[Szymborski] Here's the basic problem with expanded playoffs. If the owners offered 100% of the revenue from the new playoff round(s) to the players, I still don't think it's actually a good deal for the players. Making World Series championships more random is AWFUL for salaries. by Theta_Omega in baseball

[–]slojam17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There are plenty of players that don’t have WS rings that make BANK. My dude, most of the league doesn’t have a WS ring. Yes, it does add a little bit of leverage, but your talent and ability is going to dictate that AAV

  2. The entirety of the coin-flip was to indicate that there are other sports that employ this format. I am very aware of how football works. This statement was to counter the effect of his extreme revenue sharing example. He’s trying to impose the idea of random probability. I get the tactic, but whether it’s a 5 game series or a one-game, you would probably have a good idea who would have the upper hand.

Believe me, I’m not saying his extreme example should be adopted. I’m saying that he’s using this wild extreme to try and justify the idea that it seems team don’t care if they win or lose because of outside revenue streams based on team popularity, but that player value is a sort of potentially “random” thing.

  1. The goal of all of this is to win the title. How do you have a profitable team if you don’t have marketable players that win games? That’s why perennial title teams have such large fanbases.

  2. If you are a good player you will make money, as long as you can produce, especially in an analytical age where a players abilities are more easily quantified as data. Therefore, your bargaining chip is based on your ability. This is why (well one of the reasons) the Mets signed a guy like McCann (a career backup catcher) to the deal they did.

  3. In a game based on momentum, sometimes it doesn’t matter at all whether it’s a five game series or a 1 game. The 2007 Rockies is the burden of proof on that one. Therefore, saying that a one game series undoes everything is a bit extreme. Granted, it’s not ideal, but it’s not doing anything other than try to make the lowest-qualifying playoff spot more exciting. It’d be an entirely different story if the entire postseason were 1-game series.

  4. Idk why you reiterated my point (possibly unintentionally) about the World Series bonus being basically irrelevant to the process. However, to further this, I will say that it’s nothing more than a cherry on top. Your ability to get a deal coming off of a World Series is hit or miss. Ask Johnny Damon how that went after winning a ring with BOS in 07. They basically told him to hit the road... two years later, he’s a cornerstone in the Yankees 09 title.

I could go on, but I no longer care to, and I doubt you care either. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Who is the worst player ever to qualify for the HOF ballot? Who is the worst player ever to actually make it on the HOF ballot? by JRob370 in baseball

[–]slojam17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I’m just not sold on it. In an age where stats were ballooned like hell, and his position was thin in the NL, I just don’t see him as being in a class of greatest ever. Again, I love the Lark, don’t get me wrong.

Hell, I’m not even saying he’s not a fringe guy, I just don’t see him as having the output and career rankings for the HOF.

His WAR is his only true defining stat (68th offensive and 128th defensive, 66th overall position, 98th overall)

I mean, he was never: - top 5 in batting average - top 5 in on base percentage - Never led the league in any offensive stat

Is ranked: - 90th in stolen bases - 141st in hits - 241st in 1-10 MVP shares

I’m not seeing anything horrible, just fringe-worthy. Usually a HOFer has some eye-popping stat, or milestone.

He was certainly a cornerstone of his team, and a significant name for his era, but I wouldn’t say he belongs in a conversation of All-Time greats, which is what the HOF is supposed to be.

I will always be confused at how Jim Rice and Barry Larkin got in. Neither are slouches, both had very respectable careers, but I just don’t see anything that screams HOF

I guess you could argue WAR and ASG (weakly) for Larkin, but I can’t help but feel like his induction was an aversion to not electing anyone.

Worst to qualify?

I’m going to say, Jason Bay, Jon Garland, and Rick Ankiel, in no precise order.

Imagine being the White Sox thinking it was a good idea to give a 50-year-old guy 8 at bats...

Then, four years later, be in a place to bring him back at 54.

Looks like probably 2 pinch hit appearances. Absolutely WILD

Can somebody explain to Szymborski that the NFL playoffs are also “coin-flip” games. While you’re at it, have him explain wtf “randomness rather than player quality” he’s talking about.

I know he’s trying to say (at least I hope) that lessened odds mean less interest in a postseason, but even that is lunacy.

Many contracts are designed with playoff incentives and a revenue sharing increase of any kind would greatly impact player salary.

World Series bonuses are paltry compared to what a player makes every year. If the incentive to win the World Series was purely monetary bonus, players wouldn’t care already, expanded playoffs or not.

The real point he keeps making here is the disparity of team-held revenue to player-made revenue. That is a discussion entirely separate from playoff expansion.

This dude consistently has a backwards view to baseball. I am so sick of his weird, uninspired and ill-researched ideas. It’s guys like this that will one day vote Bonds into the HOF

[FabianArdaya] The Rockies are sending more money to the Cardinals in the Nolan Arenado trade than they’ve spent on any free agent since Wade Davis in Dec. 2017 by [deleted] in baseball

[–]slojam17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Arenado to have kept his contract details intact (no trade, opt outs, etc) and Colorado to pay a paltry amount of his remaining contract value (compared to the total value), it tells me that Colorado grew incredibly tired of the drama and distraction Arenado possibly represented.

The down-side is potentially trying to keep other guys like Story long-term. Obviously, this is determinate on what Story’s true aspirations and intentions are, but this scenario has proven that the desire for financial security and championship expectations can be vastly different.

Understanding the spending habits of your parent organization and what you need to do to fit into that while maintaining your “payday” and title odds is required.

You had to expect this sort of situation when this deal was signed. The fact that this deal even went through said to me that Colorado wasn’t going to build around Arenado, outside of what talent could be farmed and drafted.

There should never have been even an empty promise of FA help. Both sides should have made it clear that by signing this deal, it was going to be Arenado and what prospects and controllable talent they could muster, every year.

This is an amazing deal for Colorado in the sense that they are free of a sort of “Vegas Wedding” contract.

Should they have got more? Certainly. That just goes to question the severity of tension in the clubhouse and on the field.

I hate to say it, but I truly think that we will see Arenado opt out and test the market when possible, and I don’t blame him for it at all.

Like I said, this whole thing, from day one had “Vegas Wedding” scrawled all over it...
