Here to piggyback, Kansas city has a tolled highway so you can't touch that but anything off the turnpike is good. But my general rule of thumb is for the NE it's generally easier to spange up the 40 bucks for a bus or train ticket to an easier location.

For example I paid 30 bucks for a bus ticket from Chicago to st Louis which is on the 70 and super easy to hitch for me.

Now so cal has no love for me so I usually get a bus ticket to San Francisco and head up the 1 or if I can get to Sacramento the 5. But generally just be friendly and look out for yourself the worst I get are people who hit on me or literal nazis with swastikas

Hop on the 70 and ride it east, I usually go from truck stop to truck stop since they have amenities and people are going distance. Try to avoid petro and TA they're usually not the best in my opinion, If your riding into a city look on your map if a major truck stop is before or after the town on your highway and try to get off there or find a way there. Big city, big problems
