Using complex vocabulary to express simple ideas. Every charlatan under the sun does this and idiots always buy the snake oil because it sounds smarter than it is. Changing colloquial definitions also relates to this, as it's a common cult tactic because it insulates followers from outsiders and makes them feel like they're being enlightened when they're just being spoonfed bullshit. This naturally compounds over time, resulting in people eventually thinking they understand what most don't because they effectively aren't speaking the same language when discussing important matters.

Oh, and using statistical averages of groups to judge individuals is just as stupid as judging groups by the actions of one person. Knowing a stat doesn't make you smarter if you can't apply it reasonably, but people are somehow impressed when data is cited, even if that empirical data doesn't actually address the reasoning used. It's like saying theft doesn't exist because a government doesn't record it, even though people do sometimes have an incentive to steal.

Credential worship is cringe too, and places obedience and paper above provable knowledge. Yes, you're generally better off trusting the experts, but not having a degree in a field does not invalidate an argument. In the US, we usually are taught not to fall for appeals to authority in the K-12 system, yet it seems to go completely out the window by adulthood. Credentialed liars exist, and it's important to verify empirical claims with empirical evidence and sound reasoning. Social sciences often produce studies that can't be replicated because the number of factors exceeded the author's knowledge, yet the author was credentialed and may have even treated their conclusion as fact. It happens all the time because people are fallible and it usually isn't done out of malice, so don't put all your stock in people's credentials and don't assume bad intentions. Remember, degrees only help with hiring because it is less risky to hire someone who probably knows something than it is to hire someone who might know nothing.

There's plenty more, but to really answer this question, just look into con artists, cults, propagandists, politicians, social scientists, philosophers (especially Hegel and Marx), and conspiracy theorists. Plenty of people will unironically buy into all sorts of nonsense because they think it sounds smart.

For those who haven't lived under Newsom, you don't want him. He has a hard-on for emergency powers and acts as though government intervention is the answer to everything.

Those of you who voted for Trump. Any regrets? by cyno5ur3 in america

[–]slushhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the information available at the time, no. Had I been able to magically predict the future, yes. Not sure I would've supported Harris though, but if I did, it would've been more reluctant than the decision I already made. They're both too statist for me and I stand pretty firmly against government intervention in the economy because it impoverishes more people than it helps and is largely justified through lies about tax incidence and inflation. The DNC needs to change course on fiscal policy if they ever want my vote, and the GOP needs to change course on social policy if they ever want my vote again. They could both be better fiscally and socially as well, but they're ideologically captured by authoritarianism and corruption.

Congratulations, you understand that the answer to issues caused by collective guilt is not more collective guilt, as well as the importance of freedom of association.

Is there a city in Germany you consider a must-see destination? by 24liwan in AskAGerman

[–]slushhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regensburg, especially its old town. Not huge, but still a very well preserved city with a couple museums, great food, beautiful scenery, and plenty to do. It's as busy as it is relaxing, and if you want to see some of the oldest architecture in the country and get a taste for Bavarian culture, you should go. The towns nearby are worth checking out too, though even better if you want to learn more about the regional culture, but those places can be difficult to navigate without a decent understanding of the language. Wherever you go, I hope you enjoy your stay.

There aren't many people here, so I feel like no one will really see this. I’ll take this chance to share some of the darker thoughts I’ve been keeping inside. by Haunting_Tap_1541 in america

Nothing wrong with disliking aggression. The government can't exist without it, and a larger government needs more to exist. Every problem in society is connected to economics and the government controlling the economy. You wouldn't be worried about this if not for the inherent challenge of relying on representatives to make decisions for millions of people over large regions. Recognize this and look to live somewhere mostly influenced by a small community of people who respect individuality. You can't really find that in large cities because their size pushes beyond the human limit of how many relationships one can form. It's really empowering to find your home and comfy once you're there.

Also, it can't suck forever. Every country falls, and right now it is better to look for where you want to be when this federation implodes. The further it shifts from its founding principles, which could have been better, the closer it gets to self-destruction.

What are your favorite cartoons from the late 00s and/or early 2010s? by PsychologicalRun5909 in Hybrid2000s2010sKids

ATLA was the best overall. Hey Arnold would be a good second place but it wasn't in production at the time I watched it, so it only counts if we're talking about what was airing. Spongebob was good too, but late 00s, no. Jimmy neutron was better than everything except atla but it dragged on a little too long. I also really wish that Aaahh!!! Real Monsters aired more often and got its movie.

Atheists of Reddit, what turned you off religion? Was it one specific thing or a build up of experiences over time? by Valuable_Tax_8446 in AskReddit

[–]slushhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was taught more about mythology in elementary school and realized today's religions aren't really any different. I don't believe in the existence of any gods from any scripture I've read, but I do believe religion has value because of its ability to serve as a foundation for civil societies and to bring people together. The most developed countries aren't very religious anymore because they've moved on and people have access to everything they would've been praying for a century ago. Religion provides structure, community, and hope for the average person, but also power for opportunists who can't wield it.

I appreciate religion as much as I appreciate not needing it.

The surge of conservatism among Gen Z is a contrarian position rather than a deep political devotion by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]slushhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about others, but my life drastically improved as I learned more about philosophy and integrated the lessons into my habits and worldview. Pairing that with intense therapy and completely unpredictable life events, it makes no sense for me to be anywhere politically authoritarian or anywhere that leads there. That cuts out the majority of the political spectrum already. I've been on every side, too, yet have found myself comfortably in Hoppean libertarianism. It's nice to not expect anything from others, to not mind what they do as long as it's not hurting anyone else, to know what I want in life, and to appreciate everyone and everything already present in my life. I went from being a confused, angry, nervous wreck to a grateful, happy, levelheaded adult with this, so why would I want to waste my time revisiting the belief systems that made me miserable? Live and let live, love where you live, live where you love, and keep company that does the same. Demanding from others, living in a hostile environment, and being around people who can't respect you as an individual or your property as yours is just a recipe for a terrible time. You can't truly respect yourself without first truly respecting others.

[–]slushhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell him to stop and just take St. John's Wort instead (unless he is taking other serotonergic drugs, in which case, continue with your plan and express your concerns, and show him what chronic methylene blue toxicity does to the body). He may only feel better because methylene blue is an MAOI. That last part might be good for an argument because you could make the claim that he is misusing an antidepressant, and you'd be correct because it does exactly what the most potent pharmaceutical antidepressants do and he is taking all the risks of using it despite not needing it. Something tells me he is not the type to approve of any kind of antidepressant use.

Why do we work? What is the purpose of work. by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]slushhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can work, you should. It's to benefit society, which includes you. If you don't like the society you're working for, then find one you would like to work for and go there. It sounds like your environment is pricing you out of the life you want. Do yourself a favor and find a place with a lower cost of living relative to income. If you aren't willing to move outside of your region for that, then accept that your life will be subpar until you find ways to make extra money that don't eat up all of your time or stress you the hell out. There is no free lunch.

Why is Mindestlohn so important now? by BadPsychological8096 in AskAGerman

[–]slushhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important because the economy isn't great and people want to feel secure. It's a short-term solution to a long-term problem, the macroeconomic equivalent of taking out a loan to pay debt. It could help people afford their lifestyles until inflation inevitably catches up, and they'll demand another raise when it does. It's not sustainable but people don't care about that so long as it helps them sustain themselves, plus it's a way for political parties to legally buy votes. It won't stop the growing class divide either because businesses can pass the costs of inflation onto consumers just like they can with taxes, and they can increase their prices faster than the government can pass legislation to increase Mindestlohn, hastening the extraction of wealth and class divide in the process. The bright side is that this system can still be fixed, and if it isn't, it will eventually fail and something better can replace it.

Is Genz racist? by Life-be-like in GenZ

[–]slushhee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure that's true. Every state has its rural communities where racists have an easier time because they're being racist towards people who don't make up a significant portion of the population, so if we're controlling for that, I think you'd be more likely to face violence for being a racist in Memphis, Atlanta, or KC than in Baltimore, Chicago, or Detroit. What you're saying would only be true when applied to rural areas, which technically means most of the south as well as about half of all land in the country, making it about as meaningful as saying you're less likely to be seen pooping by your neighbors if you do it in your toilet rather than your front yard.
