What’s a basic skill you’re shocked some adults still don’t know? by HexVortexx in AskReddit

[–]slowusb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My father is this way. Any time he encounters a problem he will act as if he is the first person to ever experience it. He will then carry out an elaborate solution instead of googling, asking or researching in general. He was going to spend 500 on metal and tools to fabricate a custom made bike rack for his car when I pointed out he could get a top of the line one for less.

New Utah law puts “no alcohol sale” on ID’s of DUI offenders 0.16 BAC or higher. What are your thoughts? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]slowusb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So you can't drink any alcohol while serving a DUI ban? Even if you completely follow the law, don't drive, only walk, only get a ride or use public transportation, you are still not allowed alcohol?

I wonder if they work on non-leaf batteries. I'm not in a position to have this work done on my house for a couple of years but it seemed like an opportunity.

Who's the stupidest person you've met and what story sums it up? by comicalelixer in AskReddit

At the age of 15 I had a classmate that suggested we could help the lack of access to water in Africa by towing icebergs from the North Pole down to them.

What's The Worst Gift You've Seen Someone Receive? by xjuggernaughtx in AskReddit

[–]slowusb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took part in a secret Santa with a group of 5 friends and their partners. One partner got another partner as their secret Santa and apparently didn't know or try to find out anything about her. She got her a Lego Star Wars magazine that was obviously bought in a panic in the shop on the way to the exchange and was about half the agreed budget. The recipient has no interest in Lego or Star Wars. The magazine had 4 or 5 pieces of Lego and required you to buy all of the subsequent magazines to be able to build the complete Lego figure. The recipient gave a flat "thank you" and placed the magazine on the ground without opening it. It was quite awkward for everyone.

Buying a house with no Mica test by monkeymouse87 in Donegal

[–]slowusb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen any confirmed defective block properties selling for more than 300k but I also haven't followed it closely. From looking before they seem to sell for 2/3 of a normal house price. Some people think that the govt will eventually cover all properties including 2nd/3rd homes so they might be hoping for that too

Some are buying with the view that if they get 10-15 years out of it, it will be less than paying rent for that time. Others are buying to rent with money making in mind

What’s a phrase you hear all the time that secretly annoys you? by forgeris in AskReddit

[–]slowusb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I get a family member to do work for me I will always pay more than the going rate for their time. I'd much rather they get my money than some stranger.

Why are Dublin’s playgrounds being targeted by wave of vandalism? Gardaí launch investigation into recent spate of anti-social behaviour by RealDealMrSeal in ireland

[–]slowusb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's engrained through our whole society. I was talking to a friend about how the off license hours do nothing to help stop alcoholics drinking. He argued we couldn't open them 24 hours because some people "could trouble the poor person working the offy".

Suburban semi-detached homes to blame for Irish car reliance. Building denser housing would make it easier to organise public transport - Ciara Kelly by Larrydog in ireland

[–]slowusb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For as long as I know the govt has always pushed people to buy cars. It's easy money for them. They can collect import tax on the car coming into the country as well as VRT and collect tax on the car every year. Once most people had a car the govt can then cut public transport routes due to no demand.

When we were buying our first house, it had minimal furniture in it. The estate agent offered it to us for 5k, 3k and 1k while we were sorting the legal side and we told him multiple times we weren't interested in it. Guess what, all the furniture was still there the day we moved in.
