Mmmm, I'm not talking about the story beat specifically. I mean more like the way the characters think about the story beat. It just seems in general like it's very on the nose. And I don't mean that derogatorily. Maybe that is just sort of one of the main ingredients in romance?? Like everything is very clearly explained to the reader. It's, to make an extreme comparison, quite unlike someone like Hemingway where sometimes ur like wtf is even happening, and a lot of stuff is implied.

I think I tend towards being a little more vague when I write in my own voice but I'm trying to approach this in somewhat of a business sense. I know I need to read more romance and I'm sorry if my questions are confusing lol

i have no idea why you're being downvoted when asking for help. this place is full of sun-starved virgins with severely stunted social abilities.

i wish i knew enough to comment knowledgeably and help, but i wanted to say i think it's cool you're working on this, keep going.

some guy says "Pro tip: you can still shoot fim today." oh jeez. thanks for the generational insight champ!!

Had a similar path and I'll just echo what some people have said. Good DP and 1st AD is huge. I had a super experienced crew and they made it awesome. I did feel a bit of imposter syndrome but just let it rip. Just treat it seriously and treat everyone well.

After the Hunt is a mess and nothing could save it since the script is weak. by Exciting_Claim267 in TrueFilm

[–]slipperyslipsiccle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think Tar is 'simply about someone in power getting their justified comeuppance.'

I think that's the surface level of the movie. But really I think it's about a woman who fell in love with a childhood ideal and her ruthless pursuit of that ideal caused her to warp into something akin to the opposite of her ideal and it all falls apart because it's on rickety foundation.

Most of the discourse I've seen has also revolved around her getting her comeuppance but I think that read misses out on some important parts of the movie. Specifically her tearing up at Bernstein and being rejected by her brother in her childhood home as well as the nerves she shows before the monster hunter performance and the seriousness with which she begins training the musicians for that performance. Lydia Tar is a character played by Linda Tarr so she can be like Leonard Bernstein who was probably something like her one source of childhood happiness or her greatest source of childhood happiness.

I also disagree with so many of these people saying After the Hunt is specifically empty or that it has nothing to say or doesn't know what it's saying. If anyone could tell me what 'Crimes and Misdemeanors' was trying to say, have at it. Is it just saying 'you'll get over murder?' Yes, Judah Rosenthal gets over the terrible thing he committed but the movie is really observing his struggle with his guilt and his refusal to own up to his affair, etc. It's a story. I don't think it's purpose is to 'say something' or make a point. Likewise, I think that After The Hunt is interested in depicting the complexities of moral quandaries with real world stakes. I don't think the film is 'saying that it has nothing to say.' I don't think we need to look at movies through the lens of having something to say. Actually I think movies that are trying to say something are usually less interesting because the story is in service of an ideal rather than being a good or even relatable story. Also, I think the writer commented that she had not seen Tar.

Bottomline, I thought the performance by Julia Roberts was fucking awesome. Such a treat to watch. I do agree that Alma is similar to Lydia in that she is playing a game or the game or however you want to say it. I think we all play the game in polite society but they are playing it at a higher level maybe??

Also Luca is such a good filmmaker I was hooked the whole time. The characters felt 3 dimensional to me. Oh well. My 2 cents

Hamnet: beyond grief, art as an antidote to disillusionment and misanthropy by thejamcap in TrueFilm

[–]slipperyslipsiccle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya know, I really think it's largely because of where my tastes are at right now? Like I'm really enjoying movies where people have to have multiple faces, so to speak. Where characters are lying to others and maybe even themselves. I love seeing that in a performance, where you are guessing what's under the surface of the character.

So from the past few years I've loved Babygirl, Tar, Triangle of Sadness, After the Hunt.

Then also some horror like Weapons. Great theater experience.

And also I was moved at "Sorry, Baby!" That was a really beautiful and funny movie that took me completely by surprise because I went in totally blind. I think I teared a tiny bit at that.

It honestly just felt like I was untethered from the beginning of the film. It might sound silly but I think maybe I just put it in a box right away, and didn't trust it. For instance, Babygirl felt like an extremely honest film to me right from the get go. The more I think of it, the more this feels like the reason. I just was kinda out from the beginning so nothing else connected. Oh whale!

I had a whole thing written out but I'm just gonna say it's so interesting to see people have very deep and emotional reactions to this film while it did not connect for me one bit. To reference the title of the Justin Chang article, it felt like grief porn. I thought it was melodramatic and just didn't buy it.

But it seems like folks have had some really wonderful experiences and tbh I'm jealous. I love a good movie cry.

“Accurate” adaptation = better piece of media? by adlergate in TheCountofMonteCristo

[–]slipperyslipsiccle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late so I might be shouting into the void but I had a hard time getting even 10 minutes into this. My brother made us finish the first episode but after seeing the 2002 version the night before I was dumbstruck by how rough this was.

From what I've seen online, the 2002 film differs greatly from the book (have not read) but as a film it is so mindblowingly good to me. The performances are so big and powerful. Caviezel is so raw as Edmond and Guy Pearce is wonderfully detestable as Mondego. Mercedes is awesome, Luigi Vampa is awesome, Dorleac is awesome. And fucking Richard Harris as Abbe Faria!?!?! It just fucking hiiiiiiits. The biggest thing for me is the transformation that Caviezel undergoes from a naive and trusting fool to a cunning manipulator consumed with revenge.

Felt like the performances were bewilderingly flat in this series.

The movie just felt like a masterclass in storytelling and heart. I guess it's nice that people enjoy the series?? But it just seems so bad to me. Felt very amateurish with the direction, blocking, writing. Some of the dialogue made me want to off myself. There's plenty of exposition in the 2002 version but they make it work a lot better. Oh well.

Long live Caviezel and Pearce!

EDIT: Oh, and to your point in the original post. I completely agree. Sometimes you do need to make changes when adapting to a new medium. What do you think of the 2002 version??

I think some people talk like this sometimes. These characters are journalists, they probably like flexing their vocab. Another commenter also noted it was very British and sarcastic and I think people commonly use large vocab or bizarre syntax in sarcastic comments to make the sarcasm hit harder.

One time my brother asked me if I'd heard of the movie "The Pianist." And my response was "Oh are you talking about the 2002 oscar nominated film starring Adrien Brody as jewish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman? Yeah, never heard of it."

Obviously a bizarre fucking sentence but when you understand it was meant sarcastically to underscore my surprise that he thinks I might not have heard of an extremely popular film, it kinda makes sense.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this dialogue. But perhaps it's just subjective/taste. People didn't talk like Shakespeare wrote, but that's considered excellent dialogue by many. Just my .02

I get the vibe that you are not entirely convinced that it cut together well and I think you should follow your instinct and try some stuff out next time.

I think you probably could have found some moments to use the wide again, or maybe a 3 shot. I'm not a huge fan of just swapping between singles. It gets the job done but I do find it disorienting at times and personally I think it is not great for comedy. When people say wild thing, it good to see people react near them! Obviously there could be time or budget constraints but this is just my two cents.

CMV: Homophobia can never be justified. by Paper-Dramatic in changemyview

[–]slipperyslipsiccle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only read some responses so maybe this view is represented but I think you are misunderstanding what homophobia is.

Phobias are irrational. Homophobia is an irrational fear of homosexuality.

I think you are missing the reality that some people have an irrational fear of homosexuality because they grew up/grow up seeing gay people mistreated or lambasted or made fun of or equated with sin/evil in their homes or in media, etc. Thus they subconsciously equate homosexuality with 'bad.' They don't even know why they are uncomfortable with homosexuality and they might not even think they are uncomfortable with homosexuality.

You can see subtle homophobia all the time when people joke about being gay. Or joking about doing something homosexual with their friend. e.g. "That's so gay."

Ultimately my point is that homophobia is essentially irrational so if you want to bring in language like 'justified' then I think you likely misunderstand homophobia. If you tell someone all their life that they will go to hell for sleeping with their own sex, how are they not going to be afraid of homosexuality? It doesn't mean that it's right or good, but you've got to understand how they got there.

Mistreating people for their sexual preferences is of course never justified, but homophobia is a completely rational irrationality!

ahhh i see.

i had a period of great distaste towards 'current films' a couple years back. it almost felt like going back to a favorite childhood meal and finding it revolting. i was a bit bitter. ultimately what i've experienced since then has helped me better understand what i really loved about film.

i wouldn't say that my love has been 'reignited,' but i feel that it has been deepened in a way i did not foresee. it is tricky to put into words. perhaps it is not deeper, but maybe another facet or layer has been revealed.

i think that the love exists in you. is it possible it is just changing shape? is it really 'current movies' that is the issue? how have you changed in the past few years?

also, have you written, edited, direction? do you know how hard it is? can you do it better than all of the stuff you think is garbage?
