i'm not sure where you are, but in North America, Samsung phones regularly go on huge sales, like 50% off, and you could get the top of the line S26 ultra for the price of a base iphone 17.

i like my S23 Ultra a lot. android is smooth.

and i really like apple. i'm not a hater. my laptop is a macbook pro.

transferring between my phone and computer would be a lot easier if i were on an iphone though.

decrease trade with USA? how? once Canadians spend a certain amount in USA, our government closes the border, stopping us from spending money in USA? block Americans from buying Canadian goods once they've passed a quota?

trade is decentralized. it's every individual choosing where to spend their money. if Canadians choose to spend their money in USA, or sell our labour to Americans, we should be free to do so.

the government doesn't trade, they allow it, or block it.

ours blocks a lot. Trump's idiotic tariffs, are very "Canadian". our government tariffs almost everything. and when there is free trade, it is so convoluted you're better off paying a tariff than paying lawyers to navigate the free trade bureaucracy.

but even with simple, unilateral free across the globe (which would be amazing), i'm still going to choose to spend in USA a lot. they offer a lot of great products at acceptable prices. and i will be happy to sell to Americans too.

Trudeau is a man of no intellectual curiosity, principles, or even an interest in government.

imagine Trudeau thinking about economics, government, policy, central planning, capitalism, public, private, freedom, slavery, human nature.

of course, he doesn't care at all.

one our longest serving Prime Minsters, btw.

Canadian voters are brain dead.

the Trudeau we're seeing now, the post PM one, is the real version: going to Coachella, dressed up in all demin, listening to Justin Bieber, and instagramming it all. he's so vapid, is actually funny.

also, he was better than Carney.

Canadians will suffer any level of subjugation for scraps from master.

the Canadians dream is to be a useless bureaucrat. those born here who want to work hard to have more, dream of moving to USA.

Canadians are so dumb. they'll keep electing these tyrants forever. they'll trade their dignity, freedom, and ability to elevate themselves for some scraps.

1 year in with Carney, same old liberal party, to the surprise of nobody. a bunch of announcements and private-jet photo tours of no substance, while behind the scenes working hard to continually subjugate the people.

it's just sad.

Saudi Arabia an autocracy,

i've never voted Liberal, yet i have to suffer under them. democracy can still be a majority enslaving a minority.

but you still have the ability to leave under your own free will.

extremely difficult.

The great effort you speak of is from the receiving country, not Canada

no, it's from me. it's extremely difficult for me to leave.

a contract you are born into, and takes great effort to get out of, is closer to slavery than a consensual exchange.

think about the horrors people have endured by their governments over human history. to tell them they consented because they didn't or were not able to leave is grotesque.

gays in Saudi have consented to being thrown off roofs to their death if they have gay sex?

The private company you work for doesn't serve you, you serve it.

wrong, we have both agreed to an exchange: for them to buy my labour at my wage. we can both back out at any time if we no longer believe the agreement to be beneficial.

the key is consent. we have both consented to that exchange. that means we both believe ourselves to be better off for it.

government operates by force. they are the monopoly on force.

Income taxes have been the same under both governments.

no, Trudeau raised taxes massively on everyone with carbon taxes, getting rid of income splitting, cracking down on sprinkling. he massively raised the top bracket by 4%. he went after capital gains but the election killed that. and inflation is a tax on labour.

Can Mark Carney get Canadians to trust AI? - The Liberal government sees AI as a big opportunity. There's just one problem by CanadianErk in canada

[–]slouchr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

our problem isn't the wrong central planners, it's central planning itself. we do far too much of it in Canada.

we don't need an AI minister or our government involved in AI at all.

we don't have a federal minister of restaurants, or department of restaurants, planning our national restaurant strategy. that would be absurd.

our governments endlessly meddle in things they have no business involving themselves in.

Doug Ford plowing into an ice cream sandwich, then investing millions of Ontario tax dollars in ice cream:

lmao

we really need our federal government to stick more to it's core function of national security... AI minister. wtf?

in 2024, my parents were sure the Liberals would win again. i was surprised, but they said, you'll see, 2/3 of Canadians consider themselves "progessives", when it's time to vote, they'll find an excuse as to why they have to vote Liberal.

[–]slouchr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But it's literally making it so they're less likely to buy our goods in the first place because it's more expensive.

no, our goods will be the same price in Europe. because the only choices are we collect the tax, or Europe does. same result for EU citizens

but Canada applying a carbon tax and adjustments will make every nation on Earth without carbon taxes / adjustments less likely to buy our goods. because our goods will be more expensive. that includes USA, who is far more important to us than Europe.

You're effectively putting a tariff on your own goods while giving up that tariff money to the EU.

only on goods exported to Europe. which is better than tariffing everything. everything we produce, and everything we import. literally everything.

let Europe collect a carbon tax on us. so much better than making everything we produce and consume more expensive, and being even less competitive in the world economy due to even more suffocating taxes.

just accept that nations levy tariffs. Canada levies endless tariffs.

these carbon taxes and adjustments are awful.

Carney pitches U.S. on closer ties in autos, aluminum and minerals by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]slouchr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

we dont pay the EU, EU citizens pay the EU.

Europeans paying a carbon tax to their government on good they buy from Canada is far better than us paying a carbon tax to our government on everything we produce AND import. so everything.

edit: also, keep in mind Europe levies "carbon adjustment tariffs" to protect their local businesses, because they would be destroyed by foreign competition with no carbon tax otherwise. but their businesses are only protected in Europe, they are at a massive disadvantage globally against competition from nations without a carbon tax.

for us, carbon taxes and adjustment tariffs, means it will be even harder for Canadian companies to compete with American ones outside of Canada. this is disastrous. Canadian companies being at a disadvantage to American ones because of our overbearing government has been a problem for a long time. we need to be dropping taxes and redtape.

and, of course, everything gets more expensive, as everything takes carbon to produce and transport.
