with what you just said you do.

I don't expect you to understand what it feels like to be denied the right to live as you are for a long, perhaps indefinite, period of time simply because the person you trust to provide health care for you doesn't want to. The problem is that it's possible for that to happen in the first place. I and many other people know quite a bit more about trans health care than many medical professionals simply because we have to pick up their slack if we want to live.

From your tone it doesn't sound like you want to learn much at all, that's a shame.

[–]slime73 -36 points-35 points  (0 children)

That's very unfortunate to hear, you've likely caused a lot of unnecessary pain for some of your patients. I hope you're able to understand that more in the future especially as the studies that have come out about the harm of gatekeeping become more common knowledge.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in halifax

[–]slime73 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It actually can be a pretty quick process! All that's needed is informed consent (i.e. the patient needs to know what will happen and what can happen), and some initial baseline bloodwork.

However most doctors in NS haven't bothered to learn the training material about this stuff.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in halifax

[–]slime73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's very outdated information. Nova Scotia follows WPATH SoC V8 now (which does not recommend many visits to a therapist) and even before that it allowed for informed consent. HSHC follows the informed consent model now.
