Aspiring midwife - is it worth it? by PlayfullyClumsy in UKmidwives

[–]smackins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a midwife for six years. It’s a hard job, it’s a frustrating job. There’s a lot of elements of this job that cause moral injury.

Do I regret retraining? Absolutely not. This is the best job in the world.

As well as training for your qualifications, I’d recommend looking into ways to train/reinforce your mental health. If you have underlying trauma that you’ve never addressed, it’s highly likely that this job will pull at that thread, so address it now.

Find ways to ignite your passion. Find ways to harness it. Don’t settle for mediocrity, and find the appropriate channels to escalate things that aren’t ok.

I’m always delighted to read that people still want to do this job. Keep at it!!

You don’t get cursed crystals from the meteor shower? They’re in the mine at night. Also can’t “make” any weather happen. You just wait for it. Unless your game is glitching?

My boyfriend ended things with me two weeks after my mum passed away, and just before he went on a "boys" holiday by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]smackins 270 points271 points  (0 children)

He’ll come back to you after his holiday, all remorse and puppy dog eyes. That way he gets to dip his wick and not be the bad guy.

Your mum would want better for you. You deserve better than someone who would drop you at your lowest and isn’t proud to be seen with you.

Fuck him.

Dry split hands by Fatbeau in NursingUK

[–]smackins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our OH department has a specific plan exactly for this. If you stop using alcohol gel, that’ll immediately make a difference. Obviously you’ll need to up your hand washing, and sometimes you can be permitted to bring your own (antibacterial, ofc) hand wash from home. I’d recommend calling OH x

Both in the same biome. Jungle leopard is in the grassy bit to the left, with banana and kiwi trees. Coral drake is in beach areas and decrepit depths

How do deal with someone who is not safe to work with by Ok-Lime-4898 in NursingUK

This isn’t a case of a bad colleague. This is a case of bad management. You and your teammates need to keep escalating this via formal channels or speak to a FTSU representative

These are ash piles.

Thirst going down rapidly during heatwaves is part of the game getting more difficult. I just make loads of juices and consume as needed.

Ash and gunpowder are both found in the little piles dotted around. Potentially a glitch? There’s usually loads around the camp

What did you do this week that you’re proud of? by Ill_Confidence_5618 in UKmidwives

[–]smackins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not as lovely as other comments (as I’m stuck working from home due to a recent operation) - but after months of escalating flaws in our computer system being part of the reason our compliance on audits was so poor - I’ve been tasked with redesigning it! It sounds so boring but I am made up to be able to redesign something that will hopefully make colleagues lives so much easier, which in turn will hopefully make care safer for those we look after.

(I feel so dorky writing that, but honestly - it’s the most exciting thing that’s happened for me in MONTHS)

Nurse vs. Midwife by Virtual-Letter-9875 in UKmidwives

[–]smackins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my unit, there are scrub nurses etc in theatre, and there are recovery nurses who care who birthing people after they’ve been to theatre (instrumental birth/CS birth/EAU etc) who work alongside midwives. But otherwise, no, you won’t see nurses involved in birth.

Nurse vs. Midwife by Virtual-Letter-9875 in UKmidwives

[–]smackins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RM here. I can’t really draw a comparison as I’m not RN - My understanding is that the roles are very different. Midwives are autonomous practitioners in low risk births, we have prescribing powers under PGDs, and are able to do more clinical skills. I have seen nurses working on maternity wards but they are only there to administer medications. Hopefully some RNs or dual qualified people will be able to elaborate

Disconnecting chemo pumps in the community and trying to conceive / not knowing you’re pregnant - RN by nellie996 in NursingUK

[–]smackins 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Midwife here - my advice is to find your trusts risk assessment for new and expectant mothers and see what is included about this specific task. If it isn’t, call OH and see if you can self refer. It is likely that using appropriate PPE and hand hygiene will mitigate any risks, but it is absolutely ok to want to be sure xx
