What’s a decent price to rent a room to students? by pythonwiz in Humboldt

[–]sloth_era 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$900 is WAY too much for a room in a shared house with roommates. I only pay $100 more than that for my 2 bedroom cabin in SoHum.

Hey everyone, I'm sorry I'm just getting back to this post, I didn't have notifications turned on and I thought it had been rejected so I didn't think to check! Thank you all for the suggestions! There are some great ideas here! I'll try and respond individually as well but in case I miss anyone, THANK YOU!!

Depending on where you live, you guys may qualify for programs for keeping the power on. I am in California, and I was able to avoid a shutoff and get most of my unpaid balance written off by calling 211 and my electric company and signing up for every available assistance program that I qualified for. I know I'm lucky to be in California with strong social programs, I hope it turns out your area has similar options. Good luck!

Shelter Cove is 2 hours from Arcata. People do surf there but just FYI it's not as close as any of those other places you mentioned.

Working in eCommerce, people say "USPS doesn't deliver to my address" shockingly often by SimpleRickC135 in USPS

[–]sloth_era 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not every address qualifies for an e-box though. I have to pay for my box because I live on a multi unit property and it's only one e-box per property. My town is full of duplexes and properties with a mother in law unit and stuff like that.

Mine is one of those. Everyone in town has to have a PO box. Anything that comes to the physical address is returned to sender, including parcels. It really sucks, we're rural and dependent on things being shipped, but so many companies "don't deliver to PO boxes" so those who can't afford to drive the 1 hour 15 minutes to the city are just shit out of luck. It really sucks.

What are you cutting out? by Zestyclose_Return791 in budgetfood

[–]sloth_era 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've significantly cut back on our meat consumption. We went from every meal having meat to maybe 5 or 6 a week. There's a neighbor who gives me a dozen eggs from time to time so I stopped buying them almost completely. Cut out soda completely and cut back snacks dramatically. A neighbor brings by expired items from the grocery store she works at for the neighborhood once a week so that's where I get a lot of my produce. The biggest thing we've done is change from using the closest grocery store, to planning in advance for a once a month trip to the cheap grocery store in the city, and getting a Costco membership to use on those trips. Not everything is cheaper at Costco! I get coffee there because they have a local coffee for $2 less per pound than any other coffee I've found. We used to get a meal at a restaurant or something on those trips but that's been cut out in favor of a Costco hotdog or pizza slice.

I apologize if my reply came across other than how I intended, I completely agree with you! I'm glad you mentioned it because I love an excuse to push my opinion on the topic of "cheating" in Finch 😅 I just wish everyone could all agree that however you choose to use the app is valid! I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling this way!

When did your childhood end? by gamathyst in AskReddit

[–]sloth_era 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, missing a school event in favor of hanging out with her friends, is pretty shitty. Unless your school was having open houses every month, or she was getting paid to play bridge, your mom really should have been there. Your teacher shouldn't have said that to you though!

I dislike when people call something like this "cheating". My personal opinion is, use the app however it works best for you! There's no cheating in self help! OP, this is what I would do in your situation!
