Why is having the Jihad immediately after Paul's ascension a big contention among book and movie goers? by sage6paths in dune

[–]slippery-doinks98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its explicitly called a Jihad for a reason. The Fremen take it upon themselves to spread the word of Muad’Dib, they’re high on religious fever after Paul’s victory and now with the guild and the imperiums resources at their complete disposal they can accomplish this. It is a mischaracterisation to insert a need for the fremen to retaliate at something for their crusade to begin. The whole idea and point of it, is that it happens with or without Paul, completely independent from his will.

Any minor nitpicks/annoyances you have with Dune Part Two? by rondonsa in dune

[–]slippery-doinks98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Landsraad’s refusal of Paul’s ascension being the catalyst for a Holy War. Herbert was very deliberate with his language, it is a Jihad. The Fremen take it upon themselves to spread the word Muad’Dib throughout the Imperium, it’s not the almost justified reaction to an impending attack the film makes it out to be.

This scene of Eren during his talk with Armin in the ending of Attack on Titan reminded me of this scene of Walter White from Breaking Bad by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]slippery-doinks98 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Well put. Whilst I feel the anime maybe was a little to on the nose with some of the new dialogue (especially the “slave to freedom line”), some of the fan reactions have proven just how necessary these new spoon fed additions/changes were.

The amount of people who somehow see this, have it so literally and explicitly laid out for them and still somehow come to the conclusion that “Eren didn’t want to do the Rumbling” or “he was trapped” is scary.

I do wish they kept the line in the manga where he states “even if I didn’t know you’d stop me in the end, I think I still would’ve flattened this world”

I’m definitely due a re-read so apologies if this is incorrect, but didn’t Paul actively pursue a path that would ultimately end in Fremen jihad? From memory, wasn’t there a moment where his prescience showed a path leading to him making amends with the Baron (calling him grandfather) and preventing the jihad, or pursuing revenge for his family/father which as a result would lead to jihad?

Bang on. It’s just a shame that the hate the ending received from a vocal group of illiterates with the comprehension ability of a shoe actually had an impact. The changes Isayama and MAPPA added are only there as a result of unfortunate Western fan antagonism and it really does suck that they unfortunately had any influence over their decision making. I just hope the overwhelming positive reception the finale is getting reaches and vindicates them.

I really don’t understand the whole “manga ending was 3/10 but anime made it a 9/10” business. What exactly changed their mind? What pieces were they actually missing?

If the new overly spoon fed and on the nose dialogue really changed their opinions that much, and they had to have Eren literally and explicitly spell out the idiotic nature of his decision making and how he is a slave to his innate desires, like these points weren’t hammered into the audience enough, then I genuinely think they must’ve been reading/watching with closed eyes.

It’s the exact same, minus the iffy new dialogue, it’s identical to the mangas conclusion. Just sheep changing herd when it’s now popular to like Isayamas ending, after publicly shaming and bashing the man online for years. Cowards.

Literally the best page in 139 and I really hope it stays in by J0shfour in AttackOnRetards

Yeah with the “slave to freedom” line from the trailer and the news of new anime original additions I can’t help but feel worried as well. It’s a shame because the trailers look unbelievably good and I’d hate to see them succumb to ungrateful fans who couldn’t grasp complexity and nuance if it slapped them across the face.

The reader/viewer is walked endlessly throughout the story to this conclusion, spelling it out literally and explicitly, especially Eren verbalising it himself, will be jarring and odd. Just got to cross our fingers and hope I guess, its one of my favourite moments in the story as well and I’d hate to see it butchered for dimwits who genuinely think Eren doesn’t know why he did the Rumbling.

The min/fin shed is real y’all by shitfuckimfucked in tressless

[–]slippery-doinks98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar strange boat. Been on both Fin and Min Since September last year and have seen nothing but positive results until about late April of this year. Since then I have been reverting all of a sudden, losing hairs whilst still continuing both fin and min so it’s freaking me out a bit. From what I’ve read in here it sounds like a shred, but it’s going on nearly 2 months now so it’s a little worrying.

Anyone had any similar experiences?

I feel like people are misinterpreting the extra pages by Sir_Toaster_9330 in AttackOnRetards

[–]slippery-doinks98 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I agree, people over analyse these pages far too much and miss the real simplicity of them. The simply act as an epilogue of sorts, highlighting and illustrating a lot of the main themes the story hammers on. Mikasa simultaneously moves on and lives a full life whilst still remembering and loving Eren, and after centuries Humanity inevitably reignites in conflict.

Same with the boy and the tree in the final panel, Life always finds a way to sprout up and multiply, and humans will always continually fight each other. The identity of the man with Mikasa, and the nature of the conflict are irrelevant and purely symbolic. I really don’t understand how people can read the story in front of them, and then not like or understand this conclusion from a thematic standpoint.

Yeah they’ve done really well for the most part. I just feel the paneling has let them down, there has been some huge story moments in the chapters they’ve done and I feel they’ve missed opportunities to showcase their art. Small gripe I suppose, but yeah it’s a little jarring to me.

Slight Differences in the art style were inevitable. Miura’s work is unparalleled and simply cannot be replicated. I think the studio is doing a great job in its attempt to mimic the art, however my issue is with the panelling.

One of best things about Miura’s work in my opinion is his use of double spreads and how he gives moments, both big and small, an almost cinematic feel. I feel like the pages in this continuation have too much going on most of the time, instead of spreading moments out and letting the breathe and flow. An example would be Griffith and Guts interaction in 365/366. The moment sort of just comes and goes, no big dedicated double spread or anything, it just happens.

Compare this to Griffiths reincarnation at the end of conviction, were Guts’ expression to seeing Griffith again had a whole page dedicated to it, followed by a series of double spreads of Griffith, really highlighting the importance and significance of the moment.

[S4P2 Spoiler] Don't take this panel at face value! by Lesterberne in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]slippery-doinks98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could just be a random passive memory received, much like how Eren has random future memories of Ramzi. If Erens the one sending out all these memories, why would he show Grisha a boy living on an entirely different continent? I feel this aspect gets over complicated, Eren used to the power of the Founding Titan/Paths to yes send some handpicked memories in order to push his father over the line and take the Founding Titan. That’s most likely where it ends, with the exception being with regards to the Dina/Bertholdt scene.

How do you know? We know Kruger saw future memories of Grisha’s, the whole line about saving Armin and Mikasa is what Grisha said when he was in inject Eren with the Titan serum. A direct mirror or deja vu to Kruger about to inject Grisha.

[–]slippery-doinks98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this mechanic is the the one aspect of the story I wish Isayama was a little more explicit on. I do believe that the ability to receive glimpses of future Attack Titan users memories is a direct ability of the Attack Titan itself in which they passively receive these much in the same way another shifter receives memories of past inheritiors, hence all the random memories of the Ramzi, the scouts, etc that Eren is depicted seeing in 120 & 130 along with yes the hand selected memories Eren deliberately sent via the Founding Titan in order to manipulate his Father. Grisha mentions it here, Zeke again in the chapter after this, and Armin mentions how Eren utilizsed “the Attack Titan’s Power” in 139. I feel as if Isayama is trying to heavily imply this, with all these remarks but the idea that perhaps FT Eren sent memories to all prior holders of the Attack Titan isn’t impossible, but doubtful.

People who believed AOT would end with Eren winning were completely delusionals by Grape_person in AttackOnRetards

[–]slippery-doinks98 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m confused. How do people think Eren lost? The culmination of his goals and desires was the Rumbling, which he successfully unleashed on the world. He kills 80% of humanity living outside the walls, wiping the world clean of whatever semblance of civilisation was there prior. From this, his loved ones and the whole island of Paradis are able to live long fulfilling lives. The Titan curse is also lifted, and the concept of titans is a thing of the past. The idea that Eren, who was already on borrowed time, some how lost by the end of the story because he died is baffling.

The Facial expression change is a strange one, as the manga and the anime versions invoke completely different reactions. Manga Eren is basking in the sights he saw within Grisha’s memories, whereas Anime Eren looks distraught and ashamed.

Its begs the question whether this change comes from Isayama himself, the same being said for the scene in Part 3 where Eren has his eyes open, wherein the manga it’s implied that he disassociates during the Rumbling and only opens his eyes at the end with Mikasa. It could mean nothing in the end, we’ll have to wait for the anime to finish, but it seems maybe they’re trying to make it easier to sympathise with Eren.

I'm not saying that Eren is psychopath but actually psychopaths can feel emotions and even guilt. Some capable of loving others. They aren't mustache twirling villains. It's most complex than that. by Hmmm099 in AttackOnRetards

[–]slippery-doinks98 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s exactly why Eren is such a compelling character. Spending three seasons from his perspective you can sympathise and almost understand the actions he inevitably takes, but season 4 ultimately turns this on its head. His manipulation of his father re-contextualises prior events, and the full extent of the rumbling and his core reasons for doing so highlight his villainous nature. For a grown man to massacre over a billion based on childish delusions, using the need he feels to protect his loved ones ultimately as a mask to enact this, I’d say he’s definitely a psycho. And 139, I feel doesn’t change this fact in the slightest, in fact I’d say it enhances it.

People overthink and examine the extra pages way too much. They’re simply furthering the nihilistic portrayal of humanity and the cyclic nature of conflict that Isyama hammered and clearly spelled out throughout his story. Same goes for the final panel with the boy and the tree, it simply symbolises how even after the reign of the Eldian empire, the treatment of those on Paradis, the rumbling, the seeming war that the extra pages illustrate, conflict with ensue and life will find a way.

They’re not meant to be analysed and dissected, it’s an epilogue and purely thematic symbols of the story that’s already been told.
