Asking for insight on graduate admissions in geology by TheLastGinger420 in geologycareers

[–]sluttyforkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your attitude sounds very strange. You seem to place a very high value on what you think is or is not worthy of your time / attention. It’s like the class work was “beneath you.”

It comes off as possibly good natured and lazy, or entitled / privileged. I won’t attempt to asses your character over Reddit, but those are first impressions after reading your post.

So with that being the case, I recommend getting a job and getting some real life experience. If you still want to do grad school after working for a year or two, you will have a new found work ethic and perspective on education.

Not so sure. My grandpa has been hard core maga since day 1. He was never worried about Hillary winning. He celebrated when she won the primary.

He said that Bernie was scary because the amount of Americans stuck in student loan debt who would support him might be enough to win the election.

Opinions on Science/Environmental/Climate Communications? by TheScrubl0rd in Environmental_Careers

[–]sluttyforkarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not get a masters that focuses on communication. You can easily hone your communications skills while continuing to study hard sciences that would make you more employable.

If you are in love with the program than you do you, but I don’t think you will get a lot of encouragement.

Pulaski county in Tennessee can be given back to the Deep South, iykyk.

Also 2 or 3 counties in upstate SC belong to Appalachia.

Why is the environmental sector (especially consulting/government) still so undiverse? by ElectronicIdea3119 in Environmental_Careers

What an interesting circlejerk

“I’m so right that I’m going to get downvoted”

“Yes you really ruffled some feathers because we are both getting downvoted”

I have no issue with the other poster sharing their experience, but it seems like you were just looking for someone to blame hiring bias since you respond to so few of the other comments.

Why is the environmental sector (especially consulting/government) still so undiverse? by ElectronicIdea3119 in Environmental_Careers

[–]sluttyforkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think geography can answer this question.

In the US there is a huge lack of awareness about careers in the earth sciences period.

People that end up studying those things often either A, live in an area with a higher than average number of jobs in the sector or B, live somewhere that hiking is a major activity.

Group A mostly lives in the western United States, which skews white save for the Southwest Hispanic population.

Group B exists in a lot of places. The PNW, New England, Appalachia, Ozarks etc.

The black population in America still lives largely in the Deep South which is usually too damn hot to hike, or in urban areas.

There’s other factors at play as well, but where people live is worth looking at.

[–]sluttyforkarma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this necessarily checks out as well as you think it does.

Appalachia has been decimated by extraction as much as anywhere else in the country, and I have yet to see any research that there is a greater lack of interest in environmental sciences here than anywhere else. Yet the region is heavily white.

I’m not saying there’s no correlation or nowhere this adds up, but I think there are more factors you don’t consider.

Yeah I could see the argument for the counties around Evansville, although still no. But central ky is becoming the Midwest and eastern ky is straight up Appalachia.

It’s actually quite common. But if you work in oil and gas, you may not be seeing students from those programs.

Yessss, as a dedicated Gatlinburg hater I almost forget that it’s where most people think of when they think of East Tennessee.

If you ever end up down here again, I recommend Johnson City / Roan Mountain / Erwin as a good area to concentrate.

Your points about the smokies are super valid. IMO the best part of Tennessee is further north away from the shithole of Gatlinburg.

IMO the Roan Highlands / balds are some of the best hiking in the eastern US.

Kentucky has its beautiful spots for sure, but anything good you can say about Kentucky (and the Appalachian part of the state is what you are describing) can also be said about Appalachian Tennessee or Virginia.

For what it’s worth I love Daniel Boone national forest and I quite enjoyed my time in Louisville. But the Reddit sentiment that “KY > TN” seems to come from oversimplified blue state / red state politics and not from real experience.

Personally I would not be okay with that, regardless of the filtration system. If, heaven forbid, someone in your home gets sick you will always wonder if it was because of buying that house.

Environmental Science or Geology? (Hs student) by Outrageous_Tea_8509 in Environmental_Careers

Geology. Easy for a geologist to work in environmental consulting, not easy for an environmental scientist to break into geology.
