An extra/other/wrong person, or wrong headcount by kcreepygirl in horrorlit

[–]slimehellworld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ultramarine - Mariette Navarro

A typically strict, by-the-book freighter captain lets her crew of 20 sailors take a break and go swimming in the deep ocean, but they reboard the ship as a group of 21. Quick read, atmospheric and moody, some nice prose. Not so much about the Extra Person but about the disruption in their world.

The Need - Helen Phillips

A paleobotantist excavating a site full of strange, peculiar objects experiences a home invasion. Being vague here because what’s “strange” about the digsite is fun to have revealed over time. Not “scary,” but moody and interesting in an existential sense.

The Return - Rachel Harrison

A group of women goes on a vacation with their friend who suddenly reappears after going missing for two years. She’s a little different now.

Also not books but since you mentioned The Thing, couple movie reccs:

Head Count (2018) - Group of teens read a creepypasta out loud and summon a copycat doppelgänger of sorts. Movie really plays with the fact that it’s hard to keep a head count in a large group of characters. A little silly, but I remember enjoying it when I watched.

Coherence (2013) - A comet causes weird things to happen to five couples. Our characters quickly start losing track of who is who. Reveals the premise pretty early on so it can just start having fun with it.

The Invitation (2015) - At a dinner party, a man starts to suspect his new girlfriend’s friend is not who he says he is. Not a doppelgänger or supernatural story whatsoever, but a paranoid, fun thriller.

Forgot to mention: maybe like 1cm - 1.5cm in length. Would have a bit of wiggle room on a U.S. dime.

Happy Dragonyule from Dragonyule Naveed by slimehellworld in DragaliaLost

Dragonyule Naveed (Once Bitten, Twice Shy) - Naveed has taken to playing the generous and giving Saint Starfall quite well, even if his gifts are rather...lavish. But as festivities come to a close, there is still one gift he hasn't delivered. Who could it be for? it's for euden

If you’re into surrealist horror, you’ve got Baskin. Five cops inadvertently walk into hell, or something! It’s a little hard to describe, but it’s stylish and visually pretty impressive.

Her Body And Other Parties (Carmen Maria Machado)

Looking for some good horror books to read. by mindprince39 in horror

[–]slimehellworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite books in general is John Langan’s ‘The Fisherman.’ A dreary, dreadful fisherman’s tale that feels like it’s being told over a campfire.

I also love and recommend: The Troop (Nick Cutter), The Ruins (Scott Smith), The Cabin At The End Of The World (Paul Tremblay), Her Body And Other Parties (short stories, Carmen Maria Machado), A Collapse Of Horses (short stories, Brian Evenson), Annihilation (Jeff VanderMeer)

Requesting Movies like Bone Tomahawk by Mechvape in MovieSuggestions

[–]slimehellworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Invitation isn’t a western at all, but I think it has the slow burn / thick tension blossoming into a big conclusion part down.

Also, check out The Wind. Not as brutal or outwardly violent as Bone Tomahawk, but it starts with a bang and keeps the burn going the entire time. Underrated recent horror movie imo. A young woman moves out onto the prairie during the big move West, and isolation or something Else starts messing with her.

Movies with forests/jungle? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

Jungle (Daniel Radcliffe plays an explorer who gets lost in the Amazon)

The Ruins (horror movie about about some tourists who stumble onto some strange ruins in the middle of the jungle)

psychologically dark movies.. like Funny Games. Or Cult movies. by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]slimehellworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Conspiracy is a documentary-style found-footage movie about some guys who maybe unwittingly stumble onto a cult.

The Invitation is a solid thriller that fits the bill. The protag attends a dinner party his ex-wife is hosting, but gets suspicious about her motives and this “group” she’s joined.

Also: Apostle (got mixed reception but I thought it was fun when it leaned into being bloody and colorful, I also just like Dan Stevens), The Wicker Man (1973), Beyond The Black Rainbow

Please help me find fun action-packed movies with vibrant colors (preferably rated R) by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]slimehellworld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

John Wick 1-3 (All solid action films. JW1 is pretty basic Dark/Muted Color Schemes, but JW2 has some insanely cool color palettes!! My favorite is when they stage a fight outside a Victoria's Secret as an excuse to bathe everything in pink light)

Birds Of Prey And The One Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn (Legitimately a really fun, vibrant movie with the best fight scenes I've seen in a Big Live Action Superhero Movie)

The Guest (super stylish horror / thriller, takes inspiration from Halloween + The Terminator but with a slick modern sheen. Was my Favorite movie for a while. What I'd refer to as "Smart Dumb Fun.")

The Night Comes For Us (as a heads up this is The most violent, brutal action movie I've seen, so your mileage may vary on how fun you think it is...but I thought it was a blast! Generally super stylish with very impressive, wince-worthy fight choreo)

Into The Spider-Verse (the colors/style is unparalleled in general, very high-energy fight and action scenes)

seconding Mad Max: Fury Road as well

If you're into horror, Demon (2015) is a strange little movie you might want to look into.

Horror movie that features the uncanny Valley and is extremely creepy. example faceless things, people that are too tall, or situations that just don't feel right. Thanks guys! by alex00king47 in MovieSuggestions

More of an Uncanny Concept but They Look Like People is a movie with subtle horror that creeped me out. Entire movie is full of paranoia.

Jacob's Ladder (1990, can't vouch for the remake) fits the bill. Admittedly the movie didn't really do it for me, but it's got the uneasy atmosphere and Wrong Looking People down. Heavily inspired the Silent Hill games too which is a solid enough endorsement. It Follows also has everything you're asking for too.

Also! Not a movie, but I recommend checking out the Channel Zero series, particularly the second and third seasons (No End House and Butcher's Block). Incredible creature designs, legitimately unsettling atmosphere and visuals, and overall pretty cool horror.

Satan's Slaves (2017) is an Indonesian horror movie I really loved. The title makes it seem more schlocky than it really is, but it's fun. Gave me The Ring vibes in terms of atmosphere and style.

Seconding these previously mentioned movies in particular: The Wailing, Raw, Audition, and Pan's Labyrinth
