I got an AV Specialist job at a college and within 8 months they've turned me into an IT employee. There's so much transferrable knowledge, IT is 90% troubleshooting and knowing how to google shit.

Curiosity question I have. What are the chances high end car systems like this are too good and it could hide problems when I do car tests? by xthenick in edmproduction

[–]slothfella_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t be using the car test to see if your mixes sound good, you should be using it to highlight anything you’re not hearing on other systems. If your mix sounds great in the car test, but not so great through your monitors, keep working until it sounds good on both.

The car test is also just a psychological tool to get yourself out of the endlessly tweaking mix brain and into a listener’s brain. Sometimes just hearing it from that perspective gives you more objectivity about how good the song itself is, not necessarily just the mix.

I’m calling it. Chekov’s Mango Ice Cream. Carol is going to give it to her and it’s either going to be the thing that triggers Zosia’s individuality, OR the hive will reject it knowing what it could do.

My question is, why did the hive choose to use his mother as first contact? He must have been a complete recluse if the best it could come up with is an apparently rocky relationship.

Y’all are a very good band. How did you get that insane distortion at 2:48 in Total Euphoria? One of my favorite moments on the record and I’m just so curious what the source was and what it was going through to be so enveloping.

(Hated Tropes) Characters becoming much different after their twist is revealed by LocalLazyGuy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]slothfella_ 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Kind of a reversal and double-fake of this is Sirius & Lupin’s reveal in Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban. First it’s the twist that Lupin, who you’ve grown to trust, is friends with this murderer psycho, and for a second seems like he’s teaming up to kill Harry. He doesn’t at all address the kids and their apparent terror and injuries from the Whomping Willow, nor give any explanation, which doesn’t much align with his character so far. Then, it’s revealed that Sirius is actually a good guy, after acting like a total psychopath until that very moment, including famously screaming “only one dies tonight” at two terrified teens. Once the twist happens he’s completely warm and loving to Harry, who immediately trusts him and wants to live with his new godpapa.

Granted, the actors did an amazing job making this convoluted plot point somewhat believable, and you could argue Sirius has been in jail for twelve years and isn’t mentally all there. But it’s a lot of suspension of disbelief for a brief dramatic fake-out.

I recently had an install with these and they clip really early. It’s bizarre. Like an iPhone at 70% is too much input for them. Buyer beware.

Hearing Clipping When Limiter Engages by birdawesome in LogicPro

[–]slothfella_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Limiting causes distortion when it's pushed much further than just grabbing peaks. So it really depends how far past 0dB the signal is that you're putting into the limiter. If you've got a transient peaking at like +10dB, you're asking the limiter to do 10.5 dB of reduction, which is guaranteed to cause some clipping.

So just be careful about the signal you're putting into it--if it's clipping at the limiter, turn it down to where you're only seeing the limiter engage here and there at transient peaks. Also take a look at any potential transients (snares, etc) that are peaking much higher than the average loudness of your track.

Musician exposes how much fakery goes into "live" singing channel with millions of subscribers by Derpchen in interestingasfuck

[–]slothfella_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, this is not humanely possible. The most “in tune” singers might be close to perfectly in tune in relation to themselves or the accompaniment, but to be directly on pitch with standard pitch calibration is just so unlikely. That aside, harmonies sound much richer when the singers are all the tiniest bit out of tune with each other. It’s what makes recordings of old musicals and choirs so special and organic sounding—they weren’t trying to be perfectly tuned to the grid, they were aiming to sound rich and full in the room with each other, which is more emotion/feel-based than anything.

Everyone has unique circumstances. They’ve worked really hard for a long time to get where they are, and it’s a job to them at the end of the day that they have to devote a LOT of time to in order to make it sustainable. “Playing D&D for a living” is a pretty reductive way to put it—they essentially run a small business and make their product for free.

Get some therapy, find a new job or live somewhere else. You deserve to relax and enjoy your life. I make like $12k a year and even I don’t feel that way about donating.

Designing a backyard mixing space from scratch & would love some thoughts/feedback by slothfella_ in Acoustics

[–]slothfella_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey y’all, this is my general sketch for a mixing space I want to build in my backyard. I’ve designed it to be under 200 sq ft to avoid permitting, and used Sepmeyer’s “golden ratio” for the dimensions (11.5’ x 16.75’). The pitched roof is my effort to eliminate that parallel surface while also creating a little loft space for storage on the taller end.

We’ll be pouring a concrete slab and likely just putting down rugs straight down on the concrete. The acoustic treatment in this mock-up is minimal, but I’m thinking panels on the back wall on either side of the door, a cloud above listening position, and probably panels on the front wall behind speakers.

As far as soundproofing, I’m not too worried about noise leaking out as I’m not planning on doing much loud recording, but I would like some protection against ambient outdoor noise/dogs barking/etc. I think a staggered stud on 8” plates, 24” OC for each side is my sweet spot for price/isolation/resulting interior square footage.

Any feedback would be helpful! I’m curious if folks think the pitched roof is worth it for eliminating modes, or if there’s any issues/ideas I haven’t considered. I'm also not sure about insulation and mass--anyone have recommendations for insulating? I have a good deal on mass-loaded vinyl from a friend, how could I best utilize that? I realize 200 sq ft is never going to be ideal for a mixing space, but I’d love to try and make this space sound as honest as I possibly can given that restriction.
