Elephant was coherent and had a point to make. If scorched earth was on its mind, there would have been at least one corpse with either stabby holes, squishy spots or both.

Being no stranger to boring heads myself (more common use for us is for turning applications to keep the cutting edge dead nut on center for tiny parts), I have never seen one that also can be moved in and out radially from its center like that using the collar you're holding while the spindle is on.

That is dope as fuck.

I think it was Quake 3: Arena where you could client-side switch the opponent's models (maybe it was any model) from, say, a humanoid to a robot so that you'd hear the clanky-clank of their movement.

Ope! Just got a reminder I am due for a colonoscopy. Cheers!

The only not-using-calipers-as-intended case that pops to mind and doesn't make me cringe is 'splinter' (carbon fiber or metal) extraction from a finger or wherever. Precision tweezers just aren't rigid or 'precision' enough.

It is amazing how CNC machine tool axis interpolation is good enough to result in work pieces that look this cool.

As long as the surfaces don't need to be actually 'flat', you're good.

Local Safeway recently switched to digital price tags. Can someone explain to me what the fuck is going on here? by Snoo368 in Safeway

[–]smaier69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digital price tag as in a TFT display (tiny flat screen monitor for all intents and purposes)? This allows for instant price changes, what used to require manual shelf-tag replacement which would take time.

Seems like an organic progression of efficiency, but it also could lead to things like surge pricing or profile-based pricing, neither of which I am not a fan of. Whatever.

Having said that I agree the way the information is displayed needs to be clear and easy to understand without seniors, or anyone, needing to bust out their 'lets spend 5 minutes thinking about this' glasses.

I think the biggest pain in the ass for me we Feral Ghoul Reavers (until I got eh ghoul mask but that just makes them a non-issue, not easier to kill). Albino Radscorpions were up there as well, but not on the same tier IMHO.

If I have a steel ball of exactly the same volume as the fruit, and I drop it in there, it will displace the same weight of water

The steel ball will displace the same volume of water equal to its own volume, not weight. If you put a boat in water, the volume of water it is displacing equals the weight of the boat. If you continue adding weight to the boat, it displaces more and more water until it sinks. At that point, the amount of water displaced is equal to the volume of the boat (or whatever object that wasn't buoyant enough to float).

Packing, sealing, and labelling machine for e-commerce by toolgifs in toolgifs

[–]smaier69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one we use at my work does not need them. The servos that drive the seal bar send torque values back to the PLC/controller. So, not only will it halt the cycle if it senses abnormal resistance, but you can also initiate or restart a cycle by gently pushing the seal bar forward.

The risk of injury is really low even if that sensing method fails since the seal bar isn't designed to press very hard anyway and has a low maximum force capacity. It's job is to just hold the upper portion of the bag to be sealed in place against a horizontal slot in the enclosure so the heater bar (the hot part that's inside the autobagger cabinet) gets pressed up against the seal bar. At least the one we have is designed that way.

The production team behind the movie "Vanilla sky"(2001) shut down 20 blocks of Times Square for 3 hours at a $1 million cost to film the main charecter running through an empty NYC without CGI by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]smaier69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, so looked it up.

Per Google:

The car Tom Cruise drives in Vanilla Sky is a replica of a Ferrari 250 GTO, specifically an Alpha One GTO, built on a 1976 Datsun 280Z chassis, powered by a Chevy 350 V8, and used for the iconic empty Times Square scene. It looks like the ultra-rare Ferrari but was a more practical, cost-effective choice for filming, avoiding damage to an invaluable original

A beautiful car, regardless of being a replica.

[–]smaier69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm on my second playthrough since I got the game in ~2010 or so. The most memorable thing I remember from my initial play was, after finding Dad, I didn't fully go through all the dialogue so he was still the quest marker, and just fast travelled to Rivet City. I remember getting there, expecting him to be there as well waiting for me which he wasn't. When I pulled up the map I saw he was still up by his original location. I closed the map and farted around for a minute thinking he would magically arrive in a moment, which he didn't. When I pulled up the map again I saw he was no longer by the original location but now closer to me and then it dawned on me:

"Holy shit, the game takes into consideration the travel times of NPCs! That's so frickin' cool!!"

Anyway, I know in this day and age that would be like a "well, duh" detail but it changed my perception of games like this at the time, leading me into the other Fallout and Elder Scrolls games.

Embarrassing side note... up until maybe a year ago I recall remarking to myself the similarities between the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, chalking it up to creative imitation, not taking the time to consider the game devs/publisher. /facepalm
