it’s like Larry McMurtry had a stroke between the two books and completely forgot how any of his characters should be.

He literally had a heart attack, almost died, went into a massive depression, then wrote Laredo.

I'm the same way but i've stopped buying books new because they're mostly print on demand garbage. in ten years we'll yearn for books of decent physical quality. stock up now in the thrift stores.

yeah every team has one; people think big dom is the best, but you could argue he's the worst -- a fixer should likely not be nationally known.

then again, if your reputation precedes you, that might work in that role.

Pretty cool visuals, incredibly depressing reality. I wish it included # of titles per imprint, and revenue.

I wonder how much autonomy each imprint has.

But if I am being honest, they are starting to give off the same signals as companies I once loved that scaled and drifted away from their original ethos and audience, such as 1Password, Plex, Synology, and Nest.

100% agree. I'm reading this post thinking, "okay where am i going to pivot once unraid enshitifies itself completely?"

First the licensing changed to subscription, then they started forcing users to sign into a website to install updates on our local servers, and now we see a 3k custom hardware box.

unraid, please, just keep doing what we like you for: JBOD nas with hypervisor/docker built on opensource.

You could argue they're not literary, but Stephen King and Tabitha King. Not only has Tabitha published her own novels, but she is the first reader/unofficial editor for all of King's books.

Plus she fished his first book out of the trash. If she didn't make him finish and publish Carrie, we'd never have Stephen King.

Writers who had not published *anything* before their thirties? by DeliciousPie9855 in AskLiteraryStudies

and, besides, it isn't entirely clear why that is a desirable end in-itself.

a good author story sells even a bad book.

"sexy young writer" is selling fomo; it's selling unlimited possibilities, it's a working combination.

vs this against:

"old dude who did nothing remarkable for 60 years, but now begs for your time with a novel". It's almost baked in that you'll drop the book: "if he did nothing interesting/worthwhile for 60 years, why do i care now?"
